Chapter 341: To Experience Loss, Becoming A Night Worker
Chapter 341: To Experience Loss, Becoming A Night Worker
...….
"To experience loss, one must first have something. I lost my freedom, and now my freedom has returned. I understand…"
Under the presence of the large, dazzling immortal moon, Azmodeus vanished from his spot, leaving blades of grass to flutter into the wind.
Within a few moments, his fleeting figure was seen dancing among the grassy fields surrounding the Everveil Kingdom from all sides. Observing the scenery around him, he caught a glimpse of the kingdom during the moonlit hour. Reflecting its rays off the sides of the city buildings, the moon acted as the ambiance that told a tale depicting night workers' lives.
Not just the selling their body for money type, but the kind of night workers that constructed structures and maintained the facilities that made the city function properly.
They were the true backbone of the kingdom. Though the ones fighting for their kingdom or ruling over the kingdom from above also had their parts to play, the ones who went unnoticed were more vital to the continuation of the kingdom's economy for many generations to come.
It was people like this that Azmodeus decided to approach, and he did so with an offer in mind. Of course, before he reached a group of them, he activated his Heavenly Transfiguration Technique and changed every aspect of his existence.
From his face to his aura and outfit — everything might as well have been considered indistinguishable from his previous self. And to any onlookers, no matter their strength, he would appear like your typical middle-aged nightworker.
His cultivation being in the Grade 9 Half-Immortal Realm was just the cherry on top. Thus, with an impeccable disguise and identity, Azmodeus walked up to a group of men and women wearing yellow construction hats. Similar to modern earthlings, they wore your typical construction getup. The evidence of their hard, dangerous work could be seen in the form of tears and mysterious stains on their attire.
"???" "???"
Upon hearing unfamiliar footsteps, all of the construction workers suddenly looked in the same direction. Getting a good look at who the footsteps belonged to, a large square-faced construction man stepped forth. "And what business do you have with us?" He asked in a gruff tone.
"..."
Taking a moment to appraise the appearance and demeanor of this construction man, Azmodeus's rather soothing voice started out by saying, "I have just arrived in town. As I come from a mining city to the east, I am familiar with hard work.
Therefore, I will keep things simple in saying that I wish to find some work." Extending his large hand for a handshake, it took a second of brooding for the construction man to stretch out his hand as well. Though his hand was quite a bit larger than Azmodeus's, their grips were roughly the same in strength, and that was all the construction manager needed to know. "You have yourself a job!
From dusk till dawn, for 7 days a week, are you really up for it?"
"Yes, I am." Azmodeus's response was instantaneous.
It was this resolve that led to a smile forming on the rough faces of everyone in the construction crew. After quickly becoming acquainted, Azmodeus was told to stay in their on-premises trailers until he found a place to stay. Upon which, Azmodeus replied in a positive manner and swiftly found himself a bed to sleep on.
Waiting for dawn to arrive, he pretended to sleep while thinking over his most recent actions.
'In the end, the only choice I had was something along the lines of what I've done. From what I occasionally heard from outside the prison cell with my enhanced hearing, this kingdom is one where you can really only enter and never leave. Even Human Immortal Realm Cultivators are said to be stuck here until they could afford the cost of migration.
Which, from what I gathered, is a price tag beyond anything a normal person could hope to amass.'
'With all of this in mind, and with the addition of a few more whispers from around the city, I was able to learn of the best course of action I could take. That is, unless I wanted to take the risk and encounter the Earth Immortal Realm Border Guards at the nation's border.'
'If they had even the smallest chance of catching me and learning of my 'relationship' with the eldest princess of their kingdom… well, I doubt even 7 cat lives would be enough to save me…'
The only thing that Azmodeus could think of in order to counter everything that could potentially be after his head or freedom was the sequence of events before him. Taking up a job while in disguise and having that job be one entirely focused on the night schedule. With this, he could work during the night while attempting to snoop around for an Immortal Cultivation Technique.
Whereas during the day, he would continue to refine his body under the guise of 'resting'.
Rinsing and repeating this process while keeping his head low, more than half a year quickly flew by…
On a day just like all the ones that came before, Azmodeus worked with his construction crew to sketch out and build magically powered structures. Using Immortal Energy as their power source, they came with all-inclusive electricity. Plus, they were already furnished and intricately detailed by the time Azmodeus and 'his' crew were done with them.
It didn't used to be like this, but after the 'Super Newbie' joined the crew, everything started to change for a particular branch of the 'Everveil Immortal Construction Company'. Instead of doing exactly as their outside superiors told them to do, Azmodeus switched things up and threw out some bones, hoping that someone would catch them.
Because of this and a headstrong attitude that the construction company had never seen, the superiors began to take him up on some of his proposals. And it was after some trial and error that they realized just how much of a construction genius the Super Newbie was. So, without giving it a second thought, the company let him take over the reins of construction spanning multiple city blocks!
In less than 3 months of working as the Manager of his Construction Team, Azmodeus showed his immense worth to the company. Therefore, it was today that they called him over to the head office, planning to offer him a position as ''General Manager' of District 1-A0689'.
Though it was only control over one of the countless districts in the massive Everveil Kingdom, it was definitely a major step forward. Hence, it was no surprise that he accepted their offer and started working on a larger scale the very next day.
During the last half year, the Royal Castle's powerful guardsmen began patrolling the capital with an unnatural amount of agitation. It were these peculiarities that let Azmodeus know that he needed to speed things up, lest the guards get a little too close to his scent.
It was beyond obvious that the Eldest Princess was infuriated over the escape of her 'helpless toy'. As she sent out her father's men in order to find him, it was pretty clear that she was trying to cover up for her own negligence. Growing complacent with her own power and status, she practically refused to imagine a scenario where one of her 'toys' escaped.
Thus, she left no security around her toys and didn't so much as have any of her spies keep a watch on them.
In the end, her lack of vigilance was her mistake. And it would also serve as the cause of her undoing…
