Chapter 664: Jin Yan, I Miss You
The room was dark and quiet and Mu Zichen’s voice could be heard clearly on the other end.
Xia Ning hadn’t fallen asleep yet. She sat up and looked at Qiao Yu. “What happened?” She then turned to Enoch, who was fast asleep. She rubbed his head and tucked him up.
“Wen Yue fell and Mu Zichen has sent her to the hospital. I’m sure she’ll be fine.” Qiao Yu answered Xia Ning after hanging up.
Xia Ning paused, then looked up at Qiao Yu. “I see.” In fact, she had heard it herself over the phone.
“Do you want to go to the hospital?” Qiao Yu looked at Xia Ning.
“I don’t have to if it’s not that serious. Let them handle their own business,” said Xia Ning quietly. After everything that had happened, there wasn’t much she could do. They might even find her too nosy.
She could neither make the decision for Wen Yue nor change the way Mu Zichen behaved. No matter what happened, only those in the relationship would be affected.
As an outsider, she just had to be a good listener from time to time.
Mu Zichen probably didn’t call to make them come over, but only to find someone to talk to. It just so happened that Qiao Yu was his best friend.
“Go back to sleep.” Xia Ning lay down and stared at the ceiling. She couldn’t help but wonder how Mu Zichen would react if Wen Yue lost her baby now. Judging by the way he behaved today, Xia Ning didn’t think that Mu Zichen would mind much.
The baby was unexpected and its father wouldn’t give it another thought.
She wondered what would happen if Enoch was killed in that accident back then? How would Qiao Yu have reacted? If he had known that she was in a car accident, what would he do?
But there were no ifs. What happened was that he didn’t know anything about it. If she hadn’t given birth to Enoch and he had failed to find her, he would probably have forgotten he even had a kid by now. Time would do that to people.
Qiao Yu’s eyes flickered as he watched Xia Ning lie there. The entire night, he could sense her detachment. He knew that the thing between Mu Zichen and Wen Yue had reminded her of her unhappy past, but he didn’t know how to comfort her. After all, he had been the culprit.
All of a sudden, he was mad at Mu Zichen for his irresponsible response earlier. Qiao Yu realized that he had become the collateral damage.
But he was secretly pleased that something like this had happened. He wanted her to open up. Although she said she had forgiven him, she never talked about what happened. That was probably a sign that she hadn’t actually forgiven him.
But the damage couldn’t be undone that easily. Moreover, she had always been clear-cut on what to love and what to hate.
When all was quiet, Xia Ning sat up in bed. After darting a glance at the sleeping father and son, she got out of bed and walked out of the room.
A slender figure stood by the railing on the balcony with a cigarette between her fingers. She took one drag after another until the butts scattered the ground.
Winter was cold in S City, but she didn’t seem to feel it. The smoke seemed to have numbed her senses.
After finishing another one, Xia Ning pressed a hand on her chest and looked pained. The more she smoked, the bigger the hollow feeling in her chest grew. She only felt emptier.
What happened to Wen Yue was only a trigger and the fire was only growing stronger. She couldn’t put it out, but she was forcing herself to forget.
She then took out her phone and dialed a number.
It went through right away. “Hello, Ke...”
The gentle voice was a drowning man’s straw to Xia Ning. Overwhelmed with emotions, she covered her mouth with her hand and wept. “Jin Yan, I miss you.”
