Chapter 311: Taken Aback
Chapter 311: Taken Aback
After the meeting with the CIA Agent, they made their way to the door and Bailey opened it for Michael. Standing just outside was Bridget. She had been waiting patiently since Michael entered the room with Bailey.
"Sorry it took so long," Michael said, stepping out into the hallway.
Bridget gave him a reassuring smile. "It's alright. What did you discuss there?"
Michael glanced around to ensure no one was within earshot before responding. "It's something important, Bridget. But I can't tell you the details right now."
Her eyes searched his face for a moment, then she nodded, accepting his response. "I understand. Just promise me you're making the right decision."
Michael placed a hand on her shoulder, squeezing it gently. "I promise. Let's go get some fresh air."
As they walked out of the building and into the sunlit courtyard, Michael's mind raced with the implications of his agreement with the U.S. government. He had taken a significant step, and the weight of it pressed on his shoulders. But he knew he had to remain focused and strong, not just for himself but for everyone who depended on him.
Bridget broke the silence as they strolled through the gardens. "Michael, whatever it is, I'm here for you. We'll face it together."
Michael smiled, grateful for her unwavering support. "Thank you, Bridget. That means a lot to me. Now shall we continue on our vacation here in Boracay? I'm sure Juliet and Antoneitte must be looking for us. After all, we have been missing for quite some time," Michael said, trying to lighten the mood.
Bridget chuckled softly. "Yes, they must be wondering where we've disappeared to. Let's go find them."
They made their way back to the resort, where Juliet and Antoinette were waiting by the pool, enjoying the warm Boracay sun. Juliet spotted them first and waved them over, her face lighting up with a smile.
"There you two are! We were starting to think you'd gotten lost," Juliet teased.
"Sorry about that," Michael said, taking a seat beside them. "We had some unexpected business to attend to."
"Business in Boracay? That's unprecedented. I thought we were here to relax and enjoy the trip. Why are we dealing with work stuff now?" Antoinette asked, raising an eyebrow.
Michael sighed, glancing at Bridget. "I know, it's not ideal. But sometimes things come up that can't wait. I promise, though, we'll make the most of the rest of our time here."
Juliet leaned back in her chair, studying Michael. "Well, as long as everything's alright. We trust you, Michael. Just don't overwork yourself. This vacation is for you too."
Michael smiled, appreciating their concern. "Thanks, Juliet. I promise I'll relax. Let's enjoy the rest of the day."
The group spent the afternoon lounging by the pool, laughing and sharing stories. The warmth of the sun and the soothing sound of the waves helped Michael momentarily forget the weight of his responsibilities. For a few hours, he allowed himself to be fully present, savoring the company of his friends.
As evening approached, they decided to have dinner at a beachfront restaurant. The setting sun casts a golden hue over the ocean, creating a picturesque backdrop for their meal. They chose a table close to the water, the gentle lapping of the waves providing a calming soundtrack to their conversation.
Over dinner, they talked about their favorite memories from the trip and made plans for the remaining days.
Later that night, Michael and Bridget walked along the beach. There were only a few people passing by and yet the clubs and bars were alive with music and laughter, filling the air with a festive energy. Michael took Bridget's hand, feeling the warmth of her touch grounding him amidst the chaos of his thoughts.
"This is nice," Bridget said, looking up at the stars. "I love how peaceful it is out here."
Michael nodded, his eyes also drifting to the night sky. "Yeah, it's a perfect way to end the day. Sometimes, I wish we could just stay here forever and forget about all the responsibilities waiting for us back home."
Bridget squeezed his hand gently. "I know what it feels."
"The moon is beautiful isn't it?" Michael said, his voice soft as he gazed at the glowing orb in the sky.
"It is," Bridget agreed, her eyes reflecting the serene beauty of the night. "Moments like this remind me that there's still so much good in the world, even when things get tough."
"Did you know in Japanese culture, there's a phrase, 'tsuki ga kirei desu ne,' which literally means 'the moon is beautiful, isn't it?' But it's also a poetic way of saying 'I love you,'" Michael said tenderly.
"Oh so you are subtly saying that you love me," Bridget replied with a playful smile.
Michael chuckled softly. "Yes, I guess I am. I love you, Bridget."
Oh…what was that feeling? Michael thought. He felt lighter and his heart felt like it was swelling with warmth.
"Why do I feel like I have a great chance here?" Michael thought to himself, the realization of his deep feelings for Bridget making him feel both vulnerable and exhilarated. He looked into her eyes, seeing the same warmth and affection reflected back at him.
"Because you do, Michael," Bridget said so softly that Michael didn't catch that.
"What was it?"
"You didn't hear me?"
"Yeah…" Michael rubbed the back of his neck, feeling a bit embarrassed. "Can you say it again?"
Bridget stepped closer, her eyes locked onto his. "I said, because you do, Michael. You have a great chance here, with us, with everything."
Before Michael could respond, Bridget leaned in and kissed him on the lips.
Michael's eyes widened, he was taken aback by the sudden kiss, but he quickly melted into it, feeling the world around him fade away. When they finally pulled away, Michael looked into Bridget's eyes, seeing the depth of her feelings mirrored in her gaze.
"Bridget," Michael began, his voice soft but full of conviction, "I promise you, whatever happens, we'll face it together. You're my strength, and I won't let anything come between us."
Bridget smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek. "And you're mine, Michael. No matter what challenges we face, we'll get through them together."
They stood there for a moment, wrapped in each other's arms, the world around them feeling distant and unimportant compared to the connection they shared.
