Three days later, Lillian rushed home, wary of igniting Alex’s wrath. His threats, always executed, left
no room for delay. Her unexpected return delighted the matriarch, who eagerly updated her on recent
events, including Emma’s audacity in reclaiming her gifts.
Lillian’s frustration boiled over. “Where’s Emma? I have to confront her! She’s the reason Alex called
me back!”

As they fumed, Alex’s voice interrupted, icy and commanding. “Emma had nothing to do with your
return, Lillian.” His unexpected presence startled both women.
