Chapter 385: Unexpected guest

After his bath Nick got dressed in his pajamas before heading for the manors dining room to eat dinner. It was a simple meal of vegetable beef stew but in such a large quantity that it could be mistaken as a party sized portion. Sadly it was not as Nick and Steve were the ones eating it entirely. Nazguls dinner on the other hand involved a large portion of Colo-colo souls and all. Much like the acromantulas though there were so many on the island that she barely dented their numbers.-

Dusk meanwhile was eating off of a platter stacked high with barbequed meat while in his tiny fuzzball form since he finally underwent rebirth to regrow his tail feather. The one he had lost because of Peeves had been in Nicks possession since that day but he was saving it for a special purpose. To be specific Nick was planning to create a very powerful wand out of it but hadn't had the time to devote to veritology until now to really improve his mastery of the subject. At best his wood and rune carving skills had improved greatly but the subject was more than just those two facets.-

It involved a clear understanding of how the wand core and wood would interact as well as the various quirks of both. The ironic part was that veritology only became a real craft when a wand maker a long long time ago realized that sticks with runes on them weren't the most efficient way to create a magical focus. The exact history of how wands came to take the forms they had today was long and mostly vague or entirely lost to time. What Nick did know though was that the craft had been refined by generation after generation of crafters into what it was now.-

For example Nick knew for certain that over a thousand years ago during the founders time wands were created out of whatever magical components someone brought to a wand maker. The wood used for them was roughly the same as today but the cores were strange and sometimes didn't even work. Crazy magical things like mandrake leaves , the heart of their most loyal hound and other morbid or just odd things. From what Nick understood though the item was required to be obtained by the wands owner personally. This led to a mass of hunting magical beasts to get their powerful parts in order to create a more powerful wand.-

Interestingly enough though the act of hunting ones own wand core material actually did create a stronger bond between owner and wand. The problem came in the form of compatibility between the core and the wizard. Olivander solved this problem by introducing the supreme core theory when he was much younger. This let everyone have a equally powerful wand that was perfectly compatible with them at the cost of the extra power granted by hunting a core themselves.-

Sadly there was a very large problem with wands in general that anyone paying attention to history could spot. After they were introduced it suddenly became much harder to grow very powerful and the average level of power amongst the magical community dropped sharply. The reason for this was that the wielders of the wands stopped remembering that the wands were tools to help them cast magic not the source of the magic. A wizard stripped of their wand suddenly found themselves at the mercy of their enemy and thus little better than a muggle.-

Slowly the mastery of magic itself that the ancient wizards had faded until mere wisps of it remained in the ancient tombs scattered around the world. 'But none of that is my business at the moment.' Nick thought after finishing his meal and heading up to his room to sleep. As a vampire Lucas didn't actually need to sleep so a single light in the manor remained on for the rest of the night. Nick was alerted by the ward to the island that someone had entered the island without permission slightly before dawn which woke him up. 'Was it dumb luck or did someone actually manage to track me down somehow?' he thought as he got dressed and rushed out of the room in a rush.-

"We have an unexpected visitor , prepare for combat!" Nick said seriously before Lucas could even say good morning. Lucas immediately pulled out his own wand from before he became a vampire with a serious expression before following Nick. They quickly made their way out of the manor and Nick commanded the atronachs patrolling the outskirts of the manor to follow them closely. "RAAAAAAAWW!" A loud roar came from the northern part of the island that Nick recognized as belonging to Seram and they hurried over that way.
