Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship

Chapter 47 - Foodie

Chapter 47 - Foodie

The Nightmare Star dragged the large sailboat closer and stopped about 300 metres away.

At such distance, ordinary arrows wouldn't reach.

Yang Yi jumped down from the mast, frowning.

"Strange, why is it so quiet? Did that person land on the island? Or...is he hiding, trying to ambush me?" Yang Yi observed.

It was a sailboat less than twenty metres long. At first glance, it looked ordinary, and upon closer inspection, it was even more so.

"Suna, take the helm. Let me try a few shots at him!"

Yang Yi took some units of stone from the cabin, each unit about a cubic decimetre in volume and weighing around six kilograms, just right for use in the stone launcher.

He was ready to fire a few shots at the sailboat to see if anyone was on board.

After aiming, Yang Yi fired directly.

He had been using the launcher for a few days now and had plenty of experience. The first shot landed accurately on the Good Fortune’s deck, causing a loud noise, but it didn’t break the deck.

"Pretty sturdy."

Yang Yi fired six or seven more shots. One shot directly made a hole in the deck, yet there was no response from the other side.

"Suna, move closer and open a hole in the hull for me. I want to see if anyone is hiding in the cabin!" Yang Yi ordered.

He had ambushed others like this before, so he was being especially cautious, determined not to fall for a similar trick.

However, he was overthinking it.

The bobbit worm, with its four sharp mandibles, easily sliced off a section of the Good Fortune’s stern, revealing the cabin inside.

There was nothing in there!

Yang Yi stood frozen in place, a hint of embarrassment flashing across his face.

After all the fuss, it turned out he had been outwitting thin air.

Without further hesitation, he instructed Suna to move the ship closer, set up a plank bridge, and, holding his flintlock, prepared to board the Good Fortune.

And then...he boarded the ship without any resistance.

Ten minutes later, Yang Yi received a log notification allowing him to dismantle the Good Fortune.

The ship's owner was completely done for.

"How did he manage it? How could he die so quickly?

I came over just as dawn broke, and it's been less than an hour! Even if you left a pig on the island, it wouldn't die so fast![^1] I’ve already poisoned most of the spiders on the island!" Yang Yi complained to Suna.

"How should I know? Do you want to throw in some more poison?"

"No, I don’t think the spiders are the issue. Let’s just stay cautious."

In the end, Yang Yi dismantled the Good Fortune and decided to head to the island to avenge him![^2]

He found the following supplies: Black bread x2, Freshwater x2L, Wood x23, Cloth x15, and a Fishing Rod.

?You dismantled the Good Fortune and received: Wood x143, Cloth x95?

It turned out damage to the ship reduced the loot from dismantling it.

Rewind a few hours.

It was still dark when Good Fortune had landed.

Captain Li Rong tossed aside his fishing rod and waded ashore.

Yang Yi couldn’t have imagined that Li Rong would be so bold, daring to land on the island in the dead of night.

“Hehe, sneaking ashore in the dark — totally unexpected! There won’t be any ambush!” Li Rong thought smugly, his eyes bloodshot.

Had he checked his own status, he would have noticed...

Li Rong

Spirit: 67/100

Sanity: 42/100 (Madness – Arrogance)

Health: 100/100

After coming ashore, Li Rong pulled out his machete and confidently walked into the island.

He planned to search for some fire grass in the dark.

Maybe he’d even find a treasure chest.

If he found the blueprint for a tinder coat, he’d be rich!

But Li Rong had barely taken two steps when he suddenly stopped.

He smelt something very fragrant, utterly irresistible.

“This smell… It’s amazing!”

?You smell a sweet aroma, Sanity -10?

Following the scent, Li Rong found a sticky puddle of “chocolate” on the ground.

It was crawling with maggots, but Li Rong didn’t care.

Maybe it was because of the poor visibility at night, or for some other reason.

Li Rong scooped up the “chocolate” with both hands and took a deep sniff.

“So fragrant!”

?The fragrance overwhelms you, Sanity -10?

?Sanity falls below 30, you are consumed by extreme hunger?

Li Rong stuffed the “chocolate” into his mouth, showing a look of unprecedented satisfaction.[^3]

“So delicious!”

In his ravenous state, he devoured all the “chocolate” on the ground, even scraping away a layer of dirt. His belly swelled, and his nails began to peel back.

As for his machete, it had long since been thrown away.

"Thank you, Mother Nature, for your gift!"

Li Rong's face contorted with delight from the deliciousness.

His nostrils flared...

“There’s more?”

Li Rong quickly ran to the next spot, picking up some rotten leaves and eating them with a look of bliss.

?You have eaten an unprecedented delicacy. You feel deeply satisfied. Sanity -20?

?Sanity falls below 10...?

Before going ashore, Yang Yi checked his own status.

Status: Healthy (A human-shaped diagram, entirely green)

Energy: 4 (97/100)

Spirit: 7+1 (2388/8000) ?Talent Bonus?

Agility: 5+1 (23/200) ?Pirate Outfit Bonus?

Constitution: 4 (99/100)

Perception: 5 (172/200)

Sanity: 72/100

Vitality: 100/100

Health: 100/100

Talent: Iron Will, Defies Death

Special Condition: Kiss of a Spider

His agility had increased a bit, reaching the human average of 5 points. He was now faster and more nimble than before.

Energy and constitution were also about to improve, with perception not far behind.

Only his spirit was proving difficult to raise. High-level attributes were much harder to grow than lower ones.

After getting ready, Yang Yi and Suna exchanged glances and nodded at each other, signalling that they were prepared.

They headed ashore and started walking into the woods.

Yang Yi was constantly looking for signs of the Good Fortune's captain’s tracks.

It wasn’t hard to spot.

People coming ashore always waded through the water, leaving clear footprints in the mud.

“He landed on the island and died shortly after. Stay alert!” Yang Yi said seriously to Suna as he took the lead.

He still didn’t know that the other guy had lost his mind and chose to adventure into the island at night.

Yang Yi followed the tracks closely and soon found a discarded machete nearby.

?Name: Ordinary Machete?

?Type: Treasure?

?Quality: Common?

?Description: An ordinary machete.?

The quality of the weapon was very low.

Bringing such a basic weapon onto the island — either this person was extremely stupid, or he really had some skills!

Soon, the two of them noticed unusual signs.

A layer of dirt had been scraped off by someone, but it wasn’t deep, and nothing seemed to be buried.

Yang Yi was momentarily puzzled.

Standing behind him, Suna sniffed the air, her sense of smell sharper than his, and looked up.

“Is that…”

She noticed a piece of torn cloth hanging from a tree branch above the disturbed area and immediately understood.

“Yang Yi, I think that guy ate the rotting meat you launched over here.”

“Huh?”

“No way! That meat was crawling with maggots. No matter how good it smelt, no one would actually eat it, right?”

Following Suna's pointing finger, Yang Yi saw the piece of cloth.

“He really ate it?” Yang Yi felt a bit horrified.

“He didn’t even check what it was before eating it.”

“Well, that’s not on me!”
