Norah froze, then suddenly spun around to see Xavier in the crowd, holding a huge tub of popcorn in one hand and his phone in the other, looking at her. People were bustling all around, but in that moment, Norah’s eyes were only on Xavier. He was tall and imposing, yet he held this tub of popcorn that totally contradicted his image, calming her jittery nerves.
The popcorn was still steaming hot!
This scene, Norah would remember for many years to come, maybe even decades. She would never forget it!
Xavier hung up his phone and awkwardly handed her the popcorn. “Here”
Norah took it from him, and finding the situation amusing after her initial nervousness, she couldn’t help but laugh.
“What’s so funny?” Xavier frowned
Cradling the large tub of popcorn in her hands, her eyes sparkling, Norah just shook her head.
“Ticket checking is starting, let’s get in line!”
Xavier nodded. “Sure”
They had booked tickets late, and only seats in the back row were left. Typically, the back row was filled with couples who would start cuddling even before the movie began.
Xavier found himself surrounded by couples getting cozy, and even the people in front started getting closer
With his sharp eyes and ears, he could hear things he wished he couldn’t.
Everyone around was laughing at the comedy, except for Xavier, who remained serious.
Norah, who was naturally cheerful, burst out laughing while watching the movie, tears streaming down her face. It was halfway through the movie when she noticed Xavier’s expression and whispered, “Need to use the restroom?”
Norah was close enough for Xavier to catch her mild sweet scent. His hand slightly clenched on the armrest. “No.”
“Why aren’t you laughing then?” Norah whispered.
Xavier frowned. “What’s there to laugh about?”
Alright, some people just have a higher threshold for humour.
She handed him the popcorn. “Eat something then. If you can’t laugh at a comedy, at least having something to munch on can ease the awkwardness.” Xavier wanted to say he wasn’t feeling awkward, but seeing the couples in front getting more intimate, he said nothing and just stuffed a few pieces of popcorn in his mouth.
Norah also finally noticed the embracing couples in front. She hadn’t expected this, even with a comedy film!
She turned back to the screen, pretending she saw nothing.
Midway through the movie, Xavier’s phone rang. He glanced at it and immediately put it on silent.
The movie ended at ten at night. As they left the theater, Xavier offered to drive her home.
Norah’s popcorn was still half full. She carried the tub while trailing behind Xavier.
Xavier glanced back at her and said, “Just toss it.”
“No way, it’s wasteful!” Norah shook her head.
Xavier said nothing and walked on. When he noticed Norah wasn’t keeping up, he stopped and waited for her.
So they went on like this, with Norah always following behind Xavier
Xavier drove towards the Lamont family home. Norah rolled down the window, letting the night breeze in as she hummed a song from the movie
Seeing Norah so cheerful, Xavier felt relaxed too.
Throughout the nde, Norah talked about the movie. When she mentioned parts she liked, she would burst into laughter again.
Xavier drove silently, finding peace in Norah’s bubbling chatter.
Half an hour later, they arrived at the Lamont family home. Xavier turned to her and said, “We’re here.”
But Norah didn’t move. She stopped laughing and was looking out at the streetlight obstructed by tree shadows, biting her lip. “Xavier,”
“Hmm?” Xavier responded, his voice deep, like he’d been drinking.
Norah took a deep breath and turned to Xavier. “There’s something I didn’t make clear. Now I want to tell you formally”
Xavier noticed her seriousness and slightly frowned. “What is it?”
Norah looked at him deeply, and with a determined look in her eyes, she said clearly.
“I like you!”
