Chapter 111
Chapter 111
111 Thinking Too Much
“I’m sorry for the words I’ve said to you,” Bai Qi continued. “It was not my intention to drive you away. I didn’t mean that we couldn’t be friends.”
“But that was what you have said,” Zhang Li Xue said. “It was what you considered.”
Bai Qi pursed his lips into a thin line. He remembered what happened and knew how he had hurt her. He did not know what he should say to her this time or how to coax her.
His little sister has always been obedient. Bai Qi was someone who did not have much experience in coaxing someone. He was worried that the more he spoke, the more he was going to upset this little fairy.
If she really decided that they could not be friends, then, what was he supposed to do?
“Miss Zhang, you are a nice person. It would be an honor to be friends with someone like you,” Bai Qi spoke. He hesitated before looking at the girl again. “I know that you did not care about position or background, but I don’t have that confidence to befriend you.”
Zhang Li Xue looked at him without saying anything.
Based on the words that he had said to her previously, Zhang Li Xue knew that Bai Qi was someone who did not have much self-confidence. Therefore, she was not surprised upon hearing his words.
“I worry that by getting closer to you, people might misunderstand that I have some ill intention,” Bai Qi continued. “I already have Doctor Qi as my mentor. If I get close to you as well, people might think that I am trying to climb up the social ladder.”
.....
Zhang Li Xue’s expression changed again. This time, there was a languid smile on her face.
She actually did not care much about what people would say behind her back. When she decided to actively join the basketball team instead of learning music and dancing as the other girls do, there were a lot of people whispering behind her back. They thought that she was too unruly.
However, none of them dared to humiliate her. It was all because of her family and the connection they have.
Moreover, she was someone with a clear conscience. She would not dare to do something that would tarnish her family name.
She believed that her parents and everyone around her had taught her well.
“Doctor Bai, you think too much,” Zhang Li Xue said. “Do you think it would be easy for you to climb up the social ladder just because you befriended me? It is not easy to reach the top unless you are someone capable.”
She might be the eldest child of her parents. However, that does not mean that it was easy for her to obtain anything.
Back when she was still studying, her parents would choose a good school for her and her brother. But even so, the two of them will have to take an exam just like everybody else. Unless they were really qualified, they would not be attending special schools.
While the other kids were enjoying their vacation, Zhang Li Xue and her brother would often work at the hotel, joining the service personnel.
Even if she had shown her interest in being involved in the family’s business, according to her father, if she did not show that she was capable, he would not let her manage it.
To others, she might be the daughter of the Zhang family. But even she had to face some hardships.
This was how her parents were raised and it was how they had raised her and her siblings.
“Since my uncle had chosen you as his student, then, that would mean that he believed in you. Whether we are friends or not, as long as you are good at what you do, my uncle would not mistreat you,” Zhang Li Xue said. She looked at his face for a while and continued, “I see that you are a good person and easy to talk to. What I want is to be friends with you. To have someone who could talk to. Is that too much to ask?”
Bai Qi was stunned upon hearing her words. He realized that Zhang Li Xue was right.
He was indeed thinking too much. So much that it had clouded his judgment.
He should have known that this girl’s thinking was very simple. She genuinely wanted to befriend him. But all he was worried about was how people would view him.
Bai Qi could not help but feel slightly disappointed in himself.
Right now, what the girl was asking for was friendship.
It wasn’t as if she was suggesting that he should marry her.
He really could not understand just what he was so scared about? What was he worrying about?
“Doctor Qi, if you are worried about what people might think of you because you befriended me, then you are right. We are not suitable to be friends.”
“No. I’m not worried,” Bai Qi spoke quickly. He let out a long breath, realizing that he had spoken too quickly. “It’s not like that. Miss Zhang, I would really like to befriend you. I think you are a straightforward person and easy to get along with.”
Zhang Li Xue looked away. She found that Bai Qi’s words were almost like he was trying to flatter her. It was not what she wanted to hear.
“You have been so kind to me and my sister. My sister, Xi Xi liked you a lot. She often asks about you.” Bai Qi paused. He could see that there was a fluctuation in her expression the moment he mentioned his little sister.
He did not know whether he should laugh or be unhappy about it.
In his little fairy’s opinion, his little sister was much more important than him.
“Miss Zhang, are you willing to be friends with me?” Bai Qi asked. Then, he stood at the side, waiting for her answer. Seeing that Zhang Li Xue stayed silent for a long time, Bai Qi decided to tempt her. He lowered his head and spoke in a low voice. “Anyway, we still haven’t continued our basketball match.”
Instantly, Zhang Li Xue looked up.
