Chapter 625 - Dear Brother-in-Law (3)
Zhang Jiren narrowed his eyes as his expression darkened from Feng Tianyi's words. He underestimated this man. How did the devil manage to find out about his real identity? He'd been careful all these years, not leaving a single trace behind his every action, so how did Feng Tianyi find out?
"Don't be surprised. You didn't make a mistake, but you should have been more careful when you hired someone to investigate Yan Qiuyu," Feng Tianyi said, answering his unspoken question.
Oh, so it was like that. From the very beginning, he was doomed to be discovered by this devil. He'd never thought that someone else would be able to find out his identity no matter how careful he'd been since then.
Feng Tianyi wasn't expecting this kind of revelation when he sought He Lianchen's help to investigate Tang Moyu's mother and how she truly died. He knew it would be impossible to bring the suspects to courts as the statute of limitation had already passed.
However, he would never assume that his wife's younger twin brother had survived and had been living in the dark for a long time. He had to give it to Zhang Xianzhe for being such a cunning bastard that had successfully ruined not only Tang Lixue and Yan Qiuyu's lives but as well as their children.
What kind of twisted mind did the old man have to be able to forcefully take away the younger twin from his sibling? Just imagining how bad it would be for Xiao Bao and Little Star if they were forced to separate brought so much grief in Feng Tianyi's heart.
"Do you think I would even allow you to come here and join us for dinner if I don't know who you really are? I know my wife doesn't truly trust you right now, and she has questions as to why am I allowing you to get involved with us… so tell me, Zhang Jiren." Feng Tianyi questioned the other man accompanying him within the silent room. "Are you truly the boy who should have been dead and buried with Yan Qiuyu?"
Zhang Jiren narrowed his eyes at the devil, trying to gauge the other man's intention. Would he tell Tang Moyu? However, he didn't think this was the right thing to do at the moment. He was still in the dark about who had killed their mother.
"So what if I am? Are you going to tell your wife?" Zhang Jiren challenged the devil. He wondered how much information the devil delved on and if he was aware of the truth of his accident six years ago.
If Feng Tianyi knew… was he going to blame the supposed dead man? Zhang Jiren would understand if he did. The things Zhang Jiren had done in the past were unforgivable. Because he was blinded by his rage, innocent people had lost their lives and their bright futures. He also didn't think that Tang Moyu would be able to forgive him easily even if Feng Tianyi did.
Feng Tianyi shook his head and pulled his long sleeves up to his elbows before taking a seat across Zhang Jiren. He crossed his legs and cupped his chin as he pondered about Zhang Jiren and Tang Moyu's situation.
"No, not yet, I'm not sure what your motive and end goal are for now. If you are a spy from the Zhang family, then forgive me, dear brother-in-law, I wouldn't allow you to get close with my wife and my children even if you are their blood relative," the devil said with all honesty, "You must know by now that the Tangs have abandoned and betrayed my Moyu before. I wouldn't let it happen the second time around."
He needed to know where Zhang Jiren stood. Was the Zhang family successful in corrupting his mind? If they did, then Tang Moyu would be in danger against her own twin brother.
"I understand." Zhang Jiren let out a sigh of relief and leaned on the back of his seat. "I must thank you for giving me a chance to spend time with Tang Moyu and your children." His eyes flashed with the same sadness he felt for a long time.
"I assume you also ran a background check on me once you found out that I was investigating Yan Qiuyu?" He questioned the devil.
"Obviously." Feng Tianyi admitted. "We have to know what your connections to the Tang family are and why you are interested in Yan Qiuyu's death. Turns out you were supposed to be the dead twin brother of Moyu, but… since when did you know and why you've never come clean and introduced yourself… these, we couldn't answer."
Silence engulfed the two men as Zhang Jiren considered the right words to answer Feng Tianyi's question. If he hadn't witnessed Zhang Xianzhe's pitiful drunken state several years ago, he would have never suspected that he was Yan Qiuyu's son or that he was related to the young empress.
"It was just a streak of luck that allowed me to see past the lies of the Zhang family. I have known the truth since Moyu Jie and I graduated from high school," He finally answered Feng Tianyi.
"But you never told her? Why?" came Feng Tianyi's follow-up questions.
"Because I need concrete proof that we are really related to each other," Zhang Jiren said as if it was the most obvious thing to do back then. "I really want to tell her, but Dad and I agreed not to tell her during that time. I have to admit that was a foolish decision on our part."
If they had told Tang Moyu the truth before she left the country to pursue her studies, they might have a different outcome today. Perhaps, Zhang Jiren wouldn't have to be content—just watching her from afar—if she knew that he was her twin brother.
"Wait. When you said Dad, do you mean Tang Lixue?" Feng Tianyi was left flabbergasted by the sudden turn of events on his investigation.
