Chapter 677: Harsh reality - Part 1
"I told you I know nothing about this matter." Amber shrieked and the police officer who was questioning her felt his ears almost shattering. He glared at her in disgust.
But too bad. Amber was lost in her anger and refusal to notice and perceive the situation she was in.
The police officer took a deep breath and tried hard to curb his anger. The loathful woman in front of him was testing his patience and he wanted nothing but to strangle her.
"How is it that you know nothing about Jared Augustus when you have been living in his house for months?" The officers quirked his brows questioningly, not caring how agitated Amber was.
Amber gritted her teeth and started daggers at him. But it had no effect. The officer did not even flinch and stared back at her solemnly.
"He only saved my life and I'm indebted to him. That's it." Although her voice was still a pitch higher, she was relatively calm and the officer was glad that she did not damage his eardrums.
"Saved your life you say. How?" He placed his hands on the table separating them and leaned forward curiously.
Amber did not speak for a long time. It was difficult for her to even open her mouth. Those were the dark days of her life and she wished to have never experienced them ever. She lowered her eyes and recalled the day when she had left Joshua. It was then that she met her misfortune.
"Let's just say those were the days I wish to forget the most," Amber mumbled and the officer's brows quirked up for a moment. But he did not probe further into it, allowing Amber to sigh in relief.
"In that case," The officer started again, not giving Amber much break. "You must know something about Jared's work since you have been staying in his house."
"I told you before and I'm telling you again, I know nothing." She yelled and even smacked the table hard in fury only to gasp in pain immediately.
"I would suggest you calm down, Miss. Getting angry will lead you to nowhere and you definitely won't be getting out of here anytime soon." The officer deadpanned and Amber's face paled immediately.
"If I were you, I'd start speaking before it becomes too late."
"I know nothing. I'm only here to be with my boyfriend. That's it. You are barking at the wrong tree." Amber had lost her sanity completely. She did not even know what she was speaking and how rude her words and actions were.
"Boyfriend?" The officer's eyes sparkled. If this boyfriend of hers was related to Jared, it would make things easier for him.
"Yes, my boyfriend. Joshua, Joshua Martin. Call him here. I'm sure he will be here the moment he learns about me." All of a sudden, Amber's arrogance surged and she looked at the officer in front of her as though he was a beggar.
"Joshua Martin is your boyfriend?" The officer gave her an incredulous look. He did not believe her nonsense whatsoever. How could a man like Joshua have a woman like Amber as his girlfriend, especially when he and his friends were actively involved and helping them in Jared's case?
The woman was crazy and was spouting nonsense as though she was breathing air. The officer felt his head throbbing. How did he end up with a lunatic? Why was he so unlucky that day?
"Call Joshua right now and you will know the truth. He will get me out of here in a minute." Amber ordered, not noticing the officer's strange gaze on her. She was more into her dreams of getting out of the place and meeting Joshua as quickly as possible.
The officer was exhausted and he stood up suddenly, startling Amber who still imagining her reunion with Joshua. Without giving a damn about the despicable lady, he walked out of the interrogation room, leaving a distraught and baffled Amber to stare at his back.
"This one is crazy." The man exclaimed and took the chair beside his fellow officer.
"Is she really Joshua Martin's girlfriend?" The female officer who had accompanied him to arrest Amber queried, her eyes fixed on the lunatic inside the interrogation room.
"Do you think she is?" The man asked skeptically, his brows furrowing doubtful.
"What if she is? We cannot rule out the possibility?"
The male officer let out a sigh and rubbed his forehead in anguish.
"I will speak to her again." He chugged down a bottle of water before he entered the room again.
"Since you claim that Joshua Martin is your boyfriend," He started, not giving Amber any chance to speak first, "Give me his number. I would like to converse with him."
Amber's face deflated and she pursed her lips, raising suspicions in the officer's mind. Even the lady officer was dubious about Amber's words after seeing her strange expressions.
"That..." Amber scratched her neck awkwardly. "I do not have his number."
"And you claim to be his girlfriend." The man felt anger bursting through his body and his voice rose an octave.
"Yes, I am. You can ask him himself. Since you are the police, you would undoubtedly get his number quickly." Amber stated as though they were watching a movie and folded her hands.
The officer did not know what to do in the situation he was and he looked at his colleague for help.
Five minutes after, the lady officer entered the room and handed him a slip.
"This is it?" The man glanced at the string of numbers and gave her a look and the lady nodded in return.
Taking a deep breath, the man called the number, making sure to keep it on loudspeaker.
"Hello," The call was answered after three rings and Amber, who was waiting excitedly, jumped to her feet immediately. She was just about to speak when the lady officer glared at her, compelling her to shut her mouth.
"Am I speaking to Mr. Joshua Martin?" The male officer started.
"Yes, may I know who this is?"
"I'm Inspector Roberts. I'm calling you to so enquire about Miss Amber. Do you know her, Sir? Is she your girlfriend?"
Silence ensued for some time and the three people waited patiently for Joshua's response.
"I do know her but she is not my girlfriend."
