Chapter 685: Misunderstanding?
"Why do you think your grandfather asked me to meet him?" Oliver queried as he leaned back on his chair and turned to face the window, his eyes clouding over in a daze, thoughtfully.
"I have no idea, Dad. I am as much in the dark as you are."
Even if Oliver was yet to forgive him for kicking and hurting Aria, Noah still addressed him as his Dad, making the man fume in anger silently. Nothing he said or did made Noah to budge and eventually, Oliver gave up, ignoring his shamelessness as much as possible.
"I just hope it is not a trick of his to escape from his mistakes."
"I do not think so. It seemed as if Grandpa wanted to rectify everything and come clean before us. It did not seem like he was planning anything drastic."
"I hope that's the scenario. I just do not want any more misery to fall on my family." Oliver removed his glasses and pinched the space between his brows. "I wonder when this will all end. I am too tired to handle it anymore."
"You do not have to worry about it, Dad. I will take care of everything. With me around, nothing ever happen to our family." Noah stated with determination and Oliver scoffed in return.
"Yeah, I have seen how much you are protecting Aria." His words hit the mark and Noah went silent all of a sudden, not knowing what else to do to make his father-in-law forgive him.
It was only after the words had left his lips that Oliver realized what he had done and he repented his actions immediately. 'What the fuck did I just do? Noah is trying hard to gain my forgiveness and I am only adding more to his misery. I should control myself from now onwards.'
With that thought in mind, he cleared his throat and let out a cough. "We now found out that there is a spy among us. It is no wonder that your grandfather called me even before I could take a lunch break."
"Are you sure that there is a spy, Dad? What if it was just the news that somehow spread to my grandpa?"
Oliver let out a sneer and shook his head. "I am damn sure that there is someone here working for your old man. Even if the news were to spread, it would not be this quick and it's been only more than an hour since I ended the meeting."
"Moreover, he even had my phone number," Oliver added. "And I have not shared my number with anyone in the agency yet."
Now, Noah had no words to refute and he just kept silent. How was it possible for his grandfather to get Oliver's number this quickly? Even if he had found out about Oliver being alive, it would still take him some time to uncover the details, unless...
Noah's eyes widened all of a sudden and he shook his head in disbelief.
"Are you also thinking what I'm thinking, Noah?" Oliver questioned all of a sudden, startling the young man and Noah hummed lightly, not knowing what the question even was.
"Looks like your old man is even more resourceful than we thought him to be. I wonder why he did not approach me sooner when already knew about me." Oliver mused and numerous questions popped up in Noah's mind.
"I guess I will find out the answer to it this evening. Anyway, I got to go, Noah. I still have a hell load of work to do. I wonder how you even manage such a huge conglomerate when I am unable to manage even a small agency and it is only my first day, to begin with." Oliver complained and Noah finally managed to let out a laugh much to Oliver's relief.
"You are doing a great job, Dad. I trust you. Don't worry."
"It's easy for you to say. I gotta go now. Bye."
"Bye, Dad." Noah let out a breath and looked at Ronnie who was waiting for him to finish the call. "What do you think my grandpa is trying to do, Ronnie?"
Noah enquired, his eyes still fixed on his phone. "Is he really a heartless monster I thought him to be a few days ago or am I mistaken?"
Even though he did not reveal any expression, his face was impassive, Ronnie could still sense the dejection from him and he felt disheartened to see him this way.
"Boss, in my opinion, we need to listen to Master first before we come to any conclusion." He revealed his thoughts honestly. "What if there is another story we have no idea about and we are mistaken all along?"
When he did not receive any words of objection, Ronnie continued, "Also, Master has never done anything horrible in the past. I presume he must have had a reason behind whatever happened in the past and unless we find out the truth, it would be unjustifiable of us to hold him accountable and guilty."
"Hmm." Noah hummed and pursed his lips as he thought about it. "It might be a possibility. Even my father-in-law himself is not sure about the matter. I cannot judge my grandpa without any evidence." Noah's clouded mind finally cleared and started working normally again. All the gloominess that had occupied him eventually vanished and he felt reassured.
"You are right. I will wait for my grandpa to answer my questions before I make my conclusions." Noah raised his head and slowly met Ronnie's gaze. "Thank you, Ronnie. You somehow managed to show me a path. Thank you."
Ronnie was at a loss for words and he just stood still, staring at the man in front of him in astonishment. Although it was not the first time his Boss was thanking him, he still felt uncomfortable every time he did it.
"You are welcome, Boss." He croaked eventually and for the first time ever, Noah found Ronnie to be cute.
