Chapter 209: I'm a professional
An interesting thing about the veritological license was that it was split between different levels based on skill with the rating one got for each level displayed. The levels were called stars and were represented on the license as such with ten stars being the highest. Olivander was one of the few people to have the honor of being a ten star wand maker. Each star was further separated based on the grading system that Hogwarts used but the failing grades were only included past the first star. These grades from lowest to highest were T(troll) , D(dreadful) , P(poor) , A(acceptable) , E(exceeds expectations) and O(outstanding).-
Olivander was a ten star O ranked veritologist and at the end of the test Nick received a metal badge with two stars on it and a large O in the first star and an A in the second. "It means your skill was enough to place you a single rank above novice." Olivander explained when Nick asked about it. This surprised Nick as he had assumed that this was the bare minimum skill to qualify for a license but apparently not.-
Olivander chuckled when he saw Nick's astonishment "To be honest I actually held you back from taking the test until you reached this point to preserve my own reputation. After all I am the world premier wand crafter so any student of mine even one for a few months needs to be extraordinary." he said honestly. Nick could understand this as it made plenty of sense if you thought about it. Olivander had rarely ever taught another person and was the single most renowned wandmaker in the world so if his students weren't at a certain level when they were tested it would state that he was not nearly as skilled as a teacher lessening his reputation.-
It was stupid but that was just the way reputation works in the wizarding world unfortunately. "Still don't go thinking that this is enough for me to accept you have reached a decent level of skill. You WILL reach at least the three star A standard before you leave my tutelage." Olivander said sternly and Nick could only shrug in acceptance. The old man wasn't joking either as he cracked down on every little flaw in the wands Nick made the entire last week of July even when the school shopping list came in.-
Nick had already expected it but seeing that the majority of the list consisted of Lockhart's works irritated him to no end. Rather than spend thirty five galleons on the books he simply purchased six sets of the books from the system and sent five of them to the Weasleys who definitely couldn't afford that outrageous price. For a poor family like them one hundred and seventy five galleons was enough to almost bankrupt them. Besides Nick wanted to make amends with them for lying to them when he had visited.-
While he was sure that they could understand why he did it it didn't change the fact that he had deceived them to get what he was after which definitely hurt a bit. Harry was far more complicated to deal with as he didn't care about wealth or anything like that but he very much had cared that Nick had kept something like that from him. Still Olivander much like usual was right in that the first week of august had first years coming in droves. "You see when a wand is held by a wizard or witch who they don't acknowledge there is various ways it can make this known."
"For example in your case the wands either went lifeless and nonresponsive in your hand or turned violent from the rejection. Of course we were able to avoid the later occurrence most of the time due to your sensitivity to the wands." Olivander explained as Nick measured a first year who looked very weird out to get dealt with by a student only a year older than them. The first years mother clearly shared this concern but Nick merely smiled and showed them his license "No need to worry , I'm a professional." he said confidently.-
This show of authenticity let them relax considerably and Nick could only glare at Helena who was snickering to herself in the corner while pampering Steve who Nick could swear had gained weight. At least Dusk had Nicks back or in this case shoulder in his full large rooster sized glory. Nick almost wanted to burn his license by the end of the week though as he long since lost track of how many times he had said that line while showing his credentials. Things got awkward on saturday however when the Weasleys entered the shop to get Ginny Weasley the only daughter of the family her wand.
