Chapter 904

In the end, Cordy had enough of reading the news and lowered her phone, only to find him standing by the door.

John came to his senses at that very moment, his expression turning cold immediately.

Cordy frowned, sensing that John was deliberately keeping her distance. However, she ignored that completely.

She actually smiled at him. “You’re back.”

“What’s the matter?” John asked coolly.

“Do I need a reason to come to you?”

John stared at her in return, but he was unable to tell her “We shouldn’t be seeing each other,” and decided against chasing her off even though he couldn’t be at her side.

“Shouldn’t I thank you for saving me?” Cordy asked.

“You don’t have to,” John replied. “It’s nothing much, and anyone would do the same given the situation.”

“But Nana just stood by and watched,” Cordy immediately deflected his argument.

John stayed silent and didn’t argue-perhaps he was unwilling to do so, since he would rather Cordy stay with him.

“You’re not going to ask how I’m going to thank you?” Cordy asked him, so that the atmosphere between them didn’t cool off.

John played along. “How?”

“Come here, and I’ll tell you.” Cordy flashed him a mysterious look.

John was a little wary, but he walked up to her regardless.

“Drop to a couch. You’re so tall, I’d have to crane my neck so much I’d become a giraffe to look at your face,” Cordy complained.

John was speechless—being tall wasn’t his fault.

Nonetheless, he complied and dropped to a crouch, while still keeping a distance from Cordy.

“Is this fine—”

John had his hand over his lips before he finished, and Cordy’s lips ended up pressing up against his palm.

She thought the sneak attack would work, and the disappointment in his eyes was very visible.

Her heart hurt from being rejected so frankly, even if she was mentally prepared for it.

The air between them got awkward for quite a while until John stood up, taking a step back and maintaining a polite distance as he said, “You don’t have to hurt yourself like this.”

Cordy shouldn’t give up on her own principles, especially when she hated people who ruined relationships and marriages for others.

Her own mother and herself had been a victim to such people, yet she was doing the same for his sake.

It hurt his heart to see this.

“No, it doesn’t hurt me,” Cordy said bluntly. “I used to think that there are plenty of fish in the sea, that I didn’t have to get obsessed over one because I held no expectations for relationships. In fact, that was why I could break up with Kyle so easily.”

“But John…no, Lucas,” she used his current name in fear that he would be repulsed. ”1 can admit I’m obsessed with you. I know that you love me too, and you just feel responsible for Nana, which is why you’re with her. But since we love each other, why can’t we just be brave and go for it?!’ John clenched his knuckles behind his back.
