Chapter 82: Star Disciples Clash; Yang Wei and Sun Yuying's Confrontation. The Chronicles of the Sect's Number One Super Senior Begins.
The disciples who happened to be at the scene already started whispering to one another.
"What's the problem?!"
"It's Star Disciples Yang and Sun..."
"I think Senior Brother made a move on her."
"Shut your mouth! Our Senior Brother is too chaste for such underhanded tactics!"
"Shhhh! Listen already..."
Yang Wei calmly stepped back and told Sun Yuying, "There's no value in getting angry over something so small."
Sun Yuying stepped forward, glaring with her cold purple eyes, and declared, "You call that casual touch of my body 'menial'? Do you seek death?" she gritted her teeth. It was obvious she hadn't said enough to lift off some of the weight of frustration from her shoulders. "Your antics are disgusting; everything about you is. You lack any shred of self-restraint whatsoever!" she added.
Yang Wei sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, and responded, "Isn't it a bit hypocritical for you to lecture me on self-restraint when you can't even control your temper?"
Instantly, Sun Yuying conjured a dragon sword, gripping the handle tightly as she pointed it at Yang Wei's neck, her expression half-angry and half-irritated.
"Say that again, I dare you..."
"Oh?" Yang Wei raised an eyebrow, briefly impressed. "It seems you've been using my mantra quite well. That's a decent dragon sword..."
"Shut your filthy mouth! You speak rather arrogantly."
Gently shifting the blade away with a hand, Yang Wei sighed and closed his eyes, then said, "Junior Sister, you're a budding flower within the sect. Show due respect to your elders, after all the fate of both the sect and the martial world rests on the shoulders of young talents like yourself." He further provoked her with the self-assured expression on his face.
Opening one eye, he glanced at the disciples nearby, expecting a reaction.
Soon, they started gossiping about Sun Yuying, their whispers audible enough for both to hear.
"Sun Yuying really is despicable."
"Senior Brother would obviously never touch her on purpose. He's too righteous for such a thing."
"It's so disappointing..."
"And she'd even dare call herself the Outer Sect's Star Disciple. What a shame, she can't even respect her senior, especially the Sect's Rising Star."
"Maybe it's because he's a man. How discriminative!"
"She must be jealous because Senior Brother came from nowhere to prove he's better than her and then even secure a spot in the Inner Sect in a matter of months."
Several of these annoying junior disciples' voices seeped into Sun Yuying's breaking mind.
Frustrated, she angrily threw her dragon sword aside, narrowly missing a disciple who dodged in the nick of time. It stabbed into a boulder, splitting it in half and causing it to crumble. "Nonsense," Sun Yuying muttered before storming away, visibly infuriated.
Calmly, Yang Wei pulled out his folding fan, a blue and golden one with "Star Disciple" embroidered on it in golden thread. Fanning himself gently, he looked at the concerned disciple and asked, "Are you alright?"
The disciple, still a bit shaken, bowed his head and stammered, "Y-Yes, Senior Brother. Thank you for your concern..."
Right after, Yang Wei looked at the departing Sun Yuying and muttered to himself, "Right now, I'm more concerned about her."
...
Some days later,
Now that Yang Wei held the title of Star Disciple, he took his status way too seriously, not in a responsible way, but more in how he presented himself. Sure, all the junior and even some senior disciples enjoyed having him around because he'd help them up their cultivation base with his "profound insights".
However, there were those who found his increasingly proud attitude annoying, most especially seniors from the Thundercloud Summit or Outer Sect Elders trying to get him to teach his junior brothers and sisters. Most of the time, they had to practically beg him, and it got pretty exhausting.
"Please, grant us some of your profound wisdom, Star Disciple Yang!"
That's what they were forced to say.
And following script, Yang Wei would reply with:
"Hmm, I suppose I could spare some of my time teaching young talents. I am the Inner Sect's Golden Child after all."
This is how the tale of Yang Wei, the Super Senior, started.
...
It was a rainy day, but that didn't deter Yang Wei from striding proudly along a tree-lined path, raindrops dripping from the leaves. A junior disciple dutifully held an umbrella over him as they walked through the wet sect grounds. Yang Wei, with chin up and hands clasped behind his back, seemed unfazed by the rain.
He casually asked the junior disciple, "So, where are we headed today?"
The junior disciple nervously chuckled and replied, "Ha-ha! I wouldn't know. Anywhere Senior Brother picks is fine."
"Naturally."
As they walked, other junior disciples scrambled in the rain to find shelter.
In the Sect, there's a general rule that only Elders and a handful of seniors like Elite Disciples and Core Disciples can use umbrellas. Yang Wei, being the special exception he imagines himself to be, falls under the Elder category. Catch any junior using an umbrella, and they're practically asking for trouble, to put it short—courting death.
Some of the junior disciples used their outer robes or silk sheets they kept in their storage pouches. Each made sure not to forget to greet Yang Wei as they hurried by.
"Good day, Senior Brother!"
"Senior Brother, Good day!!"
He would only respond to their greetings with a nod.
Then, he paused when he overheard two disciples discussing something, Yang Wei addressed them, "Good day, young disciples of our prestigious sect." He spoke with outright douchebaggery.
The disciples hesitated, then bowed their heads and greeted, "Good evening, Senior Brother Yang."
Yang Wei showed interest, asking, "Would you mind telling me what was so fascinating about this discussion of yours that you'd forget to pay your respects to me?"
One junior disciple nervously stuttered, "Um, well, it's not really worth bothering you with, Senior Brother."
The other one quickly nodded in agreement, "Ah, yes, we wouldn't want to waste your precious time."
The junior disciple holding the umbrella for Yang Wei shot them a disapproving look, fear evident in his eyes, as if they'd just committed a grave error by not sharing with the Sect's number one Super Senior.
Yang Wei, now wearing a cold expression, glared at the duo and commanded, "Speak."
The two disciples hit the muddy ground, not giving a damn about their already soaked clothes getting dirtier. Survival mode: activated, facing the wrath of the Super Senior.
One of the juniors shouted, "Sorry! We were just chatting about the latest Sect gossip!"
Yang Wei arched an eyebrow, deadpanning, "What exactly is the 'latest news'?"
The other junior piped up, "I-Its just some news about Senior Brother Yuan getting found after vanishing for months."
Yang Wei stayed silent.
Yuan Po? That middle-aged pervert is still kicking? If he's managed to stay alive this long, he must be chugging down a ton of preservation pills.
The junior continued, "But as usual, it's probably not worth your time, just dumb gossip from dumb people, Senior."
Yang Wei finally spoke, "I see."
He swiped the umbrella from the junior holding it for him and strolled away, leaving them stranded in the cold rain.
One of the disciples said, "Thank the Heavens!"
The other mumbled, "I... I think I wet myself."
