"Hurry up." Valerie almost yelled at Preston, scaring the man for a moment. But he calmed himself immediately, switched the gear and pressed on the accelerator, zooming like a bullet on the deserted road. Behind her, the police followed them, trying to catch up with them, only to fail miserably.
The man was driving like a maniac. If not for them knowing the reason why he was driving recklessly, they were sure to assume him to be a racer on the roads after getting high.
"I will not allow Jared to escape this time. He is done playing games with us." Valerie seethed and glared at the road ahead of her. She was livid after how Jared had treated her fellow officers, injuring Ryder and forcing Maggie to escape with him.
If not for the situation to be completely out of her control, Valerie would certainly have put a bullet through his head. That despicable man did not deserve to stay alive even a minute longer.
Valerie turned around to stare at Ryder who had been in a daze since the moment he had received Maggie's call. Since the time she had left with Jared, he had been on tenterhooks. But he could do nothing about it either. The man had stationed his gang members around the Intelligence and any small carelessness from their side would only implicate Maggie.
Moreover, they even had to track the places Jared had planned to release the virus at and save the people from falling victims to his deadly attack. In this midst, Ryder had no opportunity to find ways of helping Maggie.
All he could do was wait for a miracle to happen and a miracle did happen. Maggie was saved somehow and she escaped from Jared's clutches safe and sound. It was only when he heard Maggie's voice that Ryder could calm down and think rationally again. Only he knew how he had spent the time after her departure. It had been nothing less than a trip to hell, one he did not wish to experience ever.
"Ryder." Valerie leaned over and clasped his hands. "She is safe now." Her soothing voice brought Ryder out of his thoughts and he smiled at her faintly. Even though he was still a mess, his heart beating madly in worry, he could not help but put a facade before his friends. Until he saw Maggie himself, he could not calm down completely. And before he met her, he had to stop Jared from escaping again. He was bound by his duties and until then, he could only drown himself in worries and nervousness.
"Maggie has promised to meet us tomorrow. Do not worry, Ryder. I am sure she is in safe hands." Valerie assured her again and this eased Ryder's discomfort a little.
"Do you think we will be able to catch him?" Since he had not spoken for a long time, his voice had turned hoarse and dry.
"I do not know. It has been some time since Maggie called us. I wonder if we will be able to catch him." Valerie herself was not sure and she looked at the dark road skeptically. They were almost near the port and it would take them another twenty minutes or so to reach the place.
"But from my experience, I can say that by now Jared must have already escaped or must have made plans to escape. If he is still at the port, then we need to hurry up so that we can catch him." Valerie spat and stared at Preston who was driving as fast he could to reach the place soon.
Fortunately for them, the road was deserted. Otherwise, it would have been a disaster if they were to encounter traffic at such a critical time.
However, right at this moment, they heard the sound of a chopper in the air and they looked out of the window instinctively, only to find two choppers flying away from the port and Valerie's eyes widened right away.
"Damn it. It must be Jared." She glared at the chopper as though wishing for it to explode immediately. However, it was all her wishful thinking. "Ryder, give a call to the air traffic controller and try to find out if they can detect the two choppers on the radar."
"I am on it." Ryder had already dialed the call even before Valerie had given out the orders. It was impossible for them to chase the choppers now and they could only watch it getting further and further away from them.
They were just a few miles away from the port and since they were already here, they could not return in empty hands. Even if they could not catch Jared, they could at least catch Jared's men.
"They are keeping a track of Jared, Val. We might be able to catch him." Ryder added after finishing the call. But Valerie was not convinced. She had an inkling that she had lost him again and this carelessness would cost them a bomb in the future.
Finally, they reach the port and Valerie and her people entered it quickly with their guns held out. They kept an eye around them in case they were to be ambushed suddenly. They were vigilant as they kept walking further in, only to find the port utterly deserted. They could not find even a lonely soul inside.
"Val, what's happ..." Preston barely had begun when they heard the sound of the ship's horn. In the silent night, it was especially blaring.
"Shit. They are about to escape soon. We need to catch them quickly." She then waved her hand and all the people behind her started sprinting at once.
A bullet sound went off in the distance and Valerie saw one of the men from the enemies falling from the watch post. She turned around and nodded at the man who had killed him. Their way towards the ship was anything but peaceful. Jared's men kept popping up and at one point, they even managed to injure some of the men from Valerie's team.
Again, they heard the horn and by the time, they reached the port ship line, the ship had already started sailing.
