She stared in shock at the fish in the pond when her phone finally rang.
“What’s up?”
Liam’s voice came from the other end of the line.
Celeste snapped back to reality. “Why is Bubble in our yard?”
Liam was silent momentarily, then slowly said, “Didn’t you say the pond in our yard was too empty? I just randomly scooped up one from grandma’s.”
Celeste said, “You thought the pond was empty, so you brought Bubble here?”
She was baffled. Of all the colorful carp in the pond, Bubble was the most conspicuous. How could he have randomly scooped it up? Liam chuckled softly
“Don’t laugh!” Celeste glared. “Grandma couldn’t find Bubble and even called me ”
She paused, realizing something. “So Grandma called me because she knew you stole it, and she probably thought I was in on it, testing me by calling!”
“I was going to call you first before contacting her, but the fish is with you! How am I supposed to explain to her? Say her darling grandson stole her pet?”
Liam fell silent.
He thought he was clever but not clever enough.
Grandma didn’t call to check if Bubble was here, she was checking if Celeste was with him.
It wasn’t a secret when he sent Owen to retrieve the fish. It’s strange that Grandma seemed not to know that Bubble was with him. It’s clear that Owen must have let something slip, and now Grandma was trying to confirm it.
Celeste was so focused on not publicizing their relationship that she didn’t realize how obvious she was.
Grandma mentioned Bubble was missing but didn’t take the initiative to contact him.
Celeste was still clueless about revealing their relationship. She was staring at the large carp in the pond, her head aching. “You better get someone to return Bubble. Grandma’s frantic without it.”
Liam replied, “Give it a couple of days. It’s just getting used to this environment. We can’t move it too often.”
“What am I supposed to tell Grandma?”
Liam suggested, “Tell her Bubble drank a witch’s potion and grew legs to run away.”
Celeste’s eyelid twitched and said, “And then fell in love with a prince, was abandoned, and turned into sea foam, right?”
Liam, serious, “He’s a male, so he’s more likely to get caught in the rain and turn back into a fish and get picked up for fish soup.” He paused, then suddenly asked, “What does such a fat fish taste like?”
Celeste was speechless, “Liam, can you be serious for once?”
Liam chuckled again, “I’ve got some things to do. I’ll call you later.”
After hanging up, Celeste called Sienna back.
Sienna was relieved to know Bubble was with Liam. She then asked, ‘Celeste, how is Bubble adjusting? He’s always lived in the old house, and I’m unsure if he’s used to the new place. Can you send me some photos?”
Celeste was about to agree when she realized that this might imply that she was at Liam’s. So she changed her mind, “Let Liam send you pictures, I’m at home, I can’t see Bubble”
Sienna replied, “I’ve deleted him from my contacts. He can’t send me photos.”
Celeste was puzzled.
