Chapter 192: Book
While both Grimgrip and Helena showed interest in the tree they clearly weren't aware of it's true significance and soon looked over at the rest of the undocumented items in the vault. Steve on the other hand was whining and struggling to try and leave the pocket he was in to get to the small mountain of glittering silver and gold. Nick had made sure that this was impossible when he decided to bring the greedy little one alongside them on this trip since he knew how the niffler would react. The poor creature was clearly distressed at the inability to pilfer the vast hoard of wealth before it but Nick ignored it.-
Instead he turned his attention towards the book shelf at the side of the vault that held only a handful of books. Despite the stasis charm on them they looked positively ancient which meant that they were likely very old when Rowena Ravenclaw obtained them. 'Perhaps one of these books might shed some light on the situation.' Nick thought and walked over to the bookshelf and reached out to grab a book. It was an animal hide bound thing with thick papyrus pages and extreme signs of age.-
There was no title on the cover so Nick carefully opened it to reveal the contents of the first page. There were lines of dense markings that Nick knew were words thanks to his ability but that he didn't recognize at all. He could read the writing of course but he honestly didn't know what language this was at all. {For whomever may be reading this work know that if you are bellow the first threshold of power that the contents of this work may result in your demise. If you wish to avoid this possibility put this work back where you found it until you reach the first threshold.}-
That was the first thing written in the book and concerned Nick greatly as he had no idea what this first threshold of power mentioned was. Obviously this book was written by some seriously ancient wizard but he didn't know exactly how ancient. This was a problem as it meant he had no idea if he met the prerequisite to read what was held within this books pages. Rather than risk it and read further Nick closed the book and put it back on the shelf before grabbing a set loosely tied together treated skins.-
This was the most primitive looking book he had ever seen and so he carefully flipped it open and nearly had his jaw drop at what he found. {The path to power is a long and arduous one that very few of those blessed by the world can truly travel. My name is Chronos and I write this as a record for a future I have seen that is long after my time when the world is set to begin recovering from the great collapse. May the flow of time favor you ring maker.}-
Nick felt a shiver go down his spine after reading this excerpt as the author was very clearly writing this book knowing that Nick would eventually read it. 'Forget decades this person foresaw a future that was likely millennium after his time! Was this written by THE Chronos , as in the titan king of time!?' Nick thoughts were of horror and discomforting realization when he looked at the book in his hands. He didn't know how it was possible but apparently this Chronos person whoever that is had foreseen the future so far that they had written a book addressed specifically to Nick.-
Helena seemed to notice Nick expressions as she floated over with a concerned expression. "What is written here that has you so frightened?" she asked worried about him. Nick clamped down on his emotions with occlumency and took a few deep breaths to calm himself. "It was written to me." Nick revealed seriously earning a shocked expression from Helena as she could clearly tell that he wasn't lying but that the book was beyond ancient. The implications of this weren't lost on her but she found it hard to believe none the less.-
"How do you know for sure?" she asked hoping to be able to refute this world shattering revelation but Nick merely reread the passage from the book making her go eerily silent as she processed this information. "No one else can know about this." Nick said and Helena nodded seriously as Nick stored the book away in Greed. Clearly he needed to read this book to understand what was so important that someone would write it addressing him personally millennium later. Hopefully it wasn't something along the lines of him being the savior of the world or some such as he had no wanting to take this role at all.
