Chapter 94 The Truth

When the meeting was over, Betty returned

to her office. During her lunch break, she hesitated and came to Jessica’s office.

“Jessica,” she said, “Can I ask you something?”

She was a senior journalist with more than 10 years of working experience. She used to work for a newspaper, but later she was tired of collecting and writing news stories for community journals, so she came to the magazine as an editor.

“What is it?” Jessica asked.

Betty bit her lip. “I wanted to ask you about the Martin family kidnapping ten years ago.”

Obviously, she didn’t expect Betty to come out with that question. She was stunned for a moment, then a little nervous. “Why do you ask that, Betty?”

She couldn’t think of any other way to look into the matter, so she asked Jessica.

The kidnapping happened ten years ago. She knew that the only people outside the Martin family who knew about the kidnapping were the police and the reporter who had covered it. That was why she came to ask her.

“I… I’m just curious.”

“If you’re just curious about that, you’d better not ask.” Jessica said seriously. “The Martin family is not for ordinary people like us to inquire about.”

The editor planned to go back to work. But her words made Betty even more curious. She knew that Jessica must know something about the kidnapping

“Jessica,” said she, pulled up a chair and sat down. “I can’t tell you why I need to know this, but I really have to know it.”

Everyone in the magazine went to lunch,

leaving only the two women in the office.

She stared up and gave Betty a meaningful look. “I can tell you this, but you have to be honest with me. Are you asking this because of your husband?”

Betty didn’t expect Jessica to ask her that. She froze. “Jessica, did you…”

“Yes, I knew that.” She suddenly sighed. “Your husband is Kerwin, right? He was a hostage in the kidnapping.”

Betty was startled.

She thought she was keeping a low profile, but Jessica finally knew her husband’s true identity.

Not only that, she also knew Kerwin’s relationship with the Martin family.

Betty did not say anything, but her expression showed that she had admitted it.

“You’re curious how I know this, right? In

fact, after I interviewed Kerwin, I found out that he was the member of that family. As for the relationship between you and your husband, I guessed it after seeing the rings you were wearing. I was

just asking you tentatively,” said the editor.

Betty really admired Jessica now. She felt inferior to her, a veteran journalist who had been working in the newsroom for more than a decade.

Now that she knew this, Betty would not hide her relationship with Kerwin. In fact, her relationship with him was not a secret. She didn’t like being gossiped about, which was why she didn’t tell anyone about it.

“Yes, you guessed right,” whispered Betty.” Now can you tell me about the kidnapping?”

“I know you’re a good girl. There’s been a lot of gossip about you in the magazine lately, but I trust my judgement. You’re not a gold digger.”

She was surprised. Her eyes were wet. “Thank you, Jessica.”

Since two years ago, Betty had suffered all kinds of misunderstandings. At first she tried to explain, and then she remained silent, because she knew no one would believe her.

Now Jessica said she trusted her, so she was really touched.

“I was shocked when I knew you and Kerwin were married.” Jessica looked at her with a flash of sadness in her eyes. “Kerwin is excellent, but I don’t think he will be a good husband based on what he did two years ago.”

Betty’s face changed. “Jessica, what do you know?”

Jessica sighed. “You’re asking the right person. When the kidnapping happened, I was working for a newspaper to cover the case. I investigated a lot about this, but before I could publish these reports, I was

threatened by the Martin family not to disclose the details. I know how powerful

they are, so I never talked about it all these

years.”

The young woman now realized why Jessica knew that Kerwin was a member of the Martin family. If she looked into the kidnapping, she would know what Kerwin looked like.

But Jessica’s tone made her feel uneasy.”So

what happened then?”

“At the time, Kerwin was in college. Martin’s family wanted to send him abroad, but he decided to stay in the country for his girlfriend. If I remember correctly, her name was Julia….”

“Julia Davis.” She interrupted

“Yeah, you know this? They were very close at the time. I guess they were each other’s first love.”

Betty thought of the pictures she had seen in the drawer. In the photo, they were still very young, smiling happily. They must really love each other, just like she and Jeffrey.

“In their freshman year, Kerwin and Julia purposely got rid of Martin Family’s security guard and went to a nearby town. But unfortunately, they get kidnapped.”

“They get kidnapped?” Betty asked, puzzled. “Are you saying that it wasn’t just Kerwin, but the girl was kidnapped too?”

“That’s right,” answered Jessica seriously. “The Martin family blocked the news, so everyone thought he was the only one who was abducted. No one paid any attention to the poor girl.”

“And then what?”

“The kidnappers demanded a high ransom. Kerwin was Old Bruce’s grandson, so Bruce paid the ransom anyway. But for some reason, the captors tried to kill Kerwin and

Julia after taking the money. They then locked them in a warehouse and set fire.”
