Chapter 933: Third Party
“Dad, do you really want to receive surgery at Yun Hua Hospital? Do you want to check on a few other places and seek consultation from other doctors first?” Du Chengji rubbed his face and became anxious.
They had already decided a long time ago to receive the surgery. They already thought of receiving surgery when they came to inspect Yun Hua Hospital. But when he saw his father making the decision to receive surgery, he started to think about the problems that would appear and the situations they needed to face. Du Chengji then felt they were making their decision too hastily.
Du Jiadong snorted and said impatiently, “Why didn’t you do that earlier on instead of whatever else you were doing?”
“Wasn’t I just following you around for days?” Du Chengji felt wronged.
Du Jiadong shook his head. “I asked you to accompany me, but all you want to do is to be on your bed to play with your phone for the entire day. What’s the point of you following me around, then?”
“I… I never just play on the phone…” Du Chengji felt extremely wronged. He had just gotten familiar with Yun Hua, and before that, he had no time to be on the phone all day. At most, he would just check on his phone when his father was awake…
“Young Master Ji, the chairman’s report of the director has been analyzed by many hospitals,” Lao Yongyong whispered by the side. It could be considered as a reminder that it was not the time to talk about him constantly being on the phone.
Du Chengji did not understand it. He frowned and said, “Aren’t the reports sent since a long time ago?”
“That was the previous report. The current report was done by Yun Hua Hospital. Naturally, the other parties should be updated.” Hospital Director Bo explained in a low voice, but his tone was more confident. The ability to send examination reports to many hospitals in one go was considered as the core skill of Junan Clinic to keep them in the competition. It was very rare for a normal patient to be able to queue and register at tertiary Grade A hospitals and get a chief physician to consult them. Sometimes, they might even get a ticket from a scalper. But of course, Hospital Director Bo’s charges were much more expensive than a ticket sold by a scalper.
Du Chengji then looked at Hospital Director Bo and muttered to himself, “You’ve already sent it over?”
Du Chengji instantly understood something when he looked at his father’s expression. He could not help but say, “Is his condition not good?”
“Yes, two doctors have said that it is not suitable for him to receive surgery now. The speed in the enlargement of the lesion has been bigger than expected. The number of satellite lesions has increased by one.” Hospital Director Bo lowered his voice and said, “Few more doctors said that if you insist on surgery, only a complete R1 resection can be ensured.”
“Only a complete R1 resection? That’s not enough,” Du Chengji blurted out.
He had followed his father to a few cities, and now he had learned many medical terms. R0 resection meant that after a resection through surgery, no residual tumor could be found under the microscope, whereas R1 resection referred to residual tumors being found under a microscope, and R2 resection referred to macroscopic residual tumors.
In order to perform radical surgery or surgery treatment, R0 resection was the best option for the patient to survive longer, and that was the desire for both patient and doctor.
If the Du family members just wanted an R1 resection, why did they need to rush over for an examination? They could have just received this kind of surgery anywhere.
From this point of view, the doctors who mentioned that only R1 resection was possible meant that they were advising them against surgery.
Those doctors rejected the idea of surgery tactfully because the progress of the disease was out of their expectations.
Although he knew that once cancer had metastasized, it would grow very quickly, Du Chengji still found it hard to accept the truth.
However, Du Jiadong, who was the patient, reclined against the hospital bed in his hospital gown and said in a firm voice, “Why are you afraid? They might not dare to perform the operation, but Yun Hua Hospital has the courage to do so. Isn’t that proof enough that Yun Hua Hospital’s standards are good?”
He uttered that sentence insincerely.
Du Jiadong was actually regretting his decision a little. He had been hoping to get an opinion from multiple parties and search for more input to act as references before he made his decision, but in the end, it caused him to miss his opportunity to receive radical surgery.
Since he had already missed his chance, there was no use for him to regret his decision. When Du Jiadong quickly made the decision to receive the surgery, he still did it in hopes that it was not too late for him, and that he could still save the situation.
Du Chengji did not feel the same. He snorted and thought for a while. “How about the doctors in America? What do they suggest?”
“American doctors have always been wary of performing surgeries in China. We don’t have the conditions for them to perform surgery, and if we discuss it…” Hospital Director Bo mentioned two difficulties, and he could be considered to have helped Lao Yongyong get out of trouble.
Lao Yongyong had always suggested inviting American doctors to come over for surgery. Since they could not carry out the plan now, it was naturally Lao Yongyong’s fault.
However, Hospital Director Bo was not interested in fighting for Du Jiadong’s favor. He ran a clinic, so when he finished this business, he did not need to hang around again in front of the Du family.
So, Hospital Director Bo helped Lao Yongyong get out of trouble and said slowly, “My personal suggestion is that it’s alright for you to consult American doctors, and there is no harm to have video consultations through remote connection. However, when it comes to surgery, choosing a first-class American doctor might not be as good as choosing a first-class Chinese doctor. Furthermore, European doctors have even greater conceptual differences than doctors from both China and America…”
It had been Hospital Director Bo’s perspective all along. He felt that since Chinese doctors always regarded the American doctors’ way as the standard, which caused the medical perception between both countries to get closer to each other. Meanwhile, in Europe, there was always some anti-American sentiment popping up somewhere. Hence, he had been promoting European doctors not because his connections in the United States were weak, making it hard for him to compete over there and causing him to gain very little profit. It was because the European doctors’ perception was truly different, and it may allow them to gain more ideas.
Du Jiadong did not seem to want to judge his family doctor’s judgment, or rather, he could no longer take the risk of changing his family doctor as he was about to receive the surgery.
“Call your older brother and inform the board of directors,” Du Jiadong said slowly and gestured. Then, the people around him left the room.
“So, the only one who dares to perform surgery is Ling Ran?” When Du Chengji went out, he turned and asked Lao Yongyong.
“Certainly, he is not the only one who dares to perform the surgery, but he’s the only one on our list.” Lao Yongyong was not just receiving money from them and doing nothing. He had been constantly updating the list of surgeon candidates.
Du Chengji knew about that list and frowned. “You’re the only one who caught it? That’s too much of an exaggeration!”
Lao Yongyong pursed his lips as he said, “There have never been a lot of doctors who could perform hepatic metastasis from gastric cancer. The ones we can name are all elite doctors in elite hospitals. They are unlike the doctors during our times, where they would not perform the surgery if the surgery risk is too big, no matter how much money is given to them.”
“But my father insists on surgery treatment…”
“Young Master Ji, there is no time to change your decision.” Hospital Director Bo was experienced in such matters. He said that to avoid the discussion from never coming to an end.
Du Chengji looked at Hospital Director Bo. “I’d still want a third opinion.”
“Just rest assured. Even if you didn’t say it, I would still invite specialists for inspection too. It would be easier to invite American doctors over if they are not asked to perform surgery. They would be willing to come over too.” Hospital Director Bo happily took out a phone and recorded this in his notebook app. Then, he started to give preoperative instructions to Du Chengji. Lao Yongyong listened at the side. The atmosphere between these people became tense again.
