Chapter 132: Vs Rio Ave V

The assistant referee had his flag raised and the referee had already whistled to signify a hold on the match proceedings as he headed to the sidelines to check the situation with the aid of the Video Assistant Referee(VAR).

The Porto players could not help but hope that the decision was in their favor and some of the players were already praying.

On the sidelines, Sergio Conceicao watched the situation with a grim look on his face.

Nothing was going right for the Porto team in this match.

They had taken shot after shot and kept their opponents under pressure for most of the second half, yet they had not been able to find an equalizer, but the opponent had only burst out once and they already had the ball in the back of the net.

He had told his players that he wanted to see in the back of the net before the 70th minute, but this was obviously the wrong net, he rubbed his brow in annoyance, deep in thought.

“Tell Jason to begin warming up and come to me for instructions, he’ll be coming on into the game anytime from now,” Sergio Conceicao said to his assistant, Vitor Bruno, who stood beside him.

Vitor immediately went to relay the manager’s message to Jason and Jason immediately stood up and began warming up despite the whole stadium waiting for the referee’s decision.

Just after Jason began his warm-up, the referee began heading back to the field, his decision already made.

Making a gesture towards the assistant referee who had called for offside, the referee made his decision known to the crowd.

The goal was going to be disallowed.

Mehdi had his leg offside when the center-back from his team had sent the ball at the goal the first time, so the goal wasn’t going to count.

The Rio Ave team, fans, and the manager were all disappointed, but no one was more disappointed than Mehdi Taremi who had just experienced the feeling of the hat taken off of his hat-trick and now he could not help but feel like he had been tricked.

With a wry smile on his face, Mehdi Tarem walked out of the Porto 18-yard box as Augustin Marchesin picked the ball out from the back of the goal and put it down at the spot he had been offside.

Whipping the ball high up and back into the pitch, Augustin Marchesin resumed the game with a kick.

Players of both teams immediately jumped for the ball as usual, but this time Oliveira got his head to the ball ahead of the Rio Ave player who was contesting with him for the ball.

Oliveira sent the ball towards Alex Telles who quickly trapped the ball and began advancing down the left side of the field, but soon had to pass the ball back to Oliveira because the Rio Ave team players weren’t just going to let him advance past them without putting up a fight.

For the next few seconds, the Porto defensive line exchanged the ball among themselves while doing their best to keep the ball from falling into the hands of their annoying opponents… or in this case, their legs.

Finally, Wilson Manafa sent the ball to Jesus Corona who had come deep to receive the ball.

Upon receiving the ball, Jesus Corona who had his back to his marker, smoothly turned around him towards the right while using his left hand to hold away the player.

Managing to escape from his marker with that little trick, Jesus Corona set off down the right side of the Rio Ave half of the field, his objective being to make it all the way into the opponent’s penalty area.

As he took off down the right side of the field, the left-back of the Rio Ave team immediately came at him, wanting to retrieve the ball, but Jesus Corona immediately sent a ball infield to an awaiting Fabio Viera while hopping past the Rio Ave left back himself.

Fabio Viera had been following Jesus Corona to support him and immediately the ball came his way, he understood what Jesus Corona wanted and not even bothering to trap the ball, sent the ball behind the Rio Ave left-back where Jesus Corona had already appeared.

Jesus Corona received the ball back from Fabio and continued his run towards the Rio Ave box, but just before he made it into the box, his leg was swept away from under him due to a slide tackle from the Rio Ave left-back that he had just managed to get past.

Jesus Corona went tumbling onto the floor, grabbing his ankle as he was in pain.

The referee immediately ran over and without a word showed the Rio Ave left-back a yellow card.

Jesus Corona sat up, and with the help of Fabio Viera was pulled up.

He began to rotate his ankles to check if there were any issues, but he didn’t feel any lingering pain.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines, Jason was already in his jersey, listening to the manager’s instructions, but the moment Jesus Corona was fouled by the Rio Ave player, the manager changed his instructions slightly.

“You are coming on for Diaz, but tell Jesus Corona that I want him to switch wings with you,”

“I want him on the left, and you on the right,”

“That left back of theirs is now on a yellow card and can no longer be as reckless as before, I want you to take advantage of that and do what you do best,” Sergio Conceicao instructed.

“Your full focus is to help the team up front,”

“Make a nuisance of yourself and see if you can score a goal, if you can’t, then send the ball to someone who can,”

“We need something to stay in this game and time is running out, so do your best,” Sergio Conceicao gave the last of his instructions to Jason who listened intently as he waited for Luiz Diaz to come to the sidelines as the substitution board was already being held up by the assistant referee.

{Oh, the manager is making a change here}

{Luiz Diaz will be coming off for Jason Bolu}

{The talented youngster has put out a good run of performances ever since his debut and maybe the manager is banking on him to pull his team back to equal terms}

{It seems the fans are also hoping for that as well} The commentator said with a little laugh as the Porto fans hadn’t given up on the match yet and were doing their best to cheer for their team and lift their morale.

When they saw Jason standing on the sidelines, they started cheering even louder while some of them started chanting his name with hope in their hearts that he could at least help the team equalize the game.
