Chapter 71: Getting tired
Chapter 71: Getting tired
It was like trying to tie a rope around an extremely hard soap bubble, like trying to hold air with ordinary hands. That was exactly how it felt to Tim.
The others crowded close because this was the first time anything would come close to touching the Onus. The force almost touched it, but then it would move away like oil on water.
Tim gritted his teeth. It's frustrating him mentally because it seems very similar to putting thread ona needle; you know how and where it will go but your hand and brain will suddenly start not cooperating.
"Ahhh!" Tim finally shouted and moved back, he swallowed and frowned. "Why is this so hard? I can almost touch it and not! This monster is playing tricks with my head and I'm not even joking!"

Jael nodded, 'from what I observed from the little interaction, it was like trying to step on one's shadow, trying to hold it. That was exactly what the ugly monster was doing with Tim'. "Calm down. Maybe you should do it slowly, it might get it then."
Tim narrowed his eyes on him. 'Why don't you come and do it then monster boy! You don't know how frustrating it is!' He thought but he didn't say any of it out loud. He hasn't forgotten what Jael did to him a while back.
"Okay. I'm calm."
He went at it again, and his power came down on the monster slowly and gently, but the monster reacted just as before but also in a gentler manner as if it was simply reacting to what Tim was doing. "This is not working! What type of monster is this anyway? Theres shouldn't be any monster that can't be punched."
Temur narrowed his eyes. "Maybe we are looking at this whole thing from the wrong direction. First, what type of monster is it exactly?"
"A spirit type but it's more like a ghost?" Jael said.
"A ghost? Or some kind of air spirit?" Cele asked.
Eventually they all turned to Litha and asked her. "It's a spirit alright but I don't know the type."
"Let's treat it as every kind of spirit then," Jael shrugged. "Alright, how many types of spirits are there and how can we deal with each?"
She brought out a book from her storage. "There's almost fifteen different clarifications of spirit with different ways to counter them. Let's narrow it down."
She flipped through the book, humming gently to herself. "Let's see. Hummmmm. It's obviously not elemental. It looks like an ancestral spirit but it can also fit into a trickster spirit or a ghost."
"It looks like a cross between all of them." Jael muttered.
"For ancestral we can honor it and praise it according to the tradition of the said family.....we can't do that. Trickster spirit are usually active and always looking for ways to make more fun from people's pain...this thing is a sleepy little shit.
"Well, for ghosts they are undead spirits; they can be dealt with by holy magic or divine powers. Or by Demonic abilities of equal measures." Litha read, looking up from her book.
"Well that's it. Anyone with such powers?"
Jael broke the silence by clearing his throat. "Can we try things that are unholy too?"
"Wait. Don't you just say it might be a ghost? And ghosts are undead spirits? And Jael you can control undeads!" Litha's eyes shone as if she had just seen a pool of cool water in a desert.
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves," Jael muttered but his heart quickened. He's all in if he can help her out. "Let's see if it'll react anyway."
Everyone gathered close again as Litha put her book inside her ring and stood ready for Jael who spread his right hand in front of him and summoned his Codex.
"Well then." He called out his Unholy magic and it came out and surrounded him. Then he began to envision it, not like a harmless fire this time but as something that would burn and harm.
A weapon.
Immediately, his green fire condensed around him like a thick liquid, giving off a faint heat like acid and a scent like an old, old, dark place. His eyes flashed, and his Codex answered; power thrummed between them, and his Unholy magic flashed out in a single hand shaped of green fire.
The green fire hand went directly towards the head of the Onus and was about to touch it when the monster saw the threat and opened its eyes.
The monster's expressive face squeezed together in a frown and the milky eyes hardened and woosh! The monster used a skill! A wall of force boiled out from it and exploded outward in a ring so forceful it threw all of them back.
Jael smacked into a tree with a crunch so fast he didn't have time form surprise. Pain radiated through his back and his head and his groan joined the others. "Wh..what the fuck..?!"
"Ah..shit!" Temur picked himself up, rubbing his side and hissing. His metal band had slid around him as armor but it did little to stop him from smashing a tree.
Tim, Dile and a cursing Cele were also picking themselves up from the bewildered event. "The fuck? That thing just throw us as if we weight nothing!" Tim shouted.
Dile was massaging his hand. "I was so fast I don't know it was coming until it hit me."
"I'm sorry guys!" Litha said. "It must be the gravity skill of the monster. It's also how it can also control its weight so well and now it's getting even heavier. As if it's standing on my spine and waiting to snap it."
Not only has it gotten heavier, but it has also gotten bigger and is now very much awake. Face that resembled that of a grandpa with milky white eyes looked at them with displeasure.
Jael grimaced. "I'm so getting tired of this."
