Chapter 639 A Pity

"Hold on, Uncle Griffith. Please feel free to make your decision after looking at the unfolded fan. I won't force you to accept it, if you still choose to reject it by then."

Preston was filled with extraordinary confidence. He bet Marcus would absolutely accept the fan if opening it.

With hesitation, Marcus, driven by strong curiosity, opened the fan and gave it a look.

As he opened the fan, a magnificent landscape was shown up on it, which made Marcus shocked and dumb.

It was even more surprising when Marcus looked down at the inscription.

"Oh my god! It's a fan painting drawn by Pa-Ta Shan-Jen. No wonder t it is as magnificent as such! I must say that it is at the highest grade... No, it is even above it!"

It was the moment when Marcus was still in astonishment that Laura, together with Flora, came in. she changed herself into a cheongsam, and looked delicate and graceful.

Laura had learned a lot about manner and posture to present herself as a fair lady in the coming home- warming party.

"What's going on, Marcus? I could even hear you from the inside." Laura asked, looking at Marcus with unsatisfactory eyes and thinking it was a shame.

Giving out a dry laugh, Marcus felt he could not leave this fan away now. There were voices inside telling him to accept the fan, and Marcus couldn't refrain himself from receiving this gift.

Laura and Flora also noticed the fan. They came to the Marcus’ side.

Laura said, "Wow, such a nice fan, isn't it? I guess it is quite expensive."

Frowning, Marcus responded, "My dear, what if I tell you that this fan is worthy more than half the value of our villa?"

"What? You must be joking." Laura replied with astonishment.

"I'm not joking at all. Just look at the delicate grain of the ivory framework and the purity of the red jade. I bet only this little piece of red jade will cost several hundred thousand dollars!”

“Finally, take a look at the fan itself. The painting on it is the work of Pa-Ta Shan-Jen! Only the fan itself is worthy of no less than ten million dollars, even over twenty or thirty million dollars if auctioned!"

What Marcus said shocked Laura, and made her dumbed for a while. She said with anxiety, "Then why are you holding this in your hand? Just give it back to our guest, in case you break it!"

"Well... guess what? This is a gift from our guest Preston, and now it belongs to us now." Marcus said, with his head up.

Hearing that, Laura was dumbed, and soon she became overjoyed. Someone who came to visit them and would like to give them such an expensive gift for the first time was by no means an outsider.

She looked at Flora on her side, and urged, "Flora, go and serve the tea for Mr. Richardson! We have to treat him like our own family!"

Flora pouted, and dared not to disobey Laura. Then she bowed her head, picked up the teapot and poured tea into Preston's cup.

Looking at Flora's delicate face, Preston could feel that something inside his heart was trembling. 'Why is such a beautiful lady living in the house of Maximilian? Does Maximilian have an affair with her? God

damn the bloody Maximilian! How could he do this to Victoria? It is clear that the one who truly cares for Victoria is me, but why did Victoria just turn a blind eye to me?"

"Uncle Griffith, I'm wondering if my gift pleases you." Preston controlled his rage inside and said.

"More than satisfactory, I have to say. I even feel a little ashamed to receive it." Marcus Answered, holding the fan tightly, as if he was afraid of being asked to return it back.

When Preston was going to say something, Victoria and Maximilian came back.

Seeing that Preston was sitting in the living room, Maximilian and Victoria looked at each other with helpless eyes.

"Welcome back, Victoria! Your friend Mr. Richardson is here, and brings along with him a gift for me. Damn, I love it!" Marcus said, waving his hand.

Maximilian and Victoria came in. Victoria knitted her brows and asked Preston, "Why are you here?"

"Just like what I have told you, I'm here to send your family my gift for the home-warming banquet, and the ingredients and chefs for the home-warming banquet have been arranged." Preston answered, smiling.

Marcus realized Victoria spoke to Preston in a weird tone, and he pulled her aside and said, "It's not proper to speak to our guest in this way, Victoria!"

"Dad, there is something you don't know about it." Helplessly, Victoria felt it hard to explain to Marcus the relationship between her and Preston.

"I don't care. You need to be polite to him. Just look at this gorgeous fan, I just can't move my eyes away from it." Marcus said, cautiously opened the fan and wanted to show it to Victoria.

Preston gave a glimpse to Marcus in a delighted mood, thinking that he was successful in earning the trust of Victoria's father.

As long as he stuck to it and did not give up, winning Victoria from the hands of Maximilian would be only a matter of time.

Victoria looked at the fan and thought the painting was indeed impressive. The more expensive the fan was, the less her father should ever accept it. However, she couldn't bear to persuade her father to reject it, as he looked so happy to have it.

"Please, allow me to have a look at the fan." Maximilian came and said with a smiling face.

Marcus waved the fan and said, "You? Do you have any ideas about the painter of this painting? Or the material of its framework?"

"Well, thanks to some books I have read, I can tell something about it." Maximilian said in a humble manner and began to look carefully at the fan.

After a while, Maximilian shook his head and said, "What a pity! It is a replication of the work of Pa-Ta Shan-Jen."
