Chapter 407: 407: The Holy Land, Do Not Enter
Without Invitation
Upon hearing “the book detailing all herb locations in the game,” Song Jian paused and couldn’t help but ask, “There’s a book like that?”
“Of course! This is the city’s largest library,” Zhu Hao proudly exclaimed. “From then on, I’d come here every day to try my luck. It’s a pity though, I’ve never had another chance to enter ever since that one time.”
“That is indeed a pity,” Song Jian replied with a slight smile and began walking towards the steps.
Ordinary people would probably be panting by the time they reached the library entrance at the end of these dozen steps. However, those who could stand here were elite professionals above level 10. Their physical stamina was robust, so such exertion was nothing for them.
By the time Song Jian arrived at the library entrance, it was filled with people, including not just players but also numerous NPC professionals. They all stood quietly in their places, waiting silently.
“Can’t we just go in?” Song Jian asked quietly.
“Unless you can defeat the two guards at the entrance,” Zhu Hao murmured.
The guards standing at the library’s entrance were slightly different from those at other places. Their armour was more ornate, with purple magical patterns even painted on them. The aura they emitted was also more threatening than their peers. Even though the area in front of the library entrance was filled with people, nobody dared to approach them.
Moreover, the levels of these two guards were not revealed. Their danger level was indicated only by two blood-red skull icons.
“Don’t worry, a lucky person will randomly be chosen from everyone in ten minutes,” Zhu Hao muttered, thinking Song Jian was getting impatient.
However, what Song Jian was pondering at that moment was whether he could directly enter the library, as he was trusted with a mission given by Cecilia
Priest.
Just as Song Jian was hesitating, the library doors opened from the inside. A serious-faced young girl emerged from within.
The young girl looked to be about eighteen or nineteen years old. She had chestnut-red hair, and her eyes shimmered with a deep blue reminiscent of the sea. Her delicate face was as exquisite as fine porcelain, inviting the urge to reach out and touch it. However, the girl’s expression held people back.
As the girl emerged, almost everyone respectfully bowed to her. After all, she held the privilege of determining who could enter the library that day.
She stood at the library entrance and scanned the crowd. “Kulatu, come in,” she said in a deep voice.
With that, the girl turned and walked back into the library, her figure quickly disappearing within the entrance. She seemed to know the name of everyone present. After scanning the crowd, she randomly called out one name and left, not caring about anyone else’s reaction.
Cheers of joy and countless complaints resounded simultaneously.
An NPC professional strode towards the library entrance. The two guards on either side made no move to stop him, and he soon disappeared inside the door.
“What the hell, this is the third time in a row that an NPC was selected!”
“Yeah, I come here every day, but I’ve never been chosen. Is my luck really that bad?”
“It should be a player’s turn now, right? You can’t discriminate like that!
“It would be better to choose two people at a time, one NPC and one player. Wouldn’t that be fairer?”
Weary complaints came from all around, and the crowd began to dissipate. The players were grumbling, and while the NPC professionals didn’t speak, their expressions were full of disappointment.
“Let’s go, bro. We can only try again tomorrow,” Zhu Hao sighed, addressing
Song Jian.
“I want to try again,” Song Jian replied with a slight smile, walking towards the door.
“Oh no, hold on, dude. Some people have done the same as you, trying to incite the library to increase the quota. They all got slashed by the guards,” Zhu Hao cried out in alarm. He tried to stop Song Jian but hesitated upon glancing at the guards.
Seeing Song Jian advancing towards the library door, some players couldn t help but stop and watch with mocking expressions on their faces.
“Hey, someone dares to challenge again!”
“Has the lesson from last time not been enough or is this guy overestimating himself? Or perhaps he thinks the guards’ swords are blunt?”
“Let me see the guards draw their swords again. The last time I watched, I felt like I was on the brink of realization…”
Almost every day, these gamers would come here to try their luck. Some had been coming for over a month without ever being selected. Their pent-up resentment exploded upon seeing someone approach; everyone-with their mocking smiles-prepared to watch the guards slash this player away.
The library doors hadn’t closed yet, and seeing Song Jian approach, the guards’ eyes squinted, and a chilling intent radiated from them.
It felt as though Song Jian was walking on a battlefield strewn with dead bodies. Anyone with weaker willpower would likely have been scared away by now.
“Stop!” The guard on the left placed his long sword in front of him to block Song Jian, growling, “Intruders with no qualification to access the Holy Landdeath awaits!”
“I am Song Jian. Cecilia Priest sent me to find Dr. Kang Lin,” Song Jian replied with a slight frown.
“Dr. Kang Lin?” The blocking guard hesitated, his eyes flickering. After a moment, he put away his sword, glanced at his companion, who nodded in agreement.
“Wait here. Don’t wander off.” With that, the guard turned and went into the library.
After a short while, the guard returned from the library. His attitude was far more respectful. “Dr. Kang Lin is in the library. You can go in by yourself.”
Song Jian exhaled in relief and nodded, walking towards the library. Behind him, Zhu Hao stood speechless on the library steps, his mouth agape in disbelief, frozen as if turned to stone.
Song Jian stepped into the library, the interior seemed to transport him into another world where everything was even more grand and expansive than what he had seen outside.
Song Jian remembered only having seen such a magnificent sight before at the Apocalypse Supermarket.
The library was filled with rows upon rows of documents. In the centre, there was a huge sphere emitting a gentle light. Many people surrounded it, seemingly checking something.
Looking at all the books around him, Song Jian couldn’t help but murmur to himself, “There must be more than a hundred thousand books here, right?” The exact number is 1,975,463 volumes,” a gentle voice sounded from the side.
When Song Jian turned his head, he saw a friendly-looking man with long hair smiling back at him.
