Chapter 148: Shifting forces
The agreement was very much a sort of magically binding contract between Grindelwald and the entire wizarding world. In exchange for his life after his defeat Grindelwald was required to spend the rest of his days within the walls of Nurmengard castle unless he discovered a way to serve the wizarding communities without targeting the statute of secrecy or dominion over muggles. For nearly fifty years Grindelwald had remained in Nurmengard castle since he refused to change his mind about his ideals. Yet he chose this year to begin acting out in a matter that seemed nearly identical to before yet Dumbledore could tell that the contract was still in effect.-
It was a well known fact that Grindelwald was a natural born seer whose gift manifested through his right eye that was silver in color. 'He must have seen a way forward but I don't understand why he is acting this way if this is true. What did you see old friend to go so far to realize this future of yours?' The headmaster thought deeply before sighing and dispelling Voldemort's magic trying to tap into the schools wards for the fifteenth time this year.-
For the entire time Voldemort had been sneaking about while possessing Quirrell this year he had been trying to find a way to sink his claws into the schools wards in order to try and take them over. But every headmaster of the school has reinforced the wards placed by the founders and added to them making them nigh impossible to breach. 'Arrogance always was one of his biggest flaws after all.' The old wizard mused as he thought about the trouble his old student had caused while thinking none of the other professors were aware of his presence.-
In truth nearly half of the entire teaching staff was aware of him but had agreed to act oblivious while setting a trap for him. Snape , Sprout , Mcgonagall , Flitwick and Dumbledore were all involved with setting an elaborate trap for Voldemort but each stage of the trap was also designed to be solvable by the first year students while also being nearly harmless to them. Take for example the Cerberus guarding the room with the trapdoor to the second test , Fluffy. The magical creature was very well trained and was commanded to only attack with lethal force adult wizards while it was to capture the children who may enter the room.-
The final part of the trap was planned to be a very different matter as it involved a slightly altered version of the mirror of erised meant to trap souls like Voldemort's current state. Such an alteration took time however so the mirror had been placed in a disused room while Dumbledore slowly finished the changes to it. Dumbledore made sure to play on his old students pride by having Quirrell set up a level in the trap as well. This meant once the trap was sprung Voldemort would fall to his own overconfidence and finally be taken care of until such time Harry could strike him down for good.-
Voldemort himself was starting to have serious problems with Quirrell's body and soul rejecting his presence. This caused him to start needing to cut back the amount of time that he was awake drastically to buy time. This was only enough to extend his possession by another month or two at most. Knowing the simpleton gamekeeper's obsession with dragons Voldemort came up with a plan to learn of the bothersome magical beast guarding the rest of the tests as that was the only test capable of forcing him to waste his power and time to pass.-
Nick meanwhile was researching organic forging and was having trouble making progress at all as he felt that he was missing some key piece. It was frustrating to say the least as while certain types of enchantments worked in an unstable manner others simply refused to take hold or detonated during the forging process. For example wooden rings held water and fire enchantments in a very unstable manner that made the resulting product low quality and highly explosive. No skill or spell related enchantment had succeeded in sticking to wood however and it frustrated Nick greatly as he could feel it in his bones that it was possible.-
Bone rings however came with an entirely different problem that Nick needed to figure out, they came with an inbuilt affinity to certain magics. For example the carapace of the acromantula he hunted a while ago seemed to have an affinity with curses and poison enchantments but refused all other types of enchantment. Nick didn't limit himself to just magical creatures but normal ones as well such as fish , chickens and cows but each had their own enchantment affinity that he had to figure out which was a tedious affair involving a lot of trial and error.
