The young man fell silent too when he heard this.
After a few seconds, he tentatively asked, “Are you suggesting that despite ascending to the heavens, our Little Junior Sister is still so concerned about me that she used her psychic powers or telepathy to give my number to someone else?”
There was a pause on the other end of the line.
The conversation dipped into silence again, but this time, the person on the other end was at a loss for words.
Eventually, they replied with a wry smile, “Little Six, you really are something. Why don’t you dream a little more?”
“Wasn’t it your idea?” the young man, ruffling his hair in frustration, retorted. “It wasn’t me who brought up Little Junior Sister. What do you mean by ‘if it’s not a ghost’ then?”
There was a brief silence before the voice spoke slowly, “What I meant was, eliminating all the impossibilities, maybe someone just dialed the wrong number.”
“That’s impossible!” the young Duke asserted. “The caller directly asked if I was the Duke of Muston. How could that be a mistake?”
“Hmm,” the other person pondered. “Rather than our deceased Little Junior Sister using her telepathy to share your number, I think it’s more likely that your desire to settle down moved the heavens, leading the marriage agency to you.”
“Second Senior Brother! Without Big Senior Brother and Little Junior Sister around, you think no one can handle you, huh?” the young Duke bit back angrily. “And how dare you bring up Little Junior Sister? It’s been three years. Have you found the source of that explosion yet?”
“No! And instead, you waste time setting me up.”
“We’ll find out, ” the voice grew colder. “As I said, this matter won’t rest until death. ”
“Beep… beep… beep…”
The call was disconnected.
The young man stared at his phone in silence.
He glanced at the unfamiliar number that had called him earlier, pondered for a couple of seconds, and dialed it back.
After a few rings, the call was cut off.
Undeterred, he called again, but this time, the phone was turned off. The young Duke muttered to himself, “Fine. Stubborn.”
“Check this number,” he said to his butler, handing over the phone. “Find out which area it’s from, down to the street.”
The butler glanced at the number. “Your Grace, it’s from the Great Xia Empire. I’ll ask T18 for the exact location.”
With a wave of his hand, the young Duke dismissed the butler, who left to carry out the order.
“The Great Xia…” he murmured, picking up his fork and knife. “I’ve never been there. Might be worth a visit after this is sorted out.”
He was curious to see who dared to toy with him.
Meanwhile, in MO City.
After dining, Si Fuqing and Jiang Changning headed to their pre-booked hotel.
They opted for a standard room, as Si Fuqing was never particular about her living conditions.
To her, any bed was fine, a luxury compared to the days she spent sleeping on the streets while on missions with her Third Senior Sister.
No sooner had Si Fuqing received her room key, she got a call from Ling Feng.
However, it was her assistant lawyer on the line.
“Ms… Ms. Si…” the young man stuttered, more out of panic than anything else, “that Duke of Muston called me several times. I got so scared, I… I… I turned off my phone! ”
If he had known it was really the Duke of Muston, he would never have dared to make the call.
He was convinced he’d just landed on the Muston Dukedom’s blacklist.
“I understand,” Si Fuqing responded calmly, unphased. “Just focus on your work.”
“Yes, yes, of course!” the young lawyer hastily agreed, apologizing profusely. “I won’t make such a foolish mistake again. I’ll follow your lead, Ms. Si!”
Even now, he was baffled about how Si Fuqing had come into contact with the Duke of Muston.
But he dared not disclose this to anyone, as per Ling Feng’s warning.
Jiang Changning turned to her, “What happened?”
“Nothing much, ” Si Fuqing replied nonchalantly, tossing her phone aside. “In a few days, I’ll go trick some money out of someone.”
She had studied the pharmaceutical technology of the Pei family business and found it quite advanced, even by Great Xia Empire’s standards. It could be worth getting her Sixth Senior Brother to invest.
“Who are you tricking?” Jiang, keeping up with Si Fuqing’s quick changes of subject, inquired. “Your boss?”
“No,” Si Fuqing replied with a lazy smile. “Just a poor, single guy.”
Jiang Changning shook her head, still trying to grasp the array of characters surrounding Si Fuqing.
Reaching the 16th floor, they stepped out of the elevator and approached room 1618.
Just as Si Fuqing swiped her card, there was a click from the neighboring door as it opened..
