Chapter 706 List of people
Once again, silence ensued in the room and other than the sound of the waves from outside, there was no other noise. It was not until Jared's phone chimed that the two men snapped out of their thoughts.
There was not much change in Jared's expression when he read the message until his eyes twinkled, making Preston raise his brows in wonder.
"May I know what got you all smiling? What's the great news?"
"Another person on our list is dead now." Jared beamed and looked at his phone again.
"Who?" Preston's brows scrunched up and he thought of all the people who might have died while he had gone missing. But he could think of none.
"Charles Miller. He is dead."
"Oh, my, my." Preston sniggered. "He should have died long ago. Took his time."
"I wonder who killed him." Jared mused and switched on the TV to look at the news.
"Whoever it was, did us great help. That man should have perished long ago."
"Agreed. There is another matter too."
"What?" Preston queried, not moving his eyes away from the TV screen as he read the breaking news.
"The old Carter is hospitalized."
This got Preston's attention and he looked at Jared questioningly.
"I do not know the details. He was admitted to the same hospital where Charles was. There is no news about him yet."
"I see." Preston mused and bit the inside of the cheek. I will look into this matter when I return."
Both Jared and Preston knew they would not be getting much information from their spies on the mainland. The Carter family and their friends were too secretive and unbelievably faithful and they had come up with other plans to retrieve the information they wanted.
"Who killed Charles, by the way? Is it anyone we know?" Jared wondered and Preston shook his head.
"I don't think so. I haven't seen this man before and I do not know his tuff with Charles." Preston pointed to the TV screen and Jared too observed Charles' killer.
"He must be a scapegoat, then." He deduced.
"I think so too. If that is the case, then who is the killer?"
None of them had the answer to it and they watched the news until it shifted to the sports category.
Preston switched off the TV and tapped the armrest. "David Peters is dead." He started and glanced at Jared, who already had his attention. "Fredrick Clarke is gone."
Jared nodded, his expression not changing when he spoke about his despicable father.
and Jared mirrored his expression.
"It's the old man and his lapdog remaining now." Jared derided while Preston did not say a word.
"Yes. The people we will be handling now are powerful and we cannot take any risks. Just don't do anything stupid." Preston warned before he stood up and kicked his chair back to make space. "I am "Charles Miller is out."
"Correct." Jared nodded again.
"That's three out of five. Who do we have next?" Preston smiled faintly, his eyes filled with evilness and Jared mirrored his expression.
"It's the old man and his lapdog remaining now." Jared derided while Preston did not say a word.
"Hmm...we need to be careful from now. These two are the most difficult ones to handle, Jared."
"Yes, these and all the other people I am going to kill."
Jared pulled out a file and Preston examined it. The moment he opened, Preston understood that it was the people Jared wanted to end.
Oliver. Aria. Ivy. Noah. Joshua. Ian. Maggie. Valerie. Ryder.
It was a file containing the details of the people he was familiar with and he smiled faintly.
"That's a lot of people there." Preston pointed out and leaned on the table. "The world will be shaken if we kill all these people."
"I can't help it. Who told them to offend me?" Jared's reply was instant and monotonous. It was as though he was talking about plucking vegetables from the farm and not killing people.
"Don't do anything without informing me this time," Preston advised, even though he had an inkling that his words had fallen on deaf ears. "I am still unhappy with some of your decisions."
"Hey, you cannot blame me for that. Who told you to cut off your connections with me and become a stranger when I wanted your opinions?" Jared shrugged. "I just went ahead with my plans without consulting you."
"Do you think it is easy for me to contact you when I am with Ryder and Valerie most of the time?" Preston did not hold back and reprimanded Jared.
"Fine..fine. I concede defeat. Anyway, all those plans were successful. So, don't be angry."
Preston scoffed and looked out of the window, observing the beautiful sunset. The entire horizon was colored with a magnificent blue, red and orange shade. However, he was in no mood to appreciate the beauty. His mind was swamped with a lot of thoughts and he could not help but focus on them instead.
"I'll be careful this time. Let us plan properly before we strike an attack." Jared continued and closed the file, his eyes filled with emotions Preston was familiar with.
"Yes. The people we will be handling now are powerful and we cannot take any risks. Just don't do anything stupid." Preston warned before he stood up and kicked his chair back to make space. "I am going to rest now. I am exhausted. You continue with your work."
Not waiting for Jared's reply, he walked out of the study and entered the room he had been staying in since he was brought to the island.
However, instead of lying on the bed, he approached the window and looked at the vast sea. Even though he was tired, he was far from feeling sleepy. His messed-up thoughts kept him awake and occupied.
'When will this all end?' He pondered and clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white. 'When will I get the life I want?'
Preston did not know how long he had been standing by the window, staring into space. His fatigue and still injured body too did not affect him and he continued standing. It was only when a cold breeze blew, making him tremble, did he realize that night had fallen and the sun had already set.
