Xia Xin found herself safely landing in a broad embrace. Groggy and caught between sleep and wakefulness, she only managed to catch a glimpse of Jing Mo’s beautifully sculpted jawline. Then he lowered his head, his eyes filled with a rage she couldn’t comprehend. He seemed to be saying something, but Xia Xin couldn’t hear him; she fell into a drowsy stupor.
Ignoring the stares of onlookers, Jing MO scooped Xia Xin up in his arms and swiftly left the film set. He drove Sun Hu’s car, taking her straight home.
If Jing MO didn’t know that Xia Xin faints every time she’s in danger, he’d be worried that she suffers from anemia or some other condition causing her frequent fainting spells.
Suppressing his urge to take Xia Xin to the hospital, Jing MO took her home. He had just placed her on the bed and pulled the covers over her when their dogs, Bobo and Layle, rushed in, gathering around Xia Xin with worried expressions.
Guessing that the two dogs were concerned for Xia Xin’s safety, Jing MO assured them, “Don’t worry. She’s just sleeping; don’t disturb her.” before leaving the room with the dogs.
No sooner had Jing MO closed the door than Xia Xin slowly stirred awake. She called out Jing Mo’s name in a weak voice, thinking he wouldn’t hear her through the door. But he promptly re-entered, asking, “You’re awake?”
The dogs also cautiously approached the bed, careful not to harm Xia Xin.
Recognizing her surroundings—a familiar monochrome of black, white, and gray—Xia Xin thanked Layle with a pat on the head and queried, “Why did you bring me home?”
Jing MO scowled and thought, ‘You’ve just had a brush with death, and you’re asking why you’re home?’
Annoyed, Jing MO said, “Do you have any idea how dire the situation was? If I hadn’t caught you in time, you could have fallen into the pool and possibly drowned!”
Startled, Xia Xin felt her heart rate spike. It wasn’t her first brush with death, but the terror had not diminished. Finally regaining her composure, she murmured, “Jing MO, thank you.”
Jing Mo’s expression softened slightly. He asked, “What happened today? Why did you faint so suddenly?”
Xia Xin decided to tell Jing MO a half-truth, “I’m terrified of water. I think it was a stress response that made me pass out.”
Xia Xin’s voice faded as she spoke, wary of another scolding. Quickly changing the subject, she asked, “Why were you at the set today?”
Unamused, Jing MO replied, “I came to find you.”
“Find me?” Xia Xin chuckled. “You don’t think I’m a child who needs supervision everywhere, do you? I’ve had experience filming; I can manage myself on set. You don’t have to worry about me.”
“You’re sure about that? Look at what happened today…” said Jing Mo.
Before Jing MO could lecture Xia Xin again, she interrupted, “See? Everything’s fine. I promise it won’t happen again!”
Xia Xin even raised her right hand in a pledge.
Jing MO finally relented. After a moment’s silence, he inquired, “What’s going on between you and MO Shu?”
“We’re just acting.” Xia Xin replied.
“You both trended on social media again,” Jing MO said.
Stunned, Xia Xin realized she hadn’t checked her phone all day. Looking around, she discovered her phone was still on the set. She asked, “May I borrow your phone to check?”
Jing MO unlocked his phone, still on the page displaying their trending topic, and handed it to Xia Xin with a frown. After scanning the page, Xia Xin exclaimed, “These media outlets really know how to make stuff up! It’s just a gift, there’s nothing suggestive about it!”
As Xia Xin spoke, she looked up to find Jing Mo’s dark expression and immediately closed her mouth. Then she caught herself wondering why she was feeling guilty.
Smiling in a manner one uses to placate children, Xia Xin explained, “It’s not what it looks like. I was just running an errand and accidentally fell into the water.”
After recounting the entire incident, Jing Mo t s eyes softened slightly. Then he suddenly asked, “What did MO Shu do after you choked on the water in the pool?”
“He patted my back to help me cough up the water. I only choked a little; it was nothing serious..”
