Chapter 901: The Person I Like Doesn’t Want Me Anymore
Even if she didn’t consider herself, she ought to spare a thought for her family.
“Why do you like me then?” Nian Xi asked softly. “Because I look pretty?”
He followed her around at the police station because of her looks? Jiang Yuning blinked several times, looking confused.
Nian Xi continued saying, “No matter how pretty I look now, it’ll fade with time.”
Jiang Yuning lowered his head and wrote, ‘You’ll look pretty even when you’re old.’
“I know that.” Nian Xi nodded her head. “Even when I’m old, I’ll be the prettiest old lady amongst all the other old ladies. I can’t get together with you, though. You are my idol. I respect you, but I don’t harbor any romantic feelings for you. Besides, I haven’t really forgotten my ex-boyfriend.”
Jiang Yuning was stunned; he was staring at her blankly. He was in a daze, as if he refused to believe what she had just said.
Nian Xi felt bad but she continued to say, “I’m sorry, but I think we can only be friends. I’m sure you’ll be someone successful in the future. It’s not you, it’s me. I just can’t give my heart to you.”
Jiang Yuning was shattered, as if someone had just dug out his heart. He felt even more uncomfortable than last night when he heard about her ex-boyfriend; his heart ached. He tugged on his hair forcefully, pulling out a few tufts of hair. He was at a loss as to what to do.
After a while, he stuttered, “I’ll wait for you then…”
Nian Xi felt sorry when she saw how despondent he looked. “You don’t have to wait for me. I might reconcile with my ex-boyfriend; I might even marry him. After all, I haven’t completely forgotten him.”
Jiang Yuning’s face was as pale as a sheet. He couldn’t wrap his head around why this relationship had ended before it even began. Jiang Yuning felt agony when he thought about the possibility of Nian Xi hugging and sleeping with another man.
“I want to see a picture of your ex-boyfriend,” Jiang Yuning said. He had to know how this man looked, for her to be so smitten with him.
Nian Xi felt terrible, but the last thing she wanted was to lead him on. She went onto Feng Ji Chuan’s social account and opened up a picture of him. Jiang Yuning examined the man closely. He was wearing his army uniform and looked tall and hunky. His gaze was sharp, and he looked smart and clean. Jiang Yuning looked at his own lanky arms. He put down his arms dejectedly but refused to give up. “I’ll start working out from now on.”
“You’re not him even if you bulk up,” Nian Xi said harshly.
The light in Jiang Yuning’s eyes went out. He walked back to the bed, lay down silently, and curled up into a ball like a small baby.
Nian Xi didn’t know what else to say other than to sigh. Although it was noble to be a scientist, she just wanted to be an ordinary citizen for the sake of her family.
I’m sorry, Jiang Yuning. If I were to be with you, you might become a burden in my life.
…
The next day, Nian Xi woke up first. She didn’t sleep well that night; the flight was at noon, and she had to wake up early to get ready. Jiang Yuning was wrapped up in a cocoon on his bed; his back was facing her.
“Mr. Jiang, it’s time to get up and have breakfast.”
The bundle of blankets shook its head.
Nian Xi repeated herself. “We’re going back to China in the afternoon.”
He turned to look at her. “Let me lie by myself for a moment. The person I like doesn’t want me anymore.”
His hurt eyes reminded Nian Xi of a sad and lost puppy. It tugged at her heartstrings.
