Chapter 1210

Emily seemed a little impatient, frowning as she said, “I have no reason to lie to you, and besides, this is personal affair. It has nothing to do with work, so why are you blowing a fuse at me?”

Charlie was so pissed off so he was momentarily at a loss for words. He took a deep breath, his voice cold and firm, “I need you at the office, now!” “But it’s Saturday!” Emily protested.

“I’m asking you to work overtime. Any problem with that?” Charlie said angrily.

Emily rolled her eyes, “Fine, you’re the boss. You call the shots. I’ll head over now!”

“Bring Kya too!” Charlie instructed irritably.

“Why do I need to bring Kya?” Emily asked, confused.

“Just do it. Don’t question my decisions!” Without giving her a chance to refuse, he hung up the phone.

Emily stared at the phone, feeling as if a huge rock had been placed on her chest. She was already on edge because of Gina’s unexpected matchmaking with Martin. Now, she was being scolded by Charlie for no apparent reason.

What on earth had she done wrong? Why was everything always on her?

Emily took a deep breath, swallowing her resentment. She wiped her face, put on a brave face as if nothing had happened, and walked out the door. Seeing Emily, Gina immediately asked, “Does the boss need you for something?”

Emily hadn’t told Gina and Elliott that she was working for Charlie’s company; she simply said she found a job and wouldn’t be returning to Oakdale City for the time being.

“Yeah, some company stuff. They need me to head over now!” Emily replied.

“Now?” Gina exclaimed in surprise.

Elliott added, “That’s urgent. I’ve already booked a table for dinner, I thought we could all eat together.”

The Ferber family chimed in, “Yeah, it’s lunchtime, why not eat first?”

“No need!” Emily apologized to the Ferber family, “I’ll make it up to you some other time.”

Terry chuckled, “No worries, work comes first!”

Martin picked up his coat and grinned, “I can give you a lift!”

In front of the Ferber family, Emily couldn’t say no. This could be a chance to get Martin to leave too, so she nodded, “Okay.”

Everyone got up to see Emily off.

With Emily holding Kya and Martin carrying her bag, they really did look like a family.

The Ferber family showered Martin with praise and followed them out.

Emily became increasingly embarrassed and quickly got Martin to leave.

Once the elevator doors closed, Emily let out a long sigh, turned to Martin, and smiled.

“It’s okay, if I really were Kya’s dad, I’d be delighted!” Martin said with a gentlemanly smile.

Emily was grateful for Martin’s help in escaping the awkward situation, “If there’s anything you need in the future, Dr. Martin, I’ll do my best to help!”

“There’s no need for such clear boundaries even in friendship. It’s okay, don’t worry about it.” Martin’s voice was gentle.

“I’ll get the car and take you to the office. You and Kya wait here.” Martin offered.

“No need, you’ve done enough!” Emily firmly refused. “I’ll just grab a cab.”

“It’s on my way!” Martin insisted with a smile.

“Really, it’s okay!” Emily thanked him again, then flagged down a taxi with Kya.

Given Charlie’s attitude, Emily didn’t dare delay any further. So instead of taking the bus or subway, she hailed a cab straight to the office. Martin was a bit disappointed at Emily’s politeness and distance, but then he thought that she might have been hurt in the past, which made her cautious about a man’s advances. That thought made him feel a little better.

Emily was even more attractive to him!

In the cab, Kya frowned and asked Emily worriedly, “Is Uncle Charlie mad at we going to Grandma’s house today?”

She smiled faintly and gently stroked Kya’s face, “No, honey, Uncle Charlie is mad because mommy didn’t go to work on time.”
