Chapter 638: 204. Calm Knight_3
In the World of Wizards, knights are, in a certain sense, wizards as well, with the main difference being the broad and narrow meanings of the term.
The narrow sense of a wizard specifically refers to a spellcaster who extracts mana from nature, stores it in their Spiritual Ocean, and then uses Spell Blueprints to unleash it.
In the broader sense, all extraordinary beings who use mana could be referred to as wizards.
The broad and narrow differences solely relate to how one employs mana.
The knights of this world can also use mana.
Their approach differs from that of wizards.
Soul Energy, life force, and physical strength, these three inherent powers of mankind, can all be used to drive mana.
Wizards use their souls to drive mana.
Knights, however, use physical strength to drive mana.
Wizards guide mana through Spell Blueprints, while knights use martial techniques.
Wizards store mana in their Spiritual Ocean while knights house it within their five viscera and six bowels.
Unlike wizards whose Spiritual Ocean can only contain one or a few types of mana specifically, after lengthy training, every organ of a knight’s five viscera and six bowels can each contain one type of mana.
Diverse internal mana and their five viscera and six bowels being periodically eroded by mana guarantees that knights will shoulder a greater physical burden in their strengthening process.
Typically, knights peak during their middle and young age stages. After that point, even restorative foods and healing medicines can’t prevent the accumulating effects of time and mana.
That’s the reason there hasn’t yet been a knight who entered Outer Space.
Currently, the Way of the Knight is almost completely exiting the historical stage.
The only knight group that still exists as an organization is a subordinate power of the Pure Light Court, the Pale Justice.
All other knight groups, regardless of how long they have been around or how glorious they once were, are experiencing serious personnel loss.
The situation for the knights of this world is somewhat similar to that of the witchers in a video game series “Witcher”, but it is also slightly different.
In the “Witcher” video game series, the witchers are an extraordinary race created by powerful casters.
In this world, however, like wizards, knights too are exceptional beings born from natural evolution.
In the present day, where the Way of the Knight is progressively declining, the techniques mastered by knights haven’t disappeared. Instead, they have been absorbed and transformed into magic by wizards.
In a certain sense, the Way of the Knight has been continued by wizards under the name of magic.
The most typical example is Noland’s current residence, the Silent Maiden.
Professor Erica, its founder, was originally a princess from a kingdom that possessed a knightly martial art called White Spirit Swordsmanship.
After establishing the Silent Maiden, Erica transformed White Spirit Swordsmanship into an exclusive magic sword skill of the Silent Maiden. This is the same sword technique that Comini used when Noland challenged him, the sword emitting a dazzling light.
The old housekeeper before him, known by the title of the Calm Knight, his appearance, physique, and temperament must have changed significantly from when he was young.
Under these circumstances, practically nobody could recognize him.
Noland’s direct identification of his past caught Kaiden off guard consequently making him think:
The other party might be courting him through buying the cheap islands, in hope of acquiring his cultivation secrets.
But the question is, how does the other party know his identity?
Could it be that past enemies have caught up with him?
Kaiden drew in his waist and abdomen slightly, curling his body and subtly gathering his strength.
He stared intently at Noland’s face, locking onto his hands and feet with his peripheral vision.
Noland once again experienced the feeling he had during his fight with Comini, as if an unseen force was enveloping him.
If he made a move, he would face a fierce onslaught.
Noland retained his calm demeanor having roughly guessed what was going through Kaiden’s mind:
“Calm down, Kaiden. I am not your enemy.”
“But how could you recognize me at first sight…” Kaiden said.
“I don’t see a need to explain that to you, just as I don’t have to explain why I bought those five islands.”
Noland said with a faint smile:
“Your name was glorious 30 years ago. Now you have a young noble descendant following you. If I harbored malicious intent, you might be able to resist. But did you forget, I’m an Enforcement Wizard. I’m a co-defensive wizard enforcer appointed by the Deep Sea Academy.”
Kaiden’s body swayed slightly. Clearly, the title of “Enforcement Wizard” slightly reduced his wariness of Noland, but not much more than that.
“I believe we have spoken enough for today, Mr. Jarvis. Let me show you out,” Kaiden said as he slowly rose to his feet.
Noland seemed thoughtful, squinting at Kaiden while remaining seated:
“Calm Knight, it seems you have caused quite a lot of trouble in the past. Just a slight wind makes you jump like a frightened grasshopper, totally unlike the loyal and kind housekeeper I have been used to. Are you planning to secretly leave the Suman Archipelago with Sienna after I leave?”
Noland had to admit that what was happening now was slightly different from what he had predicted.
He did discover Kaiden’s true identity through Deconstruction Results and knew some of the latter’s Panel Information.
However, he could not use Deconstruction to learn about events that happened in the distant past.
Judging by Kaiden’s on-edge reaction, he must have caused a huge deal of trouble in the past, which was why he was so hostile towards someone who had uncovered his true identity.
