Chapter 572: Chapter 572: Self-confidence
In front of Song Jian was a noble lady who looked to be in her thirties. Every smile and frown exuded warmth and generosity, her dignified beauty radiating a kind and benevolent aura.
Her gaze towards Anna was filled with affection. She reached out and held Anna’s hand, bringing her to her side.
After glancing at Song Jian, Onika whispered something in Anna’s ear; Anna immediately blushed and began shaking her head as if explaining something, not daring to gaze in Song Jian’s direction.
Onika chuckled softly, turned to Song Jian and said, “Looking at you, I wouldn’t have guessed you possessed the skill to save the city master. However, you chosen ones of God are all quite mysterious, appearing and disappearing without a trace, always capable of producing miracles. I have high hopes for you.”
Song Jian bowed respectfully to Onika without uttering a word.
In reality, when Song Jian first saw Onika, his instincts were screaming alarms in warning. This woman held a presence not weaker than Shadow Giant Dragon. If not for Song Jian’s composure, he might already be drenched in sweat, shaken to his core.
“This strong scent of blood is as if I am standing before an endless sea of blood…” Song Jian thought to himself. Though his face remained expressionless, the clenched fist in his sleeve betrayed his inner thoughts.
“Song Jian, this is the city master’s wife and my aunt, Lady Onika!” Anna introduced.
“Greetings, respected Lady Onika!” Song Jian bowed to Onika. As he heard she was the city master’s wife, the puzzle in his mind clicked, connecting all the clues.
“Perhaps, the reason for the city master’s unconsciousness lies right in front of me!” Song Jian thought. He became even more humble, wishing he could become invisible to avoid Onika’s attention.
However, Onika’s gaze remained on Song Jian. Her face wore a kind smile, but her eyes held a discerning light.
“You’re a good lad. Keep it up! Anna is the young princess of the City of Sin…” Onika jokingly insinuated.
“Aunt…” Blushing intensely, Anna promptly tugged at Onika’s hand to halt her amused teasing.
“Enough joking now. You should go check on Kayne. Oh God, why did you have to let this disease torment Kayne? I would rather bear this pain for him…” Onika’s face fell, showing a hint of sorrow.
“Aunt, everything will get better,” Anna quietly comforted.
Song Jian stood to one side, remaining as still and silent as if he were a wooden statue; even his movements were minimal.
After chatting with Onika for a while, Anna led Song Jian towards the master’s chamber where Kayne was recovering.
Onika’s gaze was still focused on Song Jian’s back. She could see through Song Jian’s abilities: just a man who had not even reached the first Combat Power level. Such a person could not possibly dispel the poison she had unleashed.
Even though the chosen ones of God had become the city’s laughingstock, Onika still wanted to judge him with her own eyes, to prevent any unwelcome surprises.
“Another pitiful fool, huh!” A cold smile surfaced on Onika’s face. With a harsh rub of her fingers, she ground a flower into dust.
Song Jian followed Anna through the City Lord Mansion, where armed soldiers in armor were visible everywhere.
“These are my uncle’s guards, loyal to him alone. Since my uncle’s sickness, they have been stationed here in the City Lord Mansion to protect him,” Anna whispered.
Song Jian nodded in understanding. If not for these loyal soldiers, the city master might have died long ago.
“In a moment, you will meet Sir Suravi. He leads the mansion guards and is my uncle’s most trusted man. He has been by my uncle’s side this whole time, so you must be extra respectful to him,” Anna reminded.
Song Jian nodded in understanding, suspecting that this Suravi likely possessed strength comparable to Lady Onika’s.
“I never thought that so much power would be concentrated around one city master!” Song Jian mused, “But one day, my territory will spread across the entire Doomsday City, and by then, I will be a true city master!”
The area of Doomsday City is similar to that of the City of Sin. However, one is a city in ruins, while the other is bustling with prosperity. Comparisons between the two are futile.
But if Song Jian could truly expand his territory to encompass an entire city, perhaps there would indeed be an opportunity for him to compete with the City of Sin.
Song Jian, following Anna, arrived at a three-story house. It was unremarkable from the outside, but Song Jian could sense that within a hundred meters of this house, heavy guards were stationed.
The aura emanating from these soldiers – each seasoned and hardened from countless battles – ensured this place was impervious to intrusion, not even a mosquito could sneak in.
After a thorough search, Song Jian and Anna were led to the city master’s sickbed. A middle-aged man in a gray robe stands nearby, casting a weary glance at Anna and Song Jian.
“Miss, you have come to visit the master again!” Suravi faintly smiled, nodding towards Anna.
“Sir Suravi, good day!” Anna curtsied to Suravi, saying, “This is Song Jian. Although he is a chosen one of God, he possesses an artifact capable of curing my uncle’s illness!”
Suravi didn’t even glance at Song Jian as he shook his head, “Miss, the city master is not sick, he’s been poisoned. The poison he’s afflicted with is highly lethal, even I can’t completely eliminate it. I can only slow it down, but recently, the poison has shown signs of spreading. I’ve already dispatched soldiers to the City of Hymns to purchase sufficient life potions…”
“Sir Suravi, I understand my uncle is poisoned. Yet, I believe the artifact Song Jian has can heal him fully!” Anna interrupted Suravi, her voice filled with confidence as she nodded towards Song Jian.
