“Are you angry already?” He teased her with a smile, reaching out to pinch Purple Summers’ puffed cheeks. “Such a crybaby and a spoiled brat.”

Purple Summers was so annoyed with him, “Can’t you speak properly? Can you stop touching me?!”

“Fine…” Alexander Summers obliged, pulling his hands back without pinching her. Instead, he leaned down and pecked her on the cheek.

Purple Summers felt like exploding!

Is this what he meant by speaking with his mouth?! If it weren’t for the little creature in her hands, she would have scratched him to death!

“You’re nuts!” she muttered to Alexander in a low voice.

If they were seen by others, she would be too embarrassed to live!

Alexander wrapped his arm around her shoulder, joking without serious intentions, and said with a grin, “Alright, don’t be mad anymore. Do you want to know what kind of bird this is?”

“You know?” Purple eyed him skeptically, her face full of disbelief.

“It’s a crow.” Alexander curled the corner of his lips with a wily grin. “Crows are truly loyal. They only have one partner in their entire life, and even if their mate dies, the remaining one won’t seek out new love.”

Afterward, he added, “It’s much better than those promiscuous affectionate couple birds.”

Purple Summers:”…”

Why did she always feel… that Alexander was extremely hostile towards her ex-husband? As if he couldn’t wait to step on him at every given moment.

It was truly baffling.

Having a fledgling bird join their family seemed like a significant event. Atra Blanc and her children held a family meeting in the living room.

“I’ve never raised a pet before, so I can only rely on Mom to help me take care of it.” Purple Summers said.

She felt that she definitely couldn’t raise it herself. With both her school and work, she wouldn’t have the time. Moreover, the bird was so small, and difficult to keep alive. Atra Blanc, being a former nurse, had both the love and patience – undoubtedly, the best candidate for looking after the bird.

“Mom is already tired enough from doing housework. How can she have the energy to take care of this little thing? Besides, Mom feeds the stray cats at the garden gate every day, aren’t you afraid that the bird will be snatched away?” Alexander voiced his disapproval with cold indifference.

Atra Blanc found both her daughter’s and son’s arguments reasonable, which left her torn.

Exasperated, Purple Summers asked him, “So, what do you suggest?”

Alexander pointed to the feeding box behind the couch, raising his chin, “Get it over with.”

“No way!” Purple Summers held the food-box further away, watching Alexander as if he was a terrifying beast.

Alexander looked at her with a smile, “The bird won’t survive, Purple.”

“We’ll see if I can raise it!” Purple retorted stubbornly.

With that, the bird now belonged to Purple Summers…

Raising a bird was not as easy as raising a cat or a dog, especially a newborn chick. Its life was incredibly fragile, and a slight mishap could prove to be fatal.

Purple Summers had never raised a pet in both her lives, and had no clue how to take care of a bird.

But she refused to let the bird become snake food for Alexander’s pet python.

Purple Summers carried the fledgling chick back to her room and searched the internet for feeding tips.

After researching, Purple felt as if she was opening the door to a whole new world…

The world of bird-raising was indeed as deep as the sea. She hurriedly followed the online guide, and ordered bird-care tools and feed on the internet.

Even if they didn’t have bird feed at home right now, they couldn’t let the bird starve. Chicks needed to be fed every hour or two. Not knowing how long this bird had gone hungry for, Purple Summers didn’t dare to delay, and immediately went down to the kitchen to use steamed millet with egg yolk as bird food.

As she busily prepared food in the kitchen, Alexander was leaning against the doorway of her room, silently gazing at the grayish-black fledgling in the box.

It was hairless and bare, ugly and ridiculous, but the pair of black bean-like eyes shone with an unusually bright cyan light.

“Protect her.”

Alexander whispered quietly..
