"Then you need to work harder to gain Chairman Li and Li Yuanyi's trust. I'm not expecting you to deliver the task immediately because I know this would be hard even for you, Jiren. You must gain an upper hand by getting leverage through your wife." Zhang Xianzhe told his son.
"I understand, Father. I will not fail you this time." Zhang Jiren said blandly. There was no way in hell he would use Li Meili and betray his twin sister. He might not be able to protect Tang Moyu a long time ago, but this time, he would make sure he would at least be a reliable person in her eyes.
This was the only thing he could do at the moment and Zhang Jiren swore with all he had that he would make sure that Li Meili and her family wouldn't succ.u.mb to Zhang Xianzhe's plans.
Until he executed all his plans, he could not allow the Zhang family to gain any momentum against him. Since Zhang Xianzhe raised him as a venomous snake, just like himself, Zhang Jiren needed to wait for the perfect time before he could strike them at their most vulnerable state.
He could not afford to make a mistake at this crucial moment, not when Li Meili and her baby were involved in this dangerous game between him and the Zhang family. Since Tang Moyu had already ruined the Tang family from the inside, now it was his turn to do the same to the Zhang family.
"What about Li Meili? Are you sure you can handle her?" Zhang Xianzhe asked him.
"There's nothing to worry about her. I know how to handle her." He said in reply.
"I see." Zhang Xianzhen nodded, took a seat behind his desk and regarded Zhang Jiren. Although the events hadn't been in his favor for now, he could still wait a little more. As he sat there, looking at the younger man in front of him, The thought that Zhang Jiren he was truly a Tang crossed his mind.
From the way Zhang Jiren looks and acts, there wasn't no doubt that he was Tang Lixue and Yan Qiuyu's firstborn. While Tang Moyu took most of her features from her father, Zhang Xianzhe could see some of Yan Qiuyu's features on her son.
Had it really been that long since he took Tang Lingjun in? It felt like it was just yesterday when he took in a thin and malnourished boy from the orphanage. Now, there wasn't even a hint of that young pitiful boy as he looked at Zhang Jiren.
It was a pity that his Zhang family couldn't produce a prodigy like the Tang twins. If only his sons were as smart and capable as Tang Moyu and Zhang Jiren, he wouldn't have to worry about their family business's future.
Alas, he could only rely on another family's son to help him. Zhang Xianzhe knew that Yan Qiuyu would never forgive him for taking away her son from Tang Lixue, but he didn't have a choice back then.
It had been over two decades since Yan Qiuyu's death and her pleading voice kept haunting him at nights, especially when he was alone. However, he decided that he would bring the truth and his sins along with him to his grave. It was better this way.
Meanwhile, Li Meili decided to go back to the living area to wait for her husband so they could head home together. She knew that he would have to deal with his father alone this time and wondered how he would placate Zhang Xianzhe's anger once the old man found out about the existence of their prenuptial agreement.
"Miss Li." Someone called after her even before she could reach her destination.
Li Meili narrowed her eyes and saw that it was Zhang Liang.
"Mr. Zhang." She gave a curt nod and made sure that there was a decent space between them.
Why was taking Zhang Jiren so long to come back? What's holding him for so long? She would rather leave right now than to stay here any longer.
"Where are you going? Do you need some company? I could give you a tour if you want, considering that you are now part of the family." Zhang Liang walked towards her, his hands behind him.
He looked at Li Meili with curiosity, wondering how Zhang Jiren was able to trap her in marriage under such a short span of time. It was suspicious that the two got married just a few days after he left Beijing. Something was off between the two.
"No, thanks." Li Meili said casually. "I'm just waiting for Jiren to come back. He should be here anytime soon."
"You know, I'm really curious, Miss Li." Zhang Liang voiced his suspicion. "Did my little brother force you into this marriage? I wonder if he has pressured you to be with."
Li Meili's expression turned cold. Why did he have to accuse Zhang Jiren, when in fact, it was she who proposed the arrangement to him? If there was someone to blame for their situation, it should be her, not Zhang Jiren.
"I don't know what you are talking about, but I assure you that what you imagine is not what happened." She responded cooly. Did he really think he could intimidate her?
Zhang Liang's patience had been running thin ever since he found out that Zhang Jiren had once again robbed him tof his goal. How dare that bastard take what was supposed to be his?
When Zhang Jiren stepped outside of Zhang Xianzhe's study, he decided to find Li Meili. Since they already did their part tonight, Zhang Xianzhe would leave them in peace for a few weeks, giving Li Meili enough time to focus on her entry as well as on her pregnancy.
His expression instantly hardened when he saw his wife being harrassed by Zhang Liang.
"Meili. Let's go. We are going home." He said with a cold and stern voice, his eyes never leaving his elder brother.
Li Meili went to his side at once and allowed her husband to take her away, aware that Zhang Liang was glaring behind them furiously.
