Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Gu Wan did not understand why he was looking at her like that.
Fortunately, it was just a brief moment, and Lu Yu quickly retracted his gaze.
"Since that's the case, I'll get going first." Although the conditions of the ward were not bad, it still could not compare to the comforts of home. Moreover, the nurses would come in every now and then during the night to do their rounds. Lu Yu was a light sleeper, so it would be difficult for him to get decent rest here. He had only stayed because she was in a car accident today.
Now that Gu Wan had taken the initiative to speak up, it seemed he no longer had a reason to stay.
As soon as he finished speaking, Lu Yu turned and left without any hesitation.
When he reached the door, Gu Wan felt as though he had paused for a bit, as if waiting for something. Seeing she did not react, he then left completely.
The door clicked shut softly.
Gu Wan did not think much of it. Feeling her heart still beating steadily, she could not help but wonder - had she really loved him before? If so, why was her heart so calm now?
A while later, one of the caregivers, seeing that the boss had left, came over to help Gu Wan to the bathroom to wash up before resting.
Gu Wan complied with the other party's movements, no longer dwelling on her thoughts.
On the other hand...
When Lu Yu reached the hospital entrance, there was already a car waiting.
Upon getting into the car, Lu Yu inexplicably recalled some past events.
Compared to Xia Qianqian’s impression of Gu Wan’s aloofness, Lu Yu had felt all along that Gu Wan was very clingy, the same whether in public or private, as if there were two of her. It was only during their first meeting that she had been so cold. To see her being so cold again now, Lu Yu found it a little hard to get used to.
Over the past two years there had been times when Gu Wan got herself bruised or hurt, though not often. Lu Yu remembered that her worst injury was when she had sprained her ankle. According to the housekeeper, it had been quite serious and she had been bedridden for at least half a month. She would always message him about it then, wanting him to come home to accompany her, but Lu Yu had been busy with work and naturally did not agree to it. By the time he returned home, her injury had mostly healed, so he did not think much of it. If not for this car accident now, he might not even have recalled that incident.
Having had that prior experience, Lu Yu had made an effort to stay and accompany her this time, but unexpectedly, she had rejected him. Lu Yu could not help frowning.
Soon however he consoled himself that when her memories returned, Gu Wan would surely regret this. The thought lightened his mood considerably.
In Lu Yu’s opinion, it was just a minor car accident resulting in some head trauma. The hospital president had said full recovery would happen in three months at most.
Though he thought this, Lu Yu found his mind wandering uncontrollably.
Lu Yu had intended to get some work done after returning home before resting. But every time his concentration lapsed, his thoughts would drift to who knows where. After several fruitless attempts, he reluctantly accepted reality and closed his laptop.
Lying in bed, smelling the familiar feminine scent lingering beside him, Lu Yu tossed and turned for a long time before he finally fell into an exhausted sleep.
The next morning, the melodious chirping of birds awoke Lu Yu at his usual time. The lawn outside was verdant and lush.
Lu Yu opened his eyes as he did daily, expecting the familiar body to snuggle up to him, but the space around him remained cold and empty for quite a while. He sat up in bed and rubbed the space between his brows, suddenly remembering that Gu Wan was still hospitalized.
After Lu Yu washed up and changed, the Lu Boss that everyone was accustomed to seeing emerged and stepped out.
As for what Gu Wan was doing right now...
Ignoring Xia Qianqian’s chat box on her phone, which still clearly showed the other party saying she would come over this morning to bring breakfast, Gu Wan understood Xia Qianqian’s character well. It was absolutely impossible for her to get up this early.
After eating the breakfast specially ordered for her by the caregiver, Gu Wan noticed her injuries were not critical and the nauseous feeling from yesterday had alleviated substantially. Furthermore, the two caregivers had been on their feet since early morning, changing her clothes, washing her laundry, helping her wash up. Gu Wan was not a harsh person, so she told them to go rest.
The two caregivers exchanged a look before deciding one would rest while the other continued accompanying Gu Wan, because the housekeeper who had hired them emphasized that their beautiful mistress feared loneliness the most. Taking in Gu Wan’s exquisite features and seemingly fragile constitution even without any makeup, the caregivers wholeheartedly agreed with the housekeeper.
Seeing this, Gu Wan chuckled to herself. She was not a child, how could she possibly fear being alone?
Perhaps she had in the past, but now that she had grown up, she no longer feared it.
Gu Wan wondered curiously what her interactions with Lu Yu had been like to give the caregivers such a deep misunderstanding. But this was a question she figured she would not be able to unravel.
Seeing the caregivers had good intentions, Gu Wan did not say anything more. She simply turned on the video projector and selected a currently popular show to watch.
Outside, the blazing sun shone intensely. Thankfully the air conditioner was on, otherwise the heat might have suffocated them.
They said visiting in the afternoon was inauspicious, though Xia Qianqian paid no heed to such things and Gu Wan likely would not either. Still, Xia Qianqian made it to the hospital ten minutes before noon in a flurry.
Gu Wan waited until Xia Qianqian had caught her breath before pointing to the lunch that had just been prepared. "You haven't had breakfast yet right, let's eat together."
Seeing her prediction proven right yet again, Xia Qianqian was left speechless.
After a while, Xia Qianqian reluctantly took a seat at the dining table with Gu Wan to share lunch.
Once Xia Qianqian had eaten her fill and collapsed onto the sofa, unmoving, she caught up on the drama with Gu Wan for a bit before reacting belatedly and asking, "When did what's-his-name leave?"
She refused to even utter his name.
Xia Qianqian found it preposterous that her best friend had gotten into a car accident, something so major, yet he could not even spare one day’s time for her. Learning that Lu Yu had left last night without even staying to accompany Gu Wan overnight, Xia Qianqian became even more infuriated.
Just as Xia Qianqian was gritting her teeth, she heard Gu Wan beside her speak up nonchalantly, "What's there to make a fuss about?"
Although they had only interacted briefly yesterday, Gu Wan felt this newly acquired husband of hers seemed perfectly fine.
"While he's not physically here, he contacted the doctors and arranged the ward right away yesterday after learning about the accident. Later, when the hospital said there were no issues, he still came personally to check things out. Judging from his expression, it looked like he had rushed right over after finishing up a busy schedule. It’s already very good of him." At least her judgement of character did not seem problematic.
As Gu Wan spoke more and more approvingly, Xia Qianqian's eyes widened in disbelief.
When Gu Wan stopped talking, she saw Xia staring at her as if seeing a monster, with a very strange expression, like she had said something incomprehensible.
"You didn't use to be like this..." Xia Qianqian cut herself off abruptly mid-sentence.
Only then did she remember that the Gu Wan who never placed any expectations on others seemed to have returned.
Because she expected nothing, she was not demanding.
Xia Qianqian felt she should be happy about this, yet strangely, she could not feel glad at all.
