Chapter 139: Storing Food
In S City, Qiu Tong summoned a few mercenaries to accompany her to the market to purchase a large amount of food and daily necessities.
The locust plague affected the prices of grain and other necessities. All the signboards outside the shops in the market indicated a 20% increase in price. Qiu Tong entered and asked the boss to bring out his grain. After carefully checking that there were no problems with the grain, she paid without any hesitation.
When the surrounding customers saw Qiu Tong hoarding food, they couldn’t help asking, “Why are you buying so much food?”
“The locust plague is already under control. There’s enough food supply now.”
Qiu Tong smiled politely and gestured at the mercenaries to move the food back. She did not explain further.
As she had once lived in the post-apocalyptic era, Qiu Tong was extremely sensitive to danger. No matter what the situation, she always wanted to stock up on food and daily necessities, to guard against special situations which could happen any time. Furthermore, the locust plague in S City had just passed and the city was still in a fragile state.
Qiu Tong had four children to take care of and she needed to be fully prepared.
The mercenaries carried the bags of food to the car. Qiu Tong’s purchase attracted a crowd.
When Shu Yuanwei heard about it, he also rushed over to check on the situation.
He realized that Qiu Tong was actually willing to pay a high price to buy some old grain. Shu Yuanwei couldn’t help putting his hands on his hips and sneering. “You’re really crazy.”
“The government will definitely give you a monetary reward for helping to exterminate the locusts, right? Why do you have to buy so much food?”
Shu Yuanwei looked at Qiu Tong contemptuously, mocking her stupidity. He reminded her in a sharp tone, “In another week, the fields will be ready for harvest. By then, the price of grain will decrease and there will be a lot of fresh grain sent to the market. Why don’t you keep the money…”
“Don’t tell me you prefer stale grain? I did hear of some people who don’t enjoy fresh food.”
Shu Yuanwei watched as Qiu Tong ignored him and left with her food. He spat on the ground. “Pui!”
“Despicable fellow, she deserves to have her money wasted!”
Shu Yuanwei was so angry that his face turned pallid. He cursed a few times in the street before returning to his own shop.
On the way back to the villa, Qiu Tong and the mercenaries discovered that there were many refugees fleeing from other cities and countryside.
They occupied public places like parks and beside the ATM machines.
Qiu Tong frowned and asked softly, “When did this situation start to happen?”
The mercenary thought carefully and looked around warily before replying, “I think sometime in the past two weeks.”
“In the beginning, only a small number of refugees moved to the center of S City. But now, nearly every part of the city has refugees gathered.”
The mercenaries had never seen such a situation before. Their tone was somewhat solemn.
The more Qiu Tong heard, the more uneasy she felt. She knew that other cities would not be as lucky as S City to be able to use a helicopter to spray locust pesticide to control the situation.
If they missed the optimal locust extermination time, the locusts in the fields would easily go out of control and consume the grains before harvest.
Faced with such a situation, those farmers who relied on selling food for a living had no choice but to flee their homes and beg on the streets…
Qiu Tong had experienced riots caused by a lack of food in the post-apocalyptic era. She immediately sped up and urged the mercenaries, “Hurry.”
“Let’s hurry back.”
