Chapter 438: The Veil of Betrayal

Chapter 438: The Veil of Betrayal

"This is your end," Azmodeus said simply.

With one final swing, he unleashed a wave of energy that swept across the battlefield, annihilating the remaining forces in an instant. The ground quaked, the air burned, and when the light finally faded, nothing remained of the Nine Evil Yin army but ash.

High above, a single figure observed the carnage with narrowed eyes. The faint laughter of the Nine Evil Yin Sovereign's secret spy, Ling Chao, echoed across the battlefield, filled with equal parts amusement and menace.

"Impressive, Azmodeus," the voice said, its tone cold. "But this is far from over. Enjoy your victory while you can."

Azmodeus lowered the cleaver, his expression unchanging. "Why don't you fight me now?" he asked softly, a faint grin crossing his lips. "I could use another punching bag."

"...Brother… Why are you…?"

Ming Chao suddenly entered the scene, her shock over witnessing Azmodeus's immense power quickly being replaced with utter dread. She could sense it, as if on instinct—her brother was not being controlled. But why!? Why was he doing this!??

The battlefield lay in ruins. Smoke rose in thin tendrils from the scorched earth, the once-vast armies of the Nine Evil Yin reduced to ash and echoes of their screams. The sky, darkened by the cataclysmic clash, seemed to mourn the devastation below, its ominous clouds swirling like a tempest on the verge of unleashing more chaos.

Azmodeus stood at the heart of it all, the Grand Pandemonium Cleaver resting on the ground beside him. Its edge gleamed faintly, as though it thirsted for more destruction. His calm demeanor contrasted sharply with the devastation around him, his faint grin almost mocking the solemn silence that had fallen over the battlefield.

High above, Ling Chao's laughter faded, leaving only an eerie stillness. His presence, though intangible, weighed heavily on those below. Ming Chao, hovering in the air, struggled to suppress the storm of emotions raging within her. Her brother—the one she had looked up to for centuries—was truly aligned with the Nine Evil Yin. The signs were unmistakable now, and no amount of rationalization could deny the truth.

"Brother!" Ming Chao's voice rang out, cutting through the silence. Her tone was a mix of desperation and determination, as though clinging to the last thread of hope. "Why!? Why are you doing this? Why have you betrayed us?"

The figure in purple robes—Ming Chao's brother, Ling Chao—turned to face her. His expression remained cold, his deadened eyes devoid of any warmth or remorse. "Betrayed?" he echoed, his voice calm yet laced with derision. "Do you truly believe I owe loyalty to the Eternal Jade Heaven? To a realm that stagnates in its arrogance and delusions of supremacy?"

Ming Chao's heart sank at his words, her fingers tightening around her sword hilt. "You can't mean that," she said, her voice trembling. "We built this realm together! We swore to protect it, to nurture it into the strongest Immortal Realm! What could possibly make you abandon everything we fought for?"

Ling Chao chuckled, a hollow sound that sent shivers down her spine. "You still don't understand, do you? The Eternal Jade Heaven is a relic—a crumbling empire propped up by fools who cling to outdated ideals. The Nine Evil Yin offered me power, freedom, and the chance to stand above the petty squabbles of these so-called Immortal Realms. We are going to ascend further into the Immortal Funnel together! Why would I refuse?"

"You're lying!" Ming Chao snapped, her voice rising with anger. "This isn't you, Brother! The Ling Chao I know would never sell his soul to monsters like them! You're being manipulated—I know it!"

Ling Chao's eyes narrowed, his expression darkening. "Do not presume to know me, Ming Chao. The path I walk is one of my own choosing. You, with your blind devotion to the Eternal Jade, will never understand."

Before Ming Chao could respond, Azmodeus stepped forward, his imposing presence drawing all eyes to him. His faint grin had widened into a chilling smirk, his icy gaze fixed on Ling Chao.

"Are you done?" Azmodeus asked casually, his tone carrying a dangerous edge. "Because frankly, this whole family drama is starting to bore me."

Ming Chao shot him a glare, her frustration bubbling over. "Azmodeus, this is none of your—"

"Wrong," Azmodeus interrupted, his voice cutting through hers like a blade. "This has everything to do with me. Your brother there just declared himself my enemy, and I don't take kindly to enemies."

Ling Chao raised an eyebrow, a flicker of interest crossing his otherwise stoic face. "And what do you intend to do about it, Azmodeus? You may have bested the pawns of the Nine Evil Yin, but do you truly believe you can stand against me? What you know of my power is just what I have been willing to show. What I have gained after joining the Nine Evil Yin Realm is something you cannot possibly fathom. And for killing our Lord Sovereign's Eldest Son, your only fate is destined death. This cannot be altered."

Azmodeus chuckled, a low, menacing sound that sent a ripple of unease through the remaining cultivators. "Oh, I don't just believe it," he said, his grip tightening on the Grand Pandemonium Cleaver. "I know it."

The air grew tense as the two powerhouses locked eyes. Ling Chao's aura surged, far surpassing the initial levels of the Immortal Transcendence Realm. His Transcendent Spark burst out in immense power, and a dark, oppressive energy emanated from his form. It was the power of a Transcendent who had fully embraced the Nine Evil Yin's twisted doctrines, and it bore down on the battlefield like an unrelenting storm.

Azmodeus, however, remained unfazed. If anything, he seemed invigorated by the challenge, his own aura flaring to life in response. Golden light intertwined with streaks of crimson, creating a vortex of energy that clashed with Ling Chao's darkness. The ground trembled under the weight of their power, cracks spidering out in all directions.

Ming Chao hovered between them, her expression torn. She could see the inevitability of the clash, yet her heart ached at the thought of her brother and ally battling to the death.
