Chapter 216

Zoe heaved a sigh of relief… only to get nervous again soon enough. “Wait, what is Grandpa going to do John? John clearly wasn’t going to agree to the engagement.”

“I called you specifically to warn you about that,” Nancy snapped. “Don’t try to meddle with John’s engagement with Jessica! I know you’re buddies with Cordy, and I won’t stop you from making friends, but you have no right to interfere with certain matters-not that you can!”

“Mom…” Zoe groaned.

“And your grandpa is telling you to go home tonight for dinner,” Nancy added, giving Zoe no chance of refusal.

“But why?” Zoe asked.

After all, Alan had grown to dislike hustle and bustle over the last few years. In fact, there were rarely any family dinners, and he only attended a couple of social events unless absolutely

necessary.

It was certainly no Christmas or Thanksgiving now, so why was she suddenly summoned home?! “Jessica’s grandfather is coming for dinner and discussing John’s engagement with her.”

“And what does that have to do with me?” Zoe asked.

“Just shut up and come home for dinner!” Nancy snapped angrily.

“Fine,” Zoe gave in immediately, not daring to refuse at all-no one would help her stay in showbiz if she offended her mommy dearest!

Still, Zoe soon remembered something and quickly asked, “Wait, would John be at the dinner too?”

“What do you think?”

Zoe could imagine her mother rolling her eyes at her even from the other end.

“I mean, I haven’t been able to reach John since last night. Grandpa is keeping him under house arrest, isn’t he? And if Grandpa is worried about me causing trouble…”

“Don’t worry. He never does anything he isn’t sure about,” Nancy said assuredly.

Zoe certainly had more to say but Nancy cut her off. “Be home on time or I’ll break your legs. We shall see what roles you’ll get after that!”

Zoe said nothing and hung up before quickly texting Cordy.

[I won’t be coming home for dinner tonight. Don’t wait for me.]

[Okay.]

The reply from Cordy was instantaneous. It suited her as well, since she would be working overtime.

Zoe then sent: [I’ll be having dinner at Levine Manor, and I should be able to meet John. Grandpa must have him confined, which is why I can’t reach him. I can relay anything he says once I see

him.]

Cordy did not reply this time, and Zoe pursed her lips.

Whatever happened, she must find out what John really thought tonight.

After removing her makeup, Zoe quickly left the dressing room since she could not wait to see John.

But when she opened the door, she found herself staring at Mandy’s face.

They held each other’s gaze for a moment, and Zoe was about to leave when Mandy started bragging, “Jay and I are really in love. He protected me even though I’m riddled with scandals.”

“So what are you trying to say?” Zoe asked, wheeling on Mandy and scoffing. “That you’re both vipers sharing a nest? That you’re both terrible people and deserve each other?”

“Quit being sour grapes, and there’s no need to pretend. You like Jay, don’t you?” Mandy said confidently. “You stole my role because you slept with him, no?”

Zoe shrugged. “Why’d you presume that everyone is as blind as you are, or that they all sleep around for roles?”

“Shut up!” Mandy snapped angrily. “I’m warning you-stay away from Jay! I can remove b*tches like you who have no connections or influence in showbiz! And know this: I’ll be visiting his parents at his home, and we’ll be married soon enough!”
