Chapter 194: The Senate Hearing Part 1
Chapter 194: The Senate Hearing Part 1
January 25th, 2027.
"The first senate hearing would be with the Senate Committee on Health and Demography," Juliet reported with her tablet in hand, scrolling through the schedule.
Michael was pacing in his office, trying to wrap his head around the upcoming hearing. "What's the focus of this committee again? I need to be prepared for their questions."
"Mostly healthcare regulations, public health policies, and demographic trends," Juliet replied, looking up from her tablet. "They'll probably ask about your recent innovations in medicine and how they impact public health. You know, the usual scrutiny about safety and ethics."
Michael nodded, taking a deep breath. "Okay, that's manageable. Anything else I need to know?"
"They might also touch on your company's business practices," Juliet continued. "There have been some concerns about monopolistic behavior with your patents and how much control you have over certain markets."
"Wonderful," Michael muttered, rubbing his forehead. "I guess I need to be ready for some tough questions. Any advice on how to handle them?"
Juliet smiled, trying to lighten the mood. "Just be honest and straightforward. You've got nothing to hide, and your track record speaks for itself. If you stay calm and composed, they won't find anything to pick apart."
Michael sighed, feeling the weight of the upcoming hearing. "Let's hope you're right. I don't want this to turn into a circus."
"It won't," Juliet reassured him. "We've got a solid plan. Just stick to the facts, and you'll be fine."
As they were having a conversation, Bridget entered the office.
"You guys are ready? The Senate hearing will start at 10 a.m."
"I'm ready. Juliet, is Carter and the convoy ready?" Michael asked.
"They're waiting outside," Juliet replied. "We're good to go when you are."
Michael nodded, grabbing his briefcase. "Let's get this over with. The sooner we face this hearing, the sooner we can get back to work."
Outside, the convoy was waiting, with Carter at the head of the group. A row of sleek black SUVs stood ready to escort him to the Senate hearing.
"Good morning, Mr. Reyes," Carter greeted, extending a hand. "Are you ready for today?"
"Good morning, Carter. As ready as I'll ever be," Michael replied, shaking his hand. "Let's get this over with."
Carter nodded, opening the door to the Alphard. "We've got a clear route planned to avoid traffic, and we've coordinated with Senate security to ensure a smooth entrance."
"Great," Michael said, stepping into the Alphard. "Just keep it low-key. I don't want too much attention on the way there."
"Understood," Carter replied, closing the door behind him.
Inside the van, Michael glanced out the window, watching the BGC skyline as they pulled away from the PSE Tower. Where would the senate hearing be held if you are curious? Well in the Philippines they are held at GSIS in Pasay City, near the Mall of Asia.
It's one of the busiest areas in Metro Manila, and traffic is almost always a headache, but Carter and his team had planned the route carefully to avoid delays.
Juliet sat next to him, reviewing the hearing's agenda on her tablet. "So, the committee chair, Senator Alonzo, is known for being thorough," she said. "He might ask you about the patent system and its impact on competition. You might also get questions about clinical trials and safety protocols."
Michael nodded, listening closely. "Got it. Anything else?"
"Just remember to stay calm and collected," Juliet replied. "They'll be watching your every move, so keep your composure. If you feel like you're getting grilled, just stick to the facts and stay professional."
"Right," Michael said, feeling a bit anxious despite Juliet's reassurances. "Thanks for the heads-up."
The convoy weaved through the streets, eventually arriving at the Senate Building. Carter and his team coordinated with security to ensure a smooth entry. As they pulled into the designated area, reporters and journalists were already waiting, cameras and microphones ready.
He wasn't in the mood for press interactions, especially not before a Senate hearing.
"Just ignore them," Juliet advised. "Head straight for the entrance, and we'll handle the rest."
Michael nodded, stepping out of the Alphard. As he walked toward the Senate Building, a flurry of reporters surged forward, shouting questions. Cameras flashed, microphones were thrust in his direction, but he kept his gaze straight ahead, not stopping to engage.
"Mr. Reyes! Can you give us a comment on today's hearing?" one reporter called out.
"Mr. Reyes! What do you think the outcome will be?" another asked.
Michael continued walking, letting Carter and the security team form a protective barrier around him. Bridget and Juliet followed closely, ensuring he wasn't distracted by the chaos.
As they reached the entrance, a Senate security officer guided them through a side door to avoid the crowd. Inside, the atmosphere was calmer, with Senate staff directing them to the committee hearing room.
In the committee room, Michael took a moment to survey the setup. It was a large space with rows of seats arranged in a semicircle facing a central podium where he'd be speaking. At the back, a group of aides and staffers were busy preparing documents and setting up equipment for the hearing.
Juliet pointed toward a small table with a nameplate that read "Michael Reyes." "That's where you'll be sitting," she said, leading the way. "You'll have a microphone and everything you need right there."
Michael followed her, his briefcase in hand. He set it down on the table and opened it, pulling out his notes for the hearing. He didn't want to leave anything to chance. Although he was confident in his answers, he knew the importance of preparation.
Bridget leaned over. "Just stay focused and answer the questions clearly. You don't need to explain more than necessary. Keep it simple."
Michael nodded, taking a deep breath. "Got it. I just hope they don't drag this out. I have a lot to do back at the office."
Bridget chuckled. "Don't we all? But this is important. Just stay calm, and you'll do fine."
As the committee members began to take their seats, he glanced at his watch, noting the time. It was almost 10 a.m., and the room was filled with spectators, press, and other interested parties.
"Good luck," Juliet said, giving him a reassuring nod. "We're right behind you."
Michael appreciated the support. It was good to have a solid team with him, especially with all the eyes on him. He took another deep breath, ready to face whatever questions the committee would throw his way.
"Now, let's get this started."
