Chapter 16 - L’Amour De Ma Vie
Chapter 16 - L’Amour De Ma Vie
There were several contracts and reports that Li Xiuying needed to read and work on, enough to keep her busy from early morning to late at night. She was oblivious to the worried gazes Song Zexi threw on her way as she continued to work nonstop on her first day at work.
When the phone on her desk rang, she was in the middle of cross checking the monthly reports. She picked it up to answer.
"Hello?" Her feminine voice resounded inside her huge and silent office. It betrayed her as her tone was slightly preoccupied.
"Ying, it's Zichen,"
Once she heard who called her, Li Xiuying put her pen down and greeted him cheerfully.
"Oh, it's you, Brother Zichen. This is new. Don't tell me you aren't taking a night shift this time," she laughed.
Shen Zichen, like any other doctor she knew, was a workaholic. She used to tease him that the reason why he was still single was because he was married to his work and couldn't afford to give up spare time for a wife, at the age of thirty two.
"That's true. My parents have just arrived from their overseas trip and called me for a family dinner. You know I can never deny my mother's wishes." He replied with a sigh which made Li Xiuying laugh more.
As always, while Shen Zichen, like his father, could decline anyone asking for a favor with a fierce glare, he couldn't and wouldn't dare to say no to his mother and little sisters.
"Did Sister Yuyan come back with them?" Li Xiuying inquired. She had a good relationship with Shen Zichen's twin sister, Shen Yuyan as they attended the same fine arts school in the capital.
"No, she arrived yesterday. Mom and Dad picked Qingqing up from the airport instead. Are you busy?"
"Hmm, not really."
"You sounded preoccupied just now." Shen Zichen pointed out.
"Ah, I was reading the company data when you called."
At her response, Shen Zichen frowned. He'd already told her to pay attention to her pregnancy or else she might miscarry again. Even if it was that bastard's child, he refused to see Li Xiuying suffer any further.
"Working overtime on your first day? I don't know what to do with you anymore, Li Xiuying. You won't listen to me. Do I need to call Sister Chuntao to chastise you?" He said, his tone a bit brusque.
He heard Li Xiuying gasped at his threat and grinned. He could imagine her making a pout right now. She was still the same Li Xiuying he'd met years ago.
"Fine! I'm done for today! Don't you dare call Chuntao or you'll pay for it!" She threatened back. If Shen Zichen gave her sister a call, she was sure Chuntao would be worried about her.
Song Zexi sighed in relief. It was hard for her and Su Ling to call it a day and go home. They were both grateful that their Miss still had people around her who were truly concerned about her.
"Alright. I'm done with our family dinner. Wait for me. I'll come by and take you to dinner."
"Brother Zichen, you don't have to!"
"Nah, that's fine. Didn't you say you wanted to see my sister? She's here with me right now."
"Ok! I'll wait for the two of you then!" She said enthusiastically. It had been too long since she hung out with her friends and couldn't wait to meet them.
Hanging up the phone, Li Xiuying rubbed her temple with her fingers as she glanced out of the window. The night was beautiful and the bright moon above the sky illuminated the city with its soft light. She decided to send her twin sister a short message, assuring her that she was fine and nothing to be worried about.
"You can wait for me outside while we wait for Brother Zichen. I want to be alone for now." She told her bodyguards who easily yielded to her wish and went out the room in silence.
Finally, it was quiet and nothing can disturb her. She was tired and could feel a headache coming. At the moment, she'd finished half of her work but decided to finish everything the next day before she meets the Head of Department for R&D for consultation.
Li Xiuying thought she would close her eyes for a bit to rest before going out for dinner with the Shen twins, but as soon as she closed her eyes she fell asleep.
Half an hour later, Mu Jianyu strode towards her office and stepped inside even before Song Zexi could stop him from entering. He was greeted by a dimly lit room and with his wife sleeping peacefully on her chair with her head resting on her arms over the desk.
The faint blue light from her computer made her face look delicate and fragile as Mu Jianyu walked closer. She slightly groaned when the faint sound of the door clicking as it closed reached her ears. This wasn't the first time Mu Jianyu saw his wife in this state but it still troubled his heart.
He was supposed to meet Lin Meirong tonight but he canceled it because of the issue with the company. He was careful not to give Li Xiuying a chance to find a trail back to him and decided to stay to overtime.
Mu Jianyu shut down her computer after saving the files she was working on before returning his attention back to her.
"Mon ange…"
Now, as he stared down at his wife, his hand unconsciously reached out and gently brushed her silky black hair over her shoulder away from her face. Once he realized what he'd done, Mu Jianyu pulled his hand away from Li Xiuying and was shocked at what came out from his own lips.
It had been long since he'd called Li Xiuying like this.
'Mon ange. L'amour de ma vie.1'
These were the words he'd told her after she accepted his marriage proposal.
Mu Jianyu wasn't sure why these memories were coming back to him. In his eyes, Li Xiuying was an angel, his angel. He'd fallen in love with her at first sight and yet these past weeks, Lin Meirong filled his dreams and thoughts that he'd already forgotten about his delicate wife.
His thoughts became clouded the more he looked at his wife. No! He cannot allow this! He'd already decided to give up on her for Lin Meirong's sake. Li Xiuying… Ying couldn't give him what he wanted and he refused to pretend he was still happy with their marriage. He was ready to let her go… or was he?
Frustrated that his resolve was starting to crumble the more he looked at her, Mu Jianyu stormed outside her office in blind fury, angry at himself. He walked to the elevator and anxiously pressed the button.
The elevator arrived and opened but before he could make a move to enter, a familiar man stepped out of the elevator and stared at him with disdain. He was wearing a casual attire; a light gray sweater and black trousers with a pair of closed toe shoes.
"Shen Zichen," Mu Jianyu muttered the man's name with irritation.
"Where's Ying?" The man demanded as if he was talking to someone lower than him.
My angel.. The love of my life.
