Chapter 49 - The Death of Bert
Chapter 49: The Death of Bert
“Mike, I’m dying soon. Ever since news spread that you slew an Overlord-tier Exotic Beast, these Earthlings have been going door-to-door, executing us Miracle natives.
“In an effort to protect his most precious equipment, master Bert jumped into a well with all of them.”
Fike listened with a shocked expression as the maid recounted.
He hadn’t expected so many things to have happened in the already initially shattered city of Ledda so soon after he had fought to the death to protect them from the Overlord-tier Exotic Beast.
“I stayed behind to stall them, protecting master Bert… Mike, Master also told me to find you in the end. There’s a spatial ring in his pocket, where he’s stored all his equipment.
“Quick, go, find… him.”
The maid still took her last breath in Fike’s arms.
He put down the maid’s body as he morphed into his alias’ appearance once again, preparing to leave to find the well.
“Hey, kid, what were you doing there acting so suspiciously just now?”
Turning around, Fike was met with an arrogant and domineering Earth thug, yelling at him and provoking him.
Fike knew that he could not fight him here. Although he would be able to kill all the rioters if he chose to do so, he did not want to see any more senseless violence.
Furthermore, he would be going against Earth people when humanity was already so close to being destroyed. If he fought because of a moment’s anger, he would be destined to walk a lonely path in the future.
“No, it’s nothing. I’m just checking if there’s any valuable treasures left in this pile of corpses.”
“Oh, is that so? Then what good things did you find?”
Fike stared at the unforgiving thug in front of him, before casually procuring a few low-level beast fangs from his backpack, and handed them over to him.
“At least you’re tactful, kid. Alright, you can leave now.”
He left the thug behind and searched the streets for the well the maid mentioned.
‘I need to find master Bert as soon as possible and leave this place.’
He once again made his way to the workshop, finding a dry well located not far from its backyard.
He hurried over anxiously.
“Perhaps master Bert is still alive!”
Fike leaned over the well’s mouth as he looked down, finding a human figure lying below.
He jumped in. As expected, it was master Bert.
He was already dead. Compared to the other corpses, his body was relatively clean, other than a fatal wound on his neck. Fike could tell that he had not died in great pain.
Bert’s right hand seemed to be tightly clutching something.
Opening it gently, Fike found a ring, which seemed to be the spatial ring that the maid had mentioned.
Fike flew himself out of the well, carrying along Bert’s body.
He cast a quick spell to dig a hole and buried the body.
It was a simple burial. Fike didn’t even set a tombstone for Bert, afraid that the thugs would find the grave and desecrate it in search of precious equipment.
Following a short and simple ceremony, Fike activated the spatial ring.
In it, other than Bert’s rare equipment and various materials, he also found a letter that had been left behind for him.
“Little friend Mike, when you see this letter, I should already be gone.
“When I found out that the Exotic Beasts were attacking the city, I rejected the offer from the Heavenly King’s Palace to take me away, as I didn’t want to give up everything that I’ve built in Ledda Lity over all these years.
“When I learned that you’d successfully killed the Overlord-tier Exotic Beast, I was ecstatic. Unfortunately, the other people of Earth started a riot in the wake of this calamity. I can understand their feelings.
“Mike, please believe me when I say this. Not everyone from Miracle is as bad as those in the royal palaces.
“I’ve put all of my proudest creations in this spatial ring, including the half-finished king-tier equipment.
“If you really find the Era Jade, please head north to the royal city of Romon. Go to the Yogmo Academy and look for a blacksmith named Tegpus. He is my senior.
“I believe that he will definitely be able to complete the forging of this king-tier equipment.
“Little friend Mike, I wish you good luck and all the best!”
As he finished reading his friend’s words, Fike’s heart swelled with emotions. He considered morality, weighing justice and evil.
Those Miracle workers from the palaces indeed deserved to die, but Miracle natives like Bert…
Bert had never been involved in the conspiracies between the Exotic Beasts and the palaces.
Weren’t these Earth people who were forcing them to their deaths killing for their own selfish desires?
Humans have always been creatures who bullied the weak. They were used to looking down on those weaker than themselves, only to turn around, bowing and groveling to those who were stronger than them.
When justice no longer abided by morals, what was the difference between justice and evil then?
Fike packed up his equipment as he prepared to leave Ledda City.
…
At the city gates, a group of Earth thugs was surrounding a young girl, harassing her vulgarly.
“Little girl, I’d advise you to be sensible. Let me check if you are really a spy sent from the Heavenly King’s Palace, hahahaha!”
“Yes, Yes, you don’t know what’s good for you, little girl. After all, we are the righteous resistance army, who have just pushed back the invasion of the Exotic Beasts. Naturally, we have to be more cautious when it comes to your kind who want to leave the city! Hahahaha!”
The young girl looked at the thugs before her without saying a word, tightening her grip on the sharp blade in her hands.
“Yo, little girl… Are you planning to resist? Can you beat us with that pathetic knife in your hands? Hahaha, be careful not to scratch your pretty little face.”
Fike watched the scene unfold not far away. Although the young girl’s back was facing him, he could definitely feel an intense killing intent exuding off her.
“If you guys don’t move aside, be careful that you don’t lose your eyes.”
The girl was calm.
“Hahaha, be careful with a skinny little girl like you? Don’t be ridicu-”
Before the brawny thug could even finish his sentence, a blade flashed as it sliced through the thug’s neck at lightning speed.
Blood gushed out of the wound like a geyser. The thug didn’t have time to say anything before he collapsed, his eyes wide open.
“You scrawny child, you dare to kill an Earthling? Brothers, kill her!”
The group of thugs swarmed toward the young girl.
However, she did not panic.
As the two sides met, the clash of their weapons caused sparks to fly across the walls of the city gate.
Their speed was extremely fast. From afar, Fike could only barely make out the figures of the thugs falling one after another.
In a short moment, most of them had fallen. As the others realized this, they defected, fleeing in all directions.
The girl seemed to have noticed Fike’s presence and muttered.
“Do you also want to fight me?”
