Chapter 45: Elements’ Qualities
Standing in the middle of the forest where demonic beasts twice or thrice the size of ordinary beasts on earth roamed around everywhere was a humanoid demon with jet black skin and two small wings on his back.
And despite the possible danger that the humanoid demon might encounter with so many demonic beasts around, he was just standing leisurely with a long stick in his hand, seemingly drawing something on the ground.
“If I change this part of the spell and added more darkness tendril rune will it have enough strength to deal a lot of damage?” The humanoid demon muttered out loud.
After pondering for a while, he shook his head left and right, “No, no, no, the problem wasn’t the number of darkness tendrils in the first place. I already knew that with enough darkness tendrils, I could destroy a chunk of the forest.”
“But with many darkness tendrils, they all couldn’t come at the same time and needed time to appear. If my enemy was like the crow, they could sense the nether around them becoming unimaginably denser and they would be able to react to it, my spell wouldn’t be able to surprise anyone with that, I need something else.”
The humanoid demon scratched his head in frustration as he found no answer to the question that was hovering above his head.
“However, just one darkness tendril is not enough to do any kind of meaningful damage to those creatures that have steel for their skin...”
.....
A single darkness tendril might be able to put a hole easily through the weaker boars that were present all around, especially with his spirit stat that has been ever increasing with each level-up, making his darkness spells have purer and denser darkness elements in them.
But if it was the crow or the komodo dragon, then it would be considered lucky if he could pierce halfway through those creatures’ bodies.
“Ah... This is a year-end-physics-exam level of frustrating, maybe even more...”
Blake had spent a few hours outside Vera’s isolated space, standing around with a stick to draw demonic runes on the ground, trying to figure out the formula that he needed to create the new spell that he had been thinking about since yesterday.
He could use Vera’s basement for the spell testing part, but since he hadn’t even thought about what kind of spell he wanted to create, he didn’t want to bother Vera with his ramblings and decided to do it outside of the isolated space.
He had also been tempted to ask Vera about what he should do and whether she had something that could solve his problem, but he decided against it for the time being as he wanted to try and come up with his own spell first since there wasn’t any urgency in having a powerful single attack spell in his arsenal.
Creating a powerful single-attack spell was seemingly harder than he had expected, but with nothing on his agenda except for his goal of being as strong as possible in the shortest amount of time possible, Blake couldn’t give up on creating that spell.
Having that kind of spell in his arsenal was simply too beneficial for him to miss out.
Like ending a fight early without having to play cat and mouse with his opponent was one of the benefits he might get from having such a spell.
However, after testing out this and that, and also thinking about all the possibilities his brain could come up with, Blake was still stuck on figuring out how he could create something very powerful using the darkness elements that weren’t related to hundreds of darkness tendrils.
Just like what he said earlier, it was like a physics exam.
With his photographic memory, Blake was able to easily memorize all the formulas, and constants with unusual exact numbers, heck he even memorized the questions in the mock tests.
But when it comes to the actual exam, Blake still found it quite hard to put all the formulas and constants together to find the answers.
Just like his current situation where he memorized all the darkness elements runes that Vera had taught him and how to use them, but still found it hard to get the answer that he was looking for.
The problem with darkness elemental spells so far was that Blake mostly knew about the darkness tendrils.
And the darkness tendrils were definitely a strong rune to be used in all kinds of spells. They were very versatile.
A single of them could help him move from trees to trees with ease and reach greater heights that he couldn’t get to using his sole strength, a few of them with certain commands could be used as ropes to hold down his enemies, and another command could be used to make those bendy tendrils into a straight, rigid ones that could pierce through his enemies.
But that versatility was a problem on its own. The darkness tendrils weren’t specialized in anything.
Blake had a few encounters with other elements so far, and he could say that each of them had different defining qualities from the other.
He couldn’t say what all of them were, but a few that he knew clearly were the earth element and the wind element.
The earth element was as hard and rigid as the earth itself just like the spells that could be created with that element.
Earth walls, earth spikes, and even the base of the dark earth armor were the earth element, the dark part was the complimentary element that enhanced the base earth armor.
An earth spike was several times tougher than a darkness tendril even if Blake commanded the darkness tendril to be rigid. For example, Blake would need tens of darkness tendrils stabbing holes onto a boar’s body if he wanted to stop it from being able to move.
But if Blake was able to pierce through the earth spike spell to the boar’s body, then two earth spikes would be more than enough to completely nail that boar from moving.
And the case with wind elemental spells, simply speaking, they were fast.
The case with the wind tornado from the crow was a slightly different case since it looks like the wind element was both destructive and fast at the same time.
But it was due to the crow’s strength being above the others that it looked that way.
The other birds that Blake met in the forest, the smaller ones, were the ones that gave a correct representation of the wind elemental spells.
Although they also dive down and attack their prey since their ‘small’ body was still enough to eat half of Blake’s face whole, their main source of attacks was the wind blades that they sent out.
Blake was quite fortunate that he could also use the dark earth armor on his own, but without it, he would have several scars on his body due to the wind blades traveling so incredibly fast that his physical strength wasn’t capable of dodging all of them correctly.
If not for the fact that there was a greenish hue from the wind elements showing where the winds had gathered and made it possible for Blake to anticipate those wind blade attacks before they were launched, then he was sure that the dark earth armor would receive quite a beating.
And the problem with the darkness elements, was it didn’t have any special qualities – or more correctly, versatility was its special quality.
Blake tried to come up with more ways for some time before deciding that he needed more inspiration to be able to do this and went back to the house to cook that chicken wing that he had been wanting to eat after storing the crow’s body.
The marination process took some time, so Blake stored the marinated meats inside a cupboard first and let them sit for a whole day before saying his goodbyes to Vera and going out of the house to continue his journey with his gorilla friend.
The forest was vast, and there were still a lot of places that he had never been in, and Blake was hoping that his encounter with different kinds of beasts would give him the inspiration that he needed to create his own spell.
