Chapter 247: The Second Day

Chapter 247: The Second Day

Michael and his team arrived at the courthouse the next day, the morning sun casting long shadows across the steps. Michael, dressed in a sharp suit, led the group with a determined expression. Bridget, Juliet, and Antoinette walked beside him, their faces set with resolve.

As they approached the courthouse entrance, the familiar hustle and bustle of legal proceedings greeted them. Lawyers, journalists, and onlookers filled the area. Michael glanced at his team, giving them a reassuring nod before they stepped inside.

Once inside the courtroom, they took their seats at the defense table. The room was already filling up, the audience settling into their chairs with quiet murmurs. Michael took a deep breath, calming his nerves. He glanced at Collins, who gave him a brief, encouraging nod.

The judge's bench stood imposingly at the front of the room, the American flag hanging prominently behind it. The court clerk was busy organizing paperwork, and the stenographer adjusted her machine in preparation for the session. The jury box, still empty, waited for the jurors to arrive.

The doors at the back of the courtroom opened, and the VirtuReal legal team entered, their expressions equally serious. They took their seats on the opposite side of the room, exchanging brief nods with their own colleagues.

Michael's gaze met Bridget's, and she gave him a small, reassuring smile. Juliet and Antoinette both looked equally supportive.

The bailiff called the courtroom to order, and the chatter subsided immediately. Judge Anderson entered, her robe flowing as she took her seat at the bench. She adjusted her glasses and looked over the courtroom, her presence commanding respect.

"Good morning," Judge Anderson began, her voice firm and steady. "We are reconvening today to continue the proceedings in the case of VirtuReal Innovations versus Reyes Corporation. I have reviewed the additional evidence submitted yesterday and will hear further arguments and witness testimonies today."

She glanced at both legal teams, her eyes sharp and attentive. "Mr. Collins, Mr. Carter, are you both ready to proceed?"

Collins stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "Yes, Your Honor."

Carter mirrored his movement. "We are ready, Your Honor."

"Very well," Judge Anderson said. "Mr. Carter, you may proceed with your witness."

Carter nodded and approached the witness stand. "Your Honor, at this time, we call Dr. Sarah Edwards to the stand."

A woman in her mid-forties, dressed in a professional suit, approached the stand and was sworn in. She took her seat and faced the courtroom with a composed demeanor.

"Dr. Edwards, please state your full name and occupation for the record," Carter began.

"My name is Dr. Sarah Edwards, and I am the Chief Technical Officer at VirtuReal Innovations," she replied.

Carter nodded. "Dr. Edwards, can you describe the nature of your work at VirtuReal Innovations?"

Dr. Edwards cleared her throat. "I oversee the development and implementation of our virtual reality technologies. This includes research, design, and ensuring our proprietary information remains secure."

Carter continued, "And can you explain how your work relates to the claims against Reyes Corporation?"

Dr. Edwards leaned forward slightly. "We have evidence that Reyes Corporation's VR technology contains significant similarities to our own. Our team has conducted detailed analyses and found that certain algorithms and design elements used by Reyes Corporation are identical to those developed by VirtuReal Innovations."

"Thank you, Dr. Edwards," Carter said, turning to the judge. "Your Honor, we would like to present our findings as evidence to support our claim."

Judge Anderson nodded. "Proceed."

As Carter and Dr. Edwards presented their evidence, Michael listened intently, his mind racing through the strategies he and Collins had discussed. When it was their turn to cross-examine, Collins stood and approached the witness stand.

"Dr. Edwards," Collins began, addressing the witness with a calm yet firm tone, "you mentioned that your team found significant similarities between VirtuReal's technology and Reyes Corporation's technology. Can you specify what these similarities are?"

Dr. Edwards detailed the technical aspects, explaining the algorithms and design elements. Collins listened carefully, occasionally glancing at Michael, who remained composed and focused.

"Thank you, Dr. Edwards," Collins said once she finished her explanation. "Now, I'd like to shift our focus slightly. Can you tell the court if you or any member of your team at VirtuReal Innovations has ever met Mr. Michael Reyes?"

"Not once?" Collins pressed.

"That's correct," Dr. Edwards confirmed.

Carter immediately stood up. "Objection, Your Honor. The line of questioning is irrelevant to the case at hand."

Collins quickly countered. "Your Honor, it is crucial to establish whether there has been any direct contact between Mr. Reyes and VirtuReal Innovations. If there has been no interaction, it supports our argument that any similarities are purely coincidental."

Judge Anderson considered this for a moment before nodding. "Objection overruled. Continue, Mr. Collins."

"Thank you, Your Honor," Collins said, turning back to Dr. Edwards. "So, to confirm, there has been no direct contact or interaction between you or your team and Mr. Reyes?"

"That is correct," Dr. Edwards reiterated.

Collins nodded. "And during your investigation, did you find any evidence that Mr. Reyes had access to VirtuReal Innovations' proprietary information?"

Dr. Edwards shook her head. "No, we did not find any direct evidence of that."

"Thank you, Dr. Edwards," Collins said. "No further questions."

Collins returned to his seat, giving Michael a reassuring look. The absence of any direct contact between Michael and VirtuReal Innovations bolstered their defense.

Judge Anderson turned her attention to Carter. "Mr. Carter, do you have any redirect?"

Carter shook his head. "No, Your Honor."

"Very well," Judge Anderson said. "We will take a brief recess before proceeding with further witness testimonies."

As the judge exited the courtroom, Michael leaned over to Collins. "That went well," he whispered.

Collins nodded. "Yes, it did. Now prepare yourself because you are getting called next."

Michael took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. He knew this moment would be critical. As the courtroom began to empty for recess, Bridget, Juliet, and Antoinette gathered around him.

"You're going to do great, Michael," Bridget said, squeezing his arm.

Juliet nodded. "Just tell the truth and stay calm. We've got your back."

Antoinette smiled reassuringly. "Remember, we've prepared for this. You'll be fine."

Michael nodded, grateful for their support. He took another deep breath, mentally preparing himself for what lay ahead. The minutes of the recess seemed to stretch on forever, but finally, the bailiff called the courtroom to order once more.
