Chapter 243

Seeing Emily looking upset, Charlie thought it was still about her mom’s illness and comforted her, “Your dad came today and told me about your mom’s situation, don’t worry, I gave him the money, and your mom will get better soon!”

Emily was stunned for a moment and asked blankly, “Who did you say came?”

Charlie replied, “Your dad! He said his name was Shawn.”

Emily’s face changed instantly, and she asked hoarsely, “He asked you for money? How much did you give him?”

“A hundred thousand. Doesn’t your mom’s surgery cost that much?”

Emily felt as if she had been punched in the chest, the pain spreading throughout her body. Her mind buzzed, and the cardboard box in her hands dropped to the ground with a “bang,” the things inside spilling out.

Her whole body trembled with the rush of emotions from the shocking news, not giving her any chance to catch her breath. Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked at Charlie angrily, “Why did you give him the money?”

Charlie was taken aback.

All the sorrow in Emily turned to anger as she sobbed and questioned, “Who told you to give him the money? A hundred thousand? Why didn’t you ask me first? Do you really think you’re our savior?”

She was full of hatred in her heart, rubbing her face to wipe away the tears before running to her room, slamming the door shut.

Unable to hold back the tears any longer, Emily slid down the door to sit on the floor, covering her face as she cried.

Still in shock, Charlie wondered what Emily was talking about. Had he done something wrong by lending her family money for the surgery?

Seeing the scattered possessions on the floor, he sighed and bent down to carefully pick them up.

There were a few photo albums, a Totoro plush toy, and a Lego castle that had been broken into pieces…

As it got darker outside, Emily came out of her room, her face washed clean but still showing signs of crying.

Charlie was sitting on the living room couch. She slowly walked over, lowered her head and apologized, “I’m sorry for what I said earlier, I shouldn’t have talked to you like that. I really am sorry!”

Charlie looked up from reassembling the broken castle, seeing her swollen eyes and pale face, she reminded him of a distressed princess.

He chuckled softly, “No need to apologize, maybe I did more harm than good with my kindness.”

Emily shook her head, “It’s not your fault! I will return the money, but it may take some time. Also, if my dad comes again, please don’t lend him any more money, no matter what he says.”

Charlie frowned slightly, “Your mom isn’t sick?”

Emily’s eyes downcast, “No, my dad often uses this excuse to borrow money from relatives.”

“What does he do with the money?” Charlie asked.

Emily hesitated, finding it difficult to say, finally replying, “He gambles it away!”

Charlie finally understood.

He nodded, “In that case, you don’t need to worry about the money. This loss was caused by my own negligence.”

“I will pay you back. No matter what, he’s my dad, and I have to take responsibility for him,” Emily insisted, not wanting to discuss it further, “I’ll go make dinner now!”

And with that, she left.

Seeing her sad and downcast, Charlie felt uncomfortable. She was usually smiling, but when she wasn’t, she looked really helpless.

He suddenly wondered how someone like her, who probably lived a difficult life because of her dad, could still have such a good personality. It was truly incredible!
