Evander sat stiffly on the couch, watching Olivine as she held a glass of water and used a spoon to feed Valerie mouthfuls of water.

The older woman gazed at Olivine affectionately and said, “You've stayed with me at the hospital for so long. You should go home and get some rest. I'll be fine with Evander here."’

“All right. I'll take my leave, then.”

Reading the room, Olivine got up from the chair without fuss, grabbed her bag. and exited the ward.

However, she did not go far. Instead, she hid in a comer where she would not be discovered and eavesdropped on the conversation inside the ward.

A long silence ensued inside the room after she left.

In the end. Evander was the first to break the awkward atmosphere. He said in a low voice, “I'll arrange for the help to come here and take care of you for the time being. Just let me know if there's anything you need.”

“There's no need for that,” Valerie replied with a cold snort. “Although I have one foot in the grave, I'm still not at the point where I need someone with me all the time.”

Evander furrowed his brows. There was a hint of annoyance in his tone as he responded, “If you insist on saying such tilings, I won't come and visit you anymore.”

He stuck both hands in his pockets and made to leave.

Knowing he was as stubborn as a mule, Valerie could not help but sigh heavily.

“That's enough. Everyone outside is staring at us, wondering what we're arguing about. Do you genuinely think I'm pushing you to many Olivine as soon as possible merely as a precaution against Angeline?”

Looking grave, Evander made no response.

As Valerie shifted her gaze to look out the window, a ray of warm morning sun fell upon the side of her face, making her look kinder and gentler.

“Julius is no easy opponent. Always overlooked because of his family background, he harbors resentment in liis heart. The only thing is Julius can't do much because of liis age. so he rests all of liis hopes on that son of his. He appeared indifferent to the affairs around him for many years. Behind closed doors, however, he's been poaching Golding Group's connections.”

She became so upset that she clutched at her chest and coughed violently.

Evander quickly reached for the glass of water on the bedside table and held it in front of her so she could drink out of it.

Nonetheless, there was no shift in liis expression as he did so. He said quietly, “Grandma, you've grossly underestimated me.”

If I was someone who'd step down from my position in the company because of these old geezers' tactics, there's no way I would've stayed for so long in the first place.

Valerie shook her head and sighed heavily again.

“They won't give in just like that. If they can't get to you, they'll pressure me to relinquish my shares. When your grandfather entrusted the family to me before he passed, he reminded me that a

harmonious family will always prosper. Do you truly want to force our family into internal strife and make us a laughingstock to others?”

Evander pressed his thin lips together tightly, no longer able to maintain a cahn expression on liis handsome face. His gaze also clouded over.

Based on his perspective on the matter, he had liis way of dealing with those wily old foxes.

However, if he looked at it from her perspective, it did seem rather unfair to her.

In any case, he knew that as long as it was a matter that involved the family's interests, they would insist on a fair and just solution.

“Evander, I know you have reservations and won't follow in your father's footsteps. However, as a descendant of the Golding family, you can't let your heart rule your head.” Valerie gripped his arm. “That's enough.” Evander uttered, cutting her off in a low voice. At the mention of Angeline. a hint of agitation broke through the icy look on liis face.

“The wedding will proceed as scheduled.” His expression darkened, and liis tone became somber.

Aside from the fact that Angeline will never agree to be my mistress, even I think that doing so is sullying her. However, seeing how Grandma is so troubled that she even goes so far as to bring up Grandpa, I've no way of getting out of this. She was absorbed in her happiness and did not pause to consider Evander's feelings. He looked as though he was shrouded in a cloud of darkness.

His body started trembling subconsciously, and he massaged his temples with liis long, slender fingers. There was also a bitter look in his eyes.

At that moment, the only image running through liis mind was that of Angeline's face.

If she sees this after she regains consciousness, she'll surely be deeply disappointed with me. Also, how should I face her and Floretta in the future?

Outside the ward, a look of delight spread across Olivine's face when she heard Evander agree to proceed with the wedding. Even her fingers gripping her backpack's straps were trembling from her excitement.
