Chapter 285 : 285 – First War, First Fly, First Experience
"Let's do this, Officer. Your skill is needed here. Please destroy the main antenna at the top of that tower. It's a crucial step to raid the main server in 3 days. If we fail here, then our comrade sacrifices will be for naught! Do this for Anne and Dilan."
Max only nodded. If three small battles already covered half of the story, then only two would probably be left. And those two were big ones.
Whoever Anne and Dilan were, he didn't care. They must be a random name that Pops threw to create a sad atmosphere.
'It's really a short story.' He thought. 'Only 5 or 6 battles, huh? I chose the correct game then.'
"If you understand, then it's good. Go after we make a commotion." Pops continued.
"I am counting on you, bud! Watch me from above!" Mohawk chirped in excitedly as he raised his rifle.
The preparation to attack only lasted for 5 seconds. Everyone was ready to storm in.
— This is the part I liked a lot.
— Will we see Breeze rampaging now?! One vs one is too boring. He's born for a battlefield like this!
— This is… WAR
— WAR IS MY BLOOD! WAR IS MY FLESH! I WAS BORN IN BATTLEFIELD!
— Born and raised. Certified warrior.
Unlike earlier, Max was now focused.
"Go go go!"
The army sprung into action at Pops' sign, leaving only 10 units behind. All of them were Max's support to reach the top of the tower. Everyone approved and acknowledged their ability to use the thruster and fly.
A mud-colored Strand approached Max as he observed the battle that had begun in the distance.
"Leader, it's time."
Max turned around and nodded. The explosions that rang loudly had kicked some dust into the air, turning the sky brown. It was a perfect camouflage for the squad. Right now, even his Strand was brown-colored. It was part of the plan.
"Let's go."
Nodding, the unit used hand gestures to command the others. They began to fly one by one, leaving Max on the ground.
Looking at the unit that had just taken off, Max breathed deeply.
[New Objective Created.]
[Destroy the AI's #3 Main Antenna.]
"Neat. It's easy to understand." Max operated his Strand to stand up and looked at the sky. "Now, the problem is… How to fly? I had never had any wings or flown anything before. Except my body, of course."
— …
— Fly your body? How the heck?
— Parachute, dude. But holy! Did you skydive?
— I like how easy it is for him to say he did a dangerous sport as if it were nothing
— To fly, just command it to fly. The game assistant will help you
— This game is pretty easy. No need to think much and just think of where you want to go. The game assist will help you fly.
"… Seriously?"
That sounded fishy.
— Yes.
— Why do you think this game isn't really liked by many skilled players?
— The skill level required to play this game is low. It's just something you play when you're bored
Now that sounded right. Max decided to try it and activated the thruster. He controlled it as if he were controlling the game assist, just like when he had used Mech-42 earlier.
A sound of flame expelled from the back could be heard. The thruster was activated, and his Strand was lifted off the ground.
The feeling of floating in the air was strange, especially since he was seated in a soft chair. It was like riding a helicopter, but it wasn't shaky at all. This cockpit had a good shock absorber.
"This is amazing!"
An exhilarating feeling filled him. This was fun. Adrenaline rushed through his virtual blood.
"Nothing can stop me! Hahaha!"
A loud laughter rang in the battlefield as the muddy brown Strand that looked slimmer than the others rose to the sky. Explosions and the sound of bullets raining down among the allied Strands and rogue robots drowned it, but that wasn't important.
"Now, let's get to the top." He said, "Full speed ahead!"
Responding to his command, the game assist system activated the thruster at full speed, sending Max flying. The Strand soared into the sky, far and beyond, without stopping. His speed was even faster than a missile due to the special thruster he got from an advanced rogue robot.
Yet, he couldn't stop.
"Aaaahh! Help!"
— I believe he can fly…
— Now I don't believe
— He's not flying. He's soaring!
— I don't want to laugh, but I am laughing. Lololol
— Kekw
— [emoji:clap clap clap] He's truly the best. I just realized this is a comedy stream and not a real gaming one.
"It's a gaming stream and not a comedy one!" Max retorted as he tried his best to stop his Strand. "How do I stop this? Game system, stop! I don't want to fly at full speed. Brake! Brake!
Brake!" He shouted loudly.
He saw the tower get closer and closer. The parabolic antenna on top of the tower could now be seen. It was facing the sky, sending a signal to a satellite to spread the main server's command to all robots in the whole world.
That was Max's target. He just had to destroy it with his railgun to finish his objective and mission. Many flying robots guarded it. However, he flew past them. No enemies could stop him, not even himself.
"Ahh, fuck it! Railgun, ready!" He readied his main weapon, and the railgun on his back crackled with electricity, ready to shoot a bullet toward the antenna.
After a second, the word ready flashed on the cockpit's screen. He immediately pulled the trigger and sent the bullet filled with electricity there. It created a sonic boom and flashed through all the robots in the area.
The bullet hit the antenna's weakest point, the joint, and destroyed it cleanly. Still, Max hadn't stopped yet. The thruster kept him flying straight toward the exploding antenna.
There was no sign of stopping.
Thus… Max accepted his fate.
"Thank you, world. Goodbye forever."
— Goodbye
— It's good knowing you
— As extreme as usual, I like it.
— The biggest firework is created by oneself, just like the wise man once said
— I am looking forward to the explosion.
Closing his eyes, Max waited for the explosion to happen. The chat began counting down as he was unable to stop his Strand. The thruster had stopped, but the force that sent him flew from the start was still carried over.
And after the chat's countdown stopped…
[Objective complete.]
The explosion never happened.
