Chapter 723

The night of Caitlyn’s funeral, Celeste had pretty much cried herself out.

She thought that from then on, except when the job demanded it, she’d never shed a tear in private again.

But Liam’s apologies, one after another, had her sobbing helplessly.

Every day, her mind was haunted by what had happened that night. She was scared that the person lying next to her in the dark wouldn’t be her husband, so she always kept a light on in the bedroom.

She was afraid of being touched by Liam in the dark and of his roughness in bed. Every little movement reminded her of that vomit–inducing wedding night.

She couldn’t stop blaming Liam for leaving her on their wedding night; she couldn’t stop dwelling on it.

Liam’s repeated attempts to comfort her by rubbing her back felt like a knife cutting into her heart, slice by slice.

The material things he gave Celeste were the cheapest. He hadn’t given her the care, trust, and protection she really needed.

No wonder she rated him in the negative. The harm he and the Reed family had done to her was so deep; how could he expect to get her forgiveness so easily?

He wanted to ask Celeste why she hadn’t told her grandmother at the time. He figured the old lady would’ve been reasonable.

But he quickly understood.

Celeste was a lone outsider marrying into the Reed family. Everyone around her was a Reed, and she was the only one with a different surname. How could she be sure that the old lady would stand by her side?

In the wolf–pack–like environment of the Reed family, she was completely alone.

The year they got married, the Campbell family’s company was in crisis, and her mother was facing the dilemma of being cut off from her medication by Shawn. Under those circumstances, how could she dare make a big deal out of this? If he abandoned her because of the family’s reputation or looked down on her because of it, how would she cope?

Liam kept reflecting on the past, his heart aching.

He let go of Celeste, leaned his forehead against hers, gently wiped away her tears, and said hoarsely, “I’m definitely not going to let this slide.”

Celeste pushed him away, collected herself, and, after a long while, said, “That’s your business. What you want to do or don’t want to do is your choice. Don’t impose it on me. If you go after Kaylee and your mother because of me, will you blame me when you regret it later, saying I turned you into a murderer?”

“For my revenge, I’ll take it myself. Your choice to protect them or to put righteousness above family is just your normal moral view, not any kind of bias.” Liam said softly, “I understand.”

Letti was still soft–hearted, not completely blocking the road between them. She wanted him to judge those people from a moral and legal perspective, not out of guilt toward her.

Celeste originally wanted to keep this a secret to give Liam a blow later and show him what kind of person Kaylee really was, but today she got carried

away.

This thing had been weighing on her for a long time. She used it to provoke Liam, but at the same time, she was hurting herself too.

Liam gently tucked the hair on her face behind her ears and said softly, “I’ll take you home first.”

Celeste replied, “I need to call Mr. Fletcher.”

Liam frowned, looking a bit unhappy. “He probably doesn’t have time to deal with you right now.”
