Chapter 20 Bring me 10 trucks of coins.
The Huaxia Bank's Jiangnan City main branch was located right in the city center. Zhang Menglong had a sumptuous lunch and headed there directly afterward, as his new car still required some transfer procedures that would take a day or two, so he could only have his driver take him.
When it came to matters involving money, Zhang Menglong didn't dare to be careless and directly asked Hong Yi to accompany him, thinking that she might handle the situation more adeptly.
A Maybach pulled up at the entrance of the luxurious bank building. Since it was just past lunchtime, there weren't many people inside, and it seemed that some staff were off to take their break, leaving only a few employees at the service windows conducting business.
An elderly sanitation worker couple, supporting each other, were conducting some business at one of the counters, with a sack full of change in their hands.
"It's not easy," Zhang Menglong remarked. However, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of envy—wasn't this the very picture of growing old together, hand in hand? Suddenly reminded of a past memory, Zhang Menglong felt a sour twinge in his heart.
"Miss, isn't the bank for depositing money? All of this is our hard-earned cash. It's a bit in small change, but it's clean. Please help us deposit it," they pleaded.
"What's the matter with you? I've told you, I only handle large transactions here. Please take these savings services to the next counter," the staff member said with impatience.
The amount in the elderly couple's sack wasn't large, but there was a considerable number of coins. If she were to sort them slowly, it might take her the whole afternoon.
"But there's nobody at the next counter. You're not busy right now, so could you please help us deposit it?"
"I'm sorry, but it's time for the shift change. You'll have to wait for the next person to come and handle it," the employee said, hanging up a 'Resting' sign and reclining in a chair to start playing on her smartphone.
"Damn, what the hell is this?" Zhang Menglong flared up when he witnessed the scene.
Having just gone through the autumn recruitment season, he had applied to many banks and was very familiar with their requirements. Banking employees had to have at least a bachelor's degree, and some positions were only open to graduates of prestigious universities or even required a master's degree.
That employee appeared to be in her early twenties; she definitely hadn't been working long to have such poor professionalism. Could she have passed the banks' rounds of interviews and exams?
The two elderly individuals looked disappointed, but they had no choice and had to wait until the afternoon when the counters resumed operations to continue their savings business.
"Uncle, Auntie, please wait a moment!" Zhang Menglong approached the counter and glanced at the nameplate, "Zhou Yue, is it? Is this how you treat customers? Call your manager out—I want to make a complaint."
"Our manager doesn't have time to deal with you!" Zhou Yue retorted with an arrogant air. Zhang Menglong's suspicions were confirmed—she had not joined the bank through the rigorous examinations as most fresh graduates.
Her uncle was the manager here, and with that connection, she secured the job amidst many superior candidates with her ordinary second-tier university qualifications.
Zhang Menglong sneered, "So your counter only handles large-value savings transactions, right?"
"That's right. Do you see the sign? It says this counter only handles savings transactions above one hundred thousand. It's shift change time now; even if you want to deposit money, you will have to wait till the next person arrives," she stated.
After finishing her explanation, Zhou Yue continued to absentmindedly scroll through TikTok.
"Interesting! This is the first time I've seen bank staff so neglectful of their duties," Zhang Menglong said to the elderly couple, "Uncle, Auntie, please have a seat for a moment. I guarantee she will be begging to help you with your savings shortly."
"Humph! You've got quite the mouth on you. Do you think you're the bank president or something?" With her uncle backing her, Zhou Yue felt untouchable, even obnoxious senior staff didn't dare to provoke her—in her mind, her uncle was the boss, and she ranked number two.
"Good, I hope you can still laugh later," Zhang Menglong checked the time. It wasn't even half-past twelve, and he had more than half an hour before his appointment with the bank president. He had time to entertain Zhou Yue's antics.
"You don't accept small deposits here, do you?" Zhang Menglong said to Hong Yi at his side, "Is there any way you can get me ten truckloads of coins within half an hour? I mean the kind that's used for hauling cement!"
"Mr. Zhang, if you need it, I can immediately have all the bus and subway stations in Jiangnan City put at your disposal, half an hour is more than enough." Hong Yi seemed to have understood Zhang Menglong's intention.
"Good, you should know what I want to do."
"Rest assured, Mr. Zhang, I will make the arrangements now. Please take a seat over here." Hong Yi took out her phone and dialed a number to start giving instructions.
"Posing." Seeing Zhang Menglong settle into the waiting area, she immediately displayed a look of disdain, thinking this young man might actually have some real skills, when in reality he appeared to be nothing more than a pushover.
Zhang Menglong paid no attention to her, knowing that before long, a brand-new Mask of Pain would appear on her face.
"Rumble!" In less than half an hour, a roaring sound came from the street outside the bank.
Ten large trucks were neatly lined up in a row, orderly parked at the entrance of the bank. The parking space at the bank's entrance was already limited, and with ten large trucks stationed there, almost no space was left except for a narrow path leading to the service hall.
"How odd, the trucks aren't heading to a construction site; why are they at the bank entrance?" Many passersby curiously glanced over.
It wasn't a big deal not to look, but one would be in for a shock once they did. The trucks weren't loaded with bricks or cement, but were piled high with coins!
"Damn, what's going on? I've seen trucks carrying bricks, cement, timber, but this is the first time I've seen one carrying so much money!"
"Oh my, ten trucks filled with coins, could this be the legendary 'showing off wealth'?"
"It looks like there are not only one yuan coins, but also ten cents, fifty cents, could this be the public transit company transporting money?"
"Possible! But using trucks to carry it is a bit too much, right? Quick, snap a picture, you don't see this kind of scene often!"
"What's the actual situation? Ten big coaches, if they're all one yuan coins, that has to be over a million, right?"
"Look, someone's coming out!"
From the ten large trucks, more than twenty people jumped down and walked straight into the bank. The onlookers, full of curiosity, followed to see what they were really up to.
This group marching into the bank with such a commanding presence gave the bank's security guards quite a fright; they hesitated between letting them through or stopping them.
"Miss Hong, did we bring the money you asked for?" A middle-aged man approached Hong Yi and respectfully asked, "How should we handle this money?"
"Put it into sacks, then carry it inside. Mr. Zhang wants to make a deposit at the bank." Hong Yi instructed.
"Yes!" Dozens of middle-aged men immediately went back to the trucks. You could tell they were well-prepared as the clinking coins were efficiently bagged. Their efficiency and execution could rival that of well-trained soldiers.
Zhang Menglong walked back to the counter and knocked on the glass in front of Zhou Yue, "Hello, I have a few million in coins here, could you please help me with the savings service?"
