Chapter 76: New Career Path
Chapter 76: New Career Path
"Stand down this instant."
The voice descended from above the staircase once again. Though it sounded calm, gentle, and deliberate even—it still reached Hiro's ears before the pressure could touch him.
Like a protective amulet, the voice lingered in the air and around his body, rendering the overwhelming pressure useless.
Hiro narrowed his eyes.
This woman had reached a realm where she no longer needed any secret arts or techniques to exhibit meticulous control over her energy. In a sense, as long as the intended ability wasn't too overbearing, she could create it on the spot.
Hiro was no longer certain whether she was a Tire-4 standard or stronger than this.
The voice continued. "Introduce yourself in your capacity as an official, little guy."
The black raven and everyone else was stunned. Although they knew how much their lord adored human culture and the history of their past dynasties, they also understood that it was just a pastime thing.
Although she spoke about officials and the royal court quite often, there weren't any substantial changes to the structure of her ruling at its core.
In any case, they were demons living among demons, and the language of communication between demons is no other than fighting and killing.
Asmir didn't say that the only reason she didn't put emphasis on the literature officials was the lack of an innate aptitude when it came to learning and studying among demons.
She couldn't possibly put a captive human slave in that position either, and the Nine-Tails race was very rare, so she couldn't find anyone with the required mindset.
Hiro was an exception, though.
Although his bloodline was poor, his learning talent wasn't bad. She had seen it all through the week, hence she decided on what position to give him.
Though a position in the court was just too broad, so she decided that she might as well allow him to introduce himself, thus giving him the opportunity to choose his desired position.
Hiro also understood this point, and while he wasn't proficient in political intrigue, as the political wisdom was handed down to Juvia, this wasn't the human world.
There weren't any deep and conflicting schemes that spanned months, years, and even decades.
This was a dictatorial realm where the opinion of one person outweighed the opinions of the population.
Luckily, Hiro still had the {Espionage I} skill since he hadn't found a suitable servant to inherit it.
This could also be considered a job, right? Is the system going to map out a carrier path for me?
As Hiro thought to this point, he performed the standard salute and responded, "This lowly one thanks Her Majesty."
After saluting the staircase, Hiro turned to the six demons, five of which were hoping for nothing more than to kill him.
"My name is Sitri, and I will be responsible for Her Majesty's intelligence network and information gathering in the future."
I dare say that with my espionage skills, I will uncover all plots, schemes, spies, traitors, and more!
[Notice: You've started a new career!]
[Job: Intelligence Agent
Description: You've been hired by Asmir as the first literature court official, and she bestowed upon you the authority to manage the flow of information to and from her Demon Tower.]
…
"Intelligence network? Caw! What's that supposed to be? I can see everything that's happening in the stronghold and report to my lord on time! Caw!"
"Yeah, you're so good at it, we almost got painted as the enemy of everyone Stronghold Lord in the Demon Realm under your watchful eye and great protection!"
"Caw! Who dares defy our lord? They're truly seeking their own death! Just look at what became from that Sea Titan, what fool!"
"Idiot, that Sea Titan is just a puppet on strings, who doesn't know of his foolishness? He actually trapped himself in the Endless Ocean, thinking no one can touch his stronghold there."
"We've frequently left on expeditions that lasted for days, weeks, months and even years… Who knows how many rats sneaked into the stronghold during our absence? As long as they didn't damage the foundation, no one would know of their presence."
Another voice sounded, and it was from a demon that looked like a unicorn, but it was black and ominous.
They were great characters with greater responsibilities, and they couldn't keep an eye on everyone and everything all this time.
[Notice: Your mission has been updated!]
As Hiro listened to them, the system gave him a new daily mission to discover at least three disloyal followers in the Demon Tower.
His reward would be calculated based on their overall status, influence, and social network.
In a sense, discovering three disloyal servants wouldn't amount to discovering one disloyal confidant of the six generals.
Everyone in the room had their own thoughts, and so did Asmir.
Hm, being called Her Majesty and Your Majesty has a nice ring to it. Mhm, seems like I did the right thing, but this also means that his little guy isn't a native to the Demon Realm.
Hold on, did he expose himself on purpose? Is he hunting at something? Well, it doesn't matter… Sigh, my six generals are so disappointing, not one of them is meticulous enough to notice this silent conversation between me and this little guy.
Well, little sparrow deserves some credit for finding him to begin with, I'll give him a small reward later.
…
"Enough," Asmir spoke up once again. "Our stronghold isn't the only one to exhibit signs of change after our prolonged battle with the humans. If we don't wish to be swept by the change, we should be among the first batch of demons to lead the way forward.
"I can say with certainty that our most recent predicament wasn't the work of a Great Demon or a higher being; this doesn't match our style of doing things."
The six generals went silent. Seeing this, Asmir no longer spoke and decided to dismiss them.
They concluded their war discussion and the related matters before she summoned Hiro.
It could only be said that her purpose in summoning Hiro was to introduce him to the upper echelon of power in the Demon Tower.
The black raven wanted to say something but eventually, he flapped his wings and left without saying a word, exchanging a glance with Hiro on the way.
Only Asmir, Hiro, and the two human captives were left in the room. Once the six demons left, the two servants also bowed and left while keeping their backs bent.
Soon, it was just the two of them.
Hiro relaxed his posture, grabbed the nearby high-back chair, and sat by the conference table.
A light chuckle sounded from above the staircase. "So, you're not nervous at all?"
"Your Majesty, don't joke around like that—how can I not be nervous? I'm afraid I'd have collapsed from the pressure if I didn't grab a seat quickly enough." Experience more content on m v|l e'm,p| y- r
"Haha, alright. I like the way 'Your Majesty' sounds to the ears, so I won't harp on this little topic anymore."
Hiro smiled. "Do you want to learn how to sound more imposing than that, Your Majesty?"
Asmir was curious. "Oh? How do I sound more imposing, then?"
"This is called the art of posturing-… Ahem, I mean this is called having a regal aura and a mighty disposition…" Hiro coughed and cleared his throat.
"Just imagine that I am having a meeting with my top officials…" Hiro hadn't finished his words yet when Asmir snapped her fingers.
Then, a few projections appeared on the seats around the conference table, each of them looking incredibly realistic.
This can work too? Hiro was stunned, but he quickly shook his head to clear his mind.
He reviewed a few lines in his mind and started to enter the right mindset before starting his performance.
"This Seat can act with grandiose and style just the same," Hiro spoke in a deep voice, stood up, and snapped his finger.
A thin mist surrounded his body, followed by the sound of running water as a silver river circled his body, looking very majestic and imposing.
Asmir raised an eyebrow from above the staircase, a clear interest in her eyes. "Is this the effect of some treasure? Hm, I can't see through it, how interesting."
"Of course! This Seat's power isn't something to be comprehended or seen through so easily."
Hiro was in the mood right now.
"What little tricks had This Seat not seen? If This Seat doesn't wish for you to see through some things, you can only accept it."
Asmir mumbled to herself, "This Seat…"
Then, she cleared her throat and spoke up in a dignified manner, "This Seat will allow you to join the court, you better not disappoint me."
Ah, what a refreshing experience! Asmir's eyes shone brightly.
This indeed sounded more imposing than calling people little fellow and little guy.
As Asmir thought to this point, she reviewed her actions in the past and simulated an alternate version where she used this figure of speech instead.
The more she simulated it, the more she felt like she had wasted years of her life in vain.
She regretted not meeting Hiro much sooner.
She sighed.
"This Seat is pleased with your contributions! Speak, how do you wish for This Seat to reward you?"
