Chapter 392 Guarantee
Chapter 392 Guarantee
Chapter 392 Guarantee
As soon as Lorenzo stepped inside the gate of the mansion, he saw Regulus and a few other werewolves standing in the clearing close by. It looked like they were all having a sparring session with each other.
Among all those werewolves, his eyes caught sight of one particular werewolf who he knew.
‘Cillian!’ Lorenzo narrowed his eyes at that boy, who also happened to look at him just at that very moment.
Cillian instantly looked away as though he was guilty of something.
And Lorenzo instantly understood why Cillian was behaving like that. ‘Of course, it was him who went and spread the gossip to Lord Regulus! Who else would spy on me? I should have known it was him.’
Now, although Lorenzo was aware of who was behind what transpired in the morning, there was nothing that he could do about it. So, he simply sucked his breath and walked in the direction of the Lord.
Regulus was sitting down on a new armchair while enjoying the fight between two of the men.
He smirked when he saw Lorenzo walking towards him while holding his head down. ‘I wonder what news he brought today,’ he thought to himself and gestured to his bodyguards to let Lorenzo come closer to him.
“You’re back already?” Regulus looked at Lorenzo and asked.
“Yes, Milord.” Lorenzo bowed before Regulus.
“I thought you were going to take a little bit more time than this.” Regulus clicked his tongue and turned his head to observe the fight that was still going on. “I even arranged myself a little source of entertainment so that I wouldn’t get bored while I waited for you.”
Lorenzo didn’t know how to respond to that. However, considering how Regulus was surrounded by most of the men who he worked closely with, Lorenzo did wonder if Regulus had decided for himself that the King WAS the murderer and called off the other ongoing searches altogether.
Regulus suddenly turned his head and gave a corner-eyed glare when he didn’t hear Lorenzo talking already. “Well? What are you waiting for?” he asked scornfully.
Lorenzo cleared his throat and began talking while keeping his gaze on the ground. “I did manage to ask the King today about his whereabouts. And I was told that His Majesty had gone for fresh air that evening. He was taking a stroll through the forest that lies on the outskirts of the town.”
“Taking a stroll through the forest, huh?” Regulus looked at Lorenzo. It didn’t look like Regulus believed what he just heard. “Doesn’t it sound too absurd? Taking fresh air in the forest?” he questioned Lorenzo to get some kind of reaction out of him. He wanted to test if Lorenzo was making it up.
Lorenzo lifted his gaze from the ground and looked at the Lord with eyes full of confidence. After all, he had repeated what the Acting Beta had told him, word by word. “That was what I was told, Milord. And I believe it since the Beta also agreed that he was with the King at that time.”
“The Beta also agreed?” Regulus turned to face Lorenzo properly and raised his brows. The whole thing sounded a little fishy to him.
He raised his brows and asked, “And what was the ‘Beta’ doing there? And why did he also agree that he was with the King? Did you perhaps make it too apparent that I was suspecting the King to be the murderer?”
Lorenzo widened his eyes and immediately bowed his head. “Of course, not, Milord!” he exclaimed in fear. He was afraid that he would be beaten to death right on the spot if he was to agree to it.
“The Beta probably had some business with the King. He happened to arrive there when the King and I were in the middle of our conversation,” he further clarified.
Regulus still looked unconvinced by what Lorenzo said to him. And he asked in a rather threatening tone, “Lorenzo, are you sure that it is what the King said? Because it sounds like some horseshit to me. Why would a King need to take a stroll through the forest? He can take a walk in his own darn garden, can’t he?”
“I have no idea why the King needed that stroll. But that was what I was told. And the King never lies to me.” Lorenzo heaved a deep breath in and tried to sound confident. “He considers me a true friend and shares almost everything with me. So, I am confident that the forest was where he was if he said that to me.”
Regulus was about to say something when one of the men who was standing behind the Lord all this while suddenly leaned in and whispered something in the Lord’s ear.
Lorenzo could figure out a few words and bits but he pretended not to hear anything.
When that man finished his whispering, Regulus chuckled and looked at Lorenzo again. And he mockingly said, “Well, it looks like the King doesn’t always share everything with his true friend. Did you know that he brutally killed a man right after leaving the distillery?”
Lorenzo’s heart skipped a beat when he heard that absurdity. “He killed a man?” he repeated in disbelief.
“Apparently, he did.” Regulus looked at Lorenzo through his brows and said, “A man of his own clan.”
Lorenzo’s head started to spin. He couldn’t believe that the naïve young man was capable of taking a life.
‘Was that why he looked so… scared? Because he unintentionally killed that man?’ he wondered while recalling how the King’s hands were shaking and how he looked so lost.
“Maybe there’s a reason behind that. Maybe he wasn’t in control of his emotions for some reason.” He tried to rationalize the King’s action. “Else he isn’t someone who can kill.”
Regulus narrowed his eyes at Lorenzo and asked, “Isn’t someone as precious as Ruby enough of a reason? I did some more digging and heard she is very dear to the King.”
It was clear as day what Regulus was pointing at.
Lorenzo still shook his head and mumbled in a broken voice, “I don’t think so, Milord. I can guarantee that His Majesty doesn’t even know that Ruby is here.”
Regulus simply scrunched his nose and said in a nonchalant manner, “Your guarantee doesn’t work anymore. We're done here.”
