Chapter 33 Everything is a monster
Chapter 33 Everything is a monster
The monster dashed at Xander, this time, with twice the amount of speed as before, it's target being the small low leveled creature in front of it.
Xander looked forward, the fly monster was already too close to him, there was no way to dodge it, it was too big.
Just as Xander gave up the shadows around the bug moved and a transparent dark pillar rose out of the floor in front of Xander, blocking the attack.
The creature let out a loud, ear piercing shriek that echoed in the tunnels as it collided with the pillar. It didn't even have time to recalibrate as a giant flat, sword looking shadow erected from below the fly and pierced through it from below, killing it.
Xander was surprised. He stared at the creature as it's big body fell to the ground with a thud, lifeless, dead.
Xander's eye shifted from the giant dead fly to the person standing beside it, Harry, who had a sad and solemn look on his face.
Harry silently walked over to Xander and sat beside Xander who was still kneeling, and had his eyes glued on Harry.
After a whole minute of silence the fear that was lingering in Xander's heart finally settled and he could speak again.
"What was that?"
Harry sighed as he heard Xander's words.
"It was my ultimate skill, 'Rising shadow blades'. It let's me create swords of any shape and size from the shadows in my surroundings." Harry sighed.
Xander kept quiet. It wasn't that he didn't hear what Harry said, it was just that he was dazed. He almost lost his life there.
Xander sighed and turned to see Harry with a sad expression. He walked up to his friend and put a hand on his shoulder.
"What happened?"
Harry sighed. "That was my strongest skill. I was saving it for the minotaur. It takes one week to cool down."
Xander's brows furrowed as he heard what Harry said, he looked at the bug they just killed and asked, "Can the skill kill the minotaur?"
Harry scoffed. "The minotaur is a level 50 boss. I wanted to upgrade the skill at least to level 30 but after I used it now, it takes a whole week before I can use it again."
'The minotaur... level 50?!' Xander's eyes widened.
*Ding!*
[Second challenge passed. You have recieved +5 levels and exp will be shared between you and other contributors]
Xander read the information on the screen and looked at Harry who still had a sad expression on his face.
'I have to tell him about this challenge.' Xander balled his hands into fists as he hesitated about telling Harry that it was his fault that they can't use life stones.
"Come. Harry. I have something I want to tell you."
Xander and Harry walked deeper into the cave, Xander of course didn't forget to be careful before he accidentally trigger another challenge.
He told Harry about the challenge. Xander was surprised that Harry accepted it quickly and reverted back to his playful self.
"Hey don't keep secrets like that from your bro. We're in this together." Harry said as he punched Xander's shoulder.
At that moment, a grumbling sound resounded around the quiet cave. Xander and Harry looked at themselves slowly.
"We have been focused on surviving that we completely forgot about eating." Harry said. The sound was obviously coming from his empty stomach.
As if thinking what Harry was thinking Xander and Harry turned back towards the giant fly that had it's head split open.
"Xander, we can't try it out, we don't know if it's..."
*Ding!*
[Creatures meat are not poisonous. Eat their meat to gain random stat points.]
Harry and Xander looked at each other once more with a smile and got to work. They disected the creature first as the shell was very strong.
They made a fire and arranged bones to camp for a while before stabbing the meat with sharp bones and hover them above the fire.
They didn't have spices so they just roasted the meat like that and after that, they ate voraciously.
[Meat of level 20 fly eaten. Stamina +10]
[Meat of level 20 fly eaten. Strength +1]
[Meat of... eaten. Stamina +9]
[Meat of...]
Xander kept on eating happily while listening to the sweet sounds of the system giving them more power.
Xander and Harry finished more than two pounds of meat in less than an hour and were both exhausted.
But they couldn't go to sleep though, fearing that something might swoop in from nowhere to claim their lives.
"Come on. We can't rest, let's keep moving." Xander said as he looked at Harry who was lazily sitting on the floor.
Harry sighed as he looked at the top of the cave.
"All this is just crazy. I can't believe we were just normal high school boys about to graduate, and now we have to fight monsters to survive."
Xander too understood this logic. It even looks like this whole game affected Harry more than it did to him.
"But there's hope to leave this damn place." Harry stood up and followed Xander deep inside the caves and soon they heard a sound, the sound of a flowing river.
At the end of the tunnel there was a blue light that reflected into the tunnel and both Xander and Harry approached with caution, gripping the handles of their weapons in case of emergencies.
Since they came to the tunnel it has been nothing but surprises so it has become a reflex for them now to trust their weapons.
"What the...?"
Xander and Harry stood dazed as they looked at where the blue light came from.
There was a slide in front of them, leading downwards into a sandy land with a flowing river. Hell, there was even a waterfall on the other side coming out from a tunnel like the one they just came from.
The ceiling of the wide cave had large hole in it through which light came in and illuminated the place.
The cave was beautifully lit but Xander still felt that something was amiss.
After surveying the surroundings they didn't find any monster inside the small beach and both of them slid down.
The atmosphere was soothing and calming and it was like a load was lifted off of their shoulders. Xander couldn't help his nature as he patrolled the area twice before looking towards the tunnel the water was coming from.
"I think we should follow that tunnel, it could lead us to a way out." Xander stood up.
"You're right. The water has to come from somewhere."
Xander looked at Harry who had an exhausted look on his face. Dark circles could be seen around his eyes with eyebags, evidence of his exhaustion.
Xander too was not well off and his situation was similar to Harry's.
"Why don't we take a break?"
"That sounds good." Harry slumped on the floor with a thud and closed his eyes.
Xander too sat on the cool sand, his feet ached from walking for hours in the tunnels, trying not to trigger anything before he gets out of this tunnel. All of his muscled twitched multiple times as he relaxed for the first time in this caves.
The sand was cold and Xander's legs felt comfortable in the cool sand. He rested his back on the sand to relax a little.
*Clank*
"Hm?" Xander sat up quickly as he heard the sound of metal clashing, only to see Harry taking off his armour.
"What are you doing?"
"Oh. I want to soak in the water a little." Harry answered as he began walking towards the water.
"Wait." Xander said as he stood up and grabbed a handful of sand.
Harry watched Xander throw the sand into the water and after waiting for some time, nothing happened.
"Well. It looks like the water is safe." Harry said as he observed the water.
"Don't you think it's strange that creature's aren't here." Xander said as he brought out a piece of meat that they remained by mistake and threw it into the water.
"Look. Not you're wasting our food. I just want to soak..." Harry kept quiet as he watched the meat dissolve in the water and gradually disappeared.
"Seems like the water was a monster also." Xander said as he went back to lie down on the cool sand.
Seems like everything is a monster in this place.
